Why is video game music better then most other music today?

Because you aren't looking hard enough for good artists. You probably predominantly play video games, so that's where most of your music exposure comes from. Coupled with the nostalgia you feel while hearing songs in games, because of the emotions the games would illicit within you while hearing them, you will obviously feel more of a connection to well produced video game music.
Now as for it being better than most other music today? "Better" is a term used to state a matter of preference, not everyone likes the same things. You'd probably hate half of the music I listen to and call it noise, while I think it's brilliantly put together, experimenting with uncommon time signatures and what not.
Really, video game music isn't any better than than other music today, you just happen to like it more.
A great soundtrack is essential for a good game. The games I love have mostly a great soundtrack.
It enhances the atmosphere or the gameplay. Especially in Left 4 Dead or Splinter Cell. Both have a great soundtrack.
I listen to remixes of video game music.
Like this for example:

I would say that I listen to such music more often than anything else, but that's because I'm into music without lyrics. That's common among video game music remixes and video game music in general.

Nostalgic and beautiful. That's all that can be said.
I think that the popular music of these days is crap. I don't like it at all. There are a few alright ones though. maybe. Video game music is more suited for the situations or style of game. And games are better than the Main music flow.
Holy shit are you fucking kidding?
No way in hell are you right, music I've listened to in the last 2 years have blown my mind, something video games could never do.
That said, the Halo 3 soundtrack is incredible
Threads like this are crap in my opinion, people have different tastes. I like VG music multiple dozen times more than anything else, but woah.
Yeah all music is opinion, nothing more in the end I guess

I disagree with OP though, to the max
StarCraft 2 had some really epic music, better than some stuff I listen to outside of games.
It isn't. In my opinion, at least.
Mass Effect and Half-life 2 have the best soundtracks ever. Also the Halo games have a nice music in them, especially Halo CE.
A few examples:

And ofcourse the Half-life 2 music that was posted on page 1.
Because videogame music is more orchestral most of the time, and is more like the old classic music than today's metal/rock/whatever. And yeah, I prefer video game soundtracks too, they just fit my tastes a lot more.
no one?

I wholeheartedly disagree with OP. There is some GREAT music being made nowadays.
It's just that the medias spam stupid pop music and commercialized bullshit.
One of them contains about as much music as Metal Gear Solid contains gameplay.
Don't tell me you're one of those people who's stingy about what's "real music". Justin Bieber is music, it has rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, all of those things. The fact that you despise it, along with a lot of this forum it seems, makes no difference.
Im not really keen on lyrics, i can make some exeptions but most of the time. Its just music. A few games spring to mind for having some decent music, Red Alert, Dynasty Warriors, Zelda, Fallout 3, Starcraft 2 i quite fancyed. Never had the chance to acually listen to the ost though. No more heroes had some pretty good music too. Particulary Alice Twlights theme.
Edit: Of course, i cannot forget Ragnarok Online's OST. That pretty much sums up my younger days playing on Age of Chaos RO. To me, listening to the Prontera theme is extreme nostalgia.

Video game music is great stuff, don't get me wrong. (It makes up my entire 20GB Zune collection), but you gotta admit there's still some musicians out there with class.
