... :what: Im extracting with winrar so i can play and edit.
When you open the file, just leave it like that, you don't need to extract it. Anyways, Look what I got to work... [editline]09:36PM[/editline] I just tested my textures and... Rock looks like shit because it blends because of no shading. Sand looks like shit because it blends. Dirt looks pretty good at the moment. Tilled dirt, don't know because I don't know how to get a hoe.
For crafting recipes, I decided to open the game's files in the recipes folder and found that they are made from objects in grid-like positions. So open those files up in notepad and get some grid-paper. I'm pretty sure the dev didn't want us to do things like this (figuring out the recipes on your own and such) but it's a pretty easy way to get at 'em.

So it's Minecraft with increased modding potential?
You, just figured that out?
About two or less hours after the thread was posted yes.
what the fuck... does anybody else's computer make weird noises at the menu screen? And by this I mean the computer itself, my speakers are turned off. The tower is making a series of different high pitched tones, almost like a melody of some sort.
I noticed that it said in your blog about you being a Highschool student trying to make it in Indie game design, which is pretty awesome... I tried Brick and it works okay for where it's at. Some advice though.... :siren:Inspiration is one thing, Plagiarism is another.:siren: I understand that this game isn't too far along yet, but it just fits too well with Minecraft... The creator of Minecraft is already on the edge of starting his own development company, and if Brick doesn't contribute anything actually new to this kind of concept in a game, and Notch (Creator of Minecraft) is feeling evil, this entire thing could or would be shot down in an instant. Try mixing things up a bit. Do something that no one would even think of trying to do in a game of this concept. I'm not trying to start anything. Just throwing a mix of fact and opinion out there.
I know, I know, I know. Brick is only four months into development. The recent content update was the first in a long time. Everything else has been under the hood, adding event functionality, writing a script parser to make those events work, adding Perlin noise and a nicer interface, etc. I actually showed Notch Brick via Twitter, when I saw he became aware of Manic Digger and disliked how it was literally a copy, and he didn't have anything negative to say about it. [editline]11:02AM[/editline]
For crafting recipes, I decided to open the game's files in the recipes folder and found that they are made from objects in grid-like positions. The point of Brick is to be expanded, but you can't expand it if you don't know what's already there. [editline]11:05AM[/editline]
When you open the file, just leave it like that, you don't need to extract it. Anyways, Look what I got to work... Everything looked really flat beforehand. Try adding a bit of contrast.
Damn it, I thought this was the Brink thread first when I saw it. :v:
There's already a thread for this :v: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=999544
Reminds me of infiniminer more than minecraft :colbert:
i dont want my name slapped on this...
Keep up the good work, this could have some good potential.
Needs a few changes so it isn't just a minecraft clone. Maybe minecraft... in space. You could start out at your ship, which provides a place to stay, store a few things, and replinish your oxygen supply. Ore could be used to make basic tools, and buy supplies from passing spacecraft. (It also solves the issue of crafting complicated things like solar panels from moon rocks) Plus "Mooncraft" sounds badass
If you go through adding the features you're planning, this could be pretty awesome. As I said, I'd test it and tell you what I think. I would tell you what I think, if I could get the game to work properly: As soon as I start the game (by that I mean clicking new game and selecting the size), it freezes, and does completely nothing. I'm running under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I'll try a couple of compatibility modes later. [editline]04:17PM[/editline] Alright, it appears changing the resolution, and the quality got the game to work.

Every planet would just be a single randomly generated level or something like that.
This is the block progress: As you can see on the stone, it has a repeating texture thing, and I cant find a way to get rid of that without making it hard to see.

There might also be a 3rd party plugin somewhere.

The expandability, I think, makes it hard to snap into a single genre. I have no idea what's actually causing the crash, but since using your proper resolution fixes it, I don't think it's too much of a priority.
New update released.
This update was supposed to come out a lot more quickly than it did. Just (two?) more pieces of IRE. Instead, thanks to a certain artist’s enthusiasm and persistence, 75% of the game’s textures have been replaced, several bugs have been fixed, and even more have been discovered. In the next post, I will describe how to create an event for Zackeryp’s example, and will answer any other questions I receive by then. There’s another new content update, too. Suffice to say, it involves grass, cave grass, and stone, and the result is a consumable that heals 10 HP on use. Enjoy! This update will also break your saves, as I’ve began the switch to portal-based worlds. If you’re particularly attached to your world, e-mail me your save game at brickologist@gmail.com and I’ll convert it over for you. One final note, I’m hereby referring to this version as vX. Each successive version will be vX+1, vX+2, etc. http://www.mediafire.com/?ads7foxd5fx556e
Hope you enjoy. As always, I'll answer any questions.
let me get this straight it's a minecraft clone which is an infiniminer clone
It would be nice if you were to include a readme, with some basic crafting recipes. Also is there any way to make it start up in resolution other than 640xWhatever? Still I'm looking forward to seeing how this will develop.
Crashes when I save, also in XP. Am I missing something? How do I get through stone without adding it to my inventory? Also, perhaps I'm retarded, but I can't seem to make jackshit. What combos are there that are easy to make?
This is the block progress: As you can see on the stone, it has a repeating texture thing, and I cant find a way to get rid of that without making it hard to see.
You know one thing you can do to set apart from MC is to not have eye bleeding graphics, bump those texture resolutions to like 128^2 or something.
You know one thing you can do to set apart from MC is to not have eye bleeding graphics, bump those texture resolutions to like 128^2 or something.
The stone and dirt in that picture was made by Jiggmin, not me. On low quality, the game looks like this: On high quality (64x64 textures.) the game looks like: In the original version, there was very low, low, medium, (Those three are now low, medium, and high.) high, (128x128) and very high. (256x256) But those textures ended up bumping the size of the game to about 20 Megabytes, were in distinguishable unless you were really close, and didn't really make sense to use once I switched to the 'stacked' method of making the textures. [editline]11:58AM[/editline]
It would be nice if you were to include a readme, with some basic crafting recipes. Otherwise, just make that folder (In Roaming if you're on 7, and probably Vista.) and make Settings.txt, and add the following line: 'Resolution=1280x1024:32' Change 1280x1024 to your resolution. Leave 32 at what it is, unless you want to run Brick in 16 or 8 bit color mode for some odd reason. As for a readme, that's a fantastic idea that I really should have done a while ago. In the beginning, the idea was that players would just discover recipes on their own, but that's probably not a good policy to maintain since there are so few existing combinations for all the possible ones. So, yeah, I'll do that. [editline]12:05PM[/editline]
Crashes when I save, also in XP. Am I missing something? How do I get through stone without adding it to my inventory? Destroying a block instantly adds it to your inventory, yes. If you wanted to change that, the next blog post is going to show how to make a tool that has a chance of giving you Iron Ore instead of stone when you use it, so keep an eye out for that, and you should be able to modify it. As for crafting, the, I guess, most basic crafting recipe is the ore of the same type, side by side, which makes a metal block of that color. Something that requires even less resources is wood on its own, which will give you a wooden pole. You would get more if you, say, carved it with a knife. To make a knife blade, just put two iron blocks side by side, and attach it to a wooden pole.
Awesome, thanks. This game, I don't know what it is, but it's really genuinely fun. [editline]07:19PM[/editline] Huh. On XP it was working OK, other than the saving thing. On Vista I click start game with the default settings and nothing happens. When I click escape, I go to the menu like normal. If I click "I" the inventory opens, but you can only see the corner, like the resolution os messed up or something. [editline]07:19PM[/editline] Basically I can't play it.
It is painfully obvious that the dev does not use dual monitors. It royally fucks them up.

Why are people so set on copying Minecraft? Notch has his own company and pretty big connections, do you really think you can compete with that? Just because you put in your thread "lulz i know its like minecraft but its different" doesn't make it different. If you really want to make something decent, think of something that hasn't been done before because starting something like this in direct competition with Notch is just suicide to be honest.
