Actually I'm pretty sure the reason he can do that is because it's his game, not because it's a beta.
It's not HIS game. If I had a games store, I could open it whenever I wanted, because it's MY store, but if it looked like a mess, I wouldn't get many customers.
Stop whining guys
It's not HIS game. If I had a games store, I could open it whenever I wanted, because it's MY store, but if it looked like a mess, I wouldn't get many customers.
I honestly don't get how that analogy was supposed to convince me that it isn't his game.
People will never be content with any concession notch makes. Half surprised he doesn't just drop support and announce that it's 'done' with all these people bitching that it takes more then 24 hours to fix a long list of bugs.
Suggesting that there is not a content freeze, but if anything a content slow-down. Which we have, no doubt, seen. IT'AS AU BETA!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feature_complete minecraft beta was not feature complete. there is still no modding api, among other planned features. therefore, not feature complete and not beta. gg
You said it yourself, it worked well up until this point. What makes you think Notch won't fix it? According to you, there's been alot more updates that didn't break the game than actually did. Just wait a few more days before you all continue to bitch about this. Surely you can go a few days without Minecraft?
Exactly. I expect some sort of quality from notch. I don't remember an update that broke so much stuff. For example, if a skilled painter always painted portraits with intricate detail, that's what you'd expect of him, right? Now, imagine the same painter painting a stick figure, and rather than trying to improve the stick figure, he paints the same stick figure in a different position on the canvas.
please stop making analogies
Why? He's just gonna complain, might as well try to raise my post count.
which betas do not have.
Generally.
it's pretty fucking clear that the regular definition of beta doesn't apply to minecraft, so stop trying to apply the parts of it that are convenient.
it's pretty fucking clear that the regular definition of beta doesn't apply to minecraft, so stop trying to apply the parts of it that are convenient.
Minecraft's Beta isn't a usual beta. It's still a beta, though.
I honestly don't get how that analogy was supposed to convince me that it isn't his game.
It doesn't matter if it's his game, he made it for his customers, he can't just do something because it's his game. But I'm overexaggerating, all I want to say is that maybe he should test some more before releasing a big update, either with nightly builds or by using some private testers.
It doesn't matter if it's his game, he made it for his customers, he can't just do something because it's his game.
I completely disagree. It's his software, not yours. You're not developing it, he is. Somewhat.
But I'm overexaggerating, all I want to say is that maybe he should test some more before releasing a big update, either with nightly builds or by using some private testers.
I agree. He needs to use some of that money to hire testers, or some more coders. Something more useful than an office building.
so let me get this straight because I play cortex command (an unfinished game like minecraft) does that mean I'm helping test it? I mean, I don't see any "BETA" labels in cortex command anywhere but I see a "BETA" label in minecraft they're both unfinished games
To be completely honest, I've never seen anything called a beta that had 2,400,000 that paid for the game. Usually, I see betas for free, or you'd have to sign up for it. Minecraft's true equivalent of a beta would be Classic. In classic, you get a basic feel for what Minecraft is AND you don't have to pay.
Minecraft's Beta isn't a usual beta. It's still a beta, though.
So you can make up what beta means so you are right?

I guess you could try to think of it in levels. [editline]27th May 2011[/editline]
So you can make up what beta means so you are right?
Show me where I made up a definition for beta.
I don't really know much about Cortex Command, so I can't really comment on it with any confidence.
the point is your reasoning is that any game that is unfinished counts as a "beta" and thus playing it means you're helping test it
With the beta, you do have to pay to use it, and you get a better feel for it. I guess you could try to think of it in levels.
the point is your reasoning is that any game that is unfinished counts as a "beta" and thus playing it means you're helping test it
In a way, yes. Do you disagree? Even by playing a released game you could technically say you're testing it.
Here
That isn't making up a definition for a beta. That's saying that something technically adheres to the definition of beta.
I thought 1.6 might get me back into minecraft but everything in it looks like it was implemented in the laziest possible way. Theres new features but they don't have the depth and actual substance that actually would make them useful gameplay elements. Theres SO much more that could have been done with hatches, like multiple orientations, ability to have water pass through it (Which is NOT impossible) and it doesn't even have its own texture (A windowed box looks kinda silly) Its annoying because its difficult to go back to gameplay elements and make changes in a gameplay mechanic you have already created. This is especially true if your original implementation was poor and you are trying to improve it. Right now most of the stuff notch has added to the game needs a major rethink to be optimum and actually add real mechanics to the game, almost everything I can think of that has been added has been lazy. Powered minecarts are lazy, notch picked the first idea he could think of (using coal on a minecart) and went with it. The result? Powered minecarts added almost no functionality to the game and were quickly forgotten about. Biomes are lazy, they don't really have anything unique about them to be that interesting. Sure they are pretty but they just add aesthetic variety. If biomes were made with some actual substance then biome specific mobs and properly thought out resources in each biome would have made a much more interesting change to the game. The nether is lazy. Its just a big cave with red bricks everywhere, its boring as shit. The floating islands dimension is going to be boring to, you'll go to it and nothing interesting will have changed except that now the terrain is floating, big deal. Theres many more examples of good ideas turning out to be crap because of laziness and poor planning, it pisses me off about the huge potential minecraft has but everytime a good idea comes around theres so many possibilities for it but the most basic and dull implementation is what always makes it into the game. Its pathetic.

itt: heated banter
http://twitter.com/#!/Dragonshadow/status/74169681405157376 Notch just gave up on that idea, didn't he?
Oh wow, people everywhere are shouting that he broke the game, notch: "Just played Terraria the whole day, oh, did someone say the game is broken? I didn't hear it."
I was reading my twitter stream and burst out laughing when I seen this. Seriously how the fuck do you make a game that thousands of people play and go 24 hours after a huge update without realising the game is completely fucked. I mean it really does go to show how little he cares about his game now.

You've done great work so far! Get to the bugs on Monday and enjoy the weekend :)" "Why come in Saturday? Go have a fun weekend. I don't mind if my beta has some bugs until early next week." "for doing this you are our hero. We love your game and your ideas. We = 2.3 million people" Notch is like some kind of religious deity. It is really strange :S

At least this update made 3D a lot better, The colours are much improved now.
