Mass Effect 1, and then Mass Effect 2 IN THAT ORDER
Favorite game series of all time.
I support this.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.
Will I be able to get used to the first Mass Effect's gameplay after playing Mass Effect 2? I heard it was really annoying.
Risen, for some reason or another it didnt get a very large reception (probably because it was banned from release in some areas) Has quite a good story, two faction paths to choose from very early, changing the course of the entire game basically.
Don't fucking play Mass Effect 2 before 1.
Dragon Quest V.
Golden Sun & Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
Some of the best RPGs ever. The new one for the DS is gonna be awesome.
Nehrim: At Fate's Edge is a good mod of oblivion if you can get past the german voiceacting.
The Mother Series.
Someone mentioned Earthbound, but play them all. Earthbound Zero, Earthbound, Mother 3 (Mother 1, 2, and 3)
Final Fantasy X.
PLANESCAPE: ToRMENT
Final fantasy (insert number)
You must be shitting me.
I've already played Mass Effect, forgot to add it to the list.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines
Most Final Fantasy games. My personal favourite is FF Tactics on the PSX.
Arcania Gothic 4 comes out today, earlier in some places, later in others.. Steam doesn't have a release date but I'm pretty sure it's the 15th or 19th
Knights of the Old Republic is bad-ass no matter how you slice it. Also, you've played Fallout 3, so play the other games.(but not BOS. That thang came outta a drippy hole)
If you have a Ps2 still Final Fantasy x has a really good story. I'm still playing just because it's that good.

Arcanum has an insanely compelling story. Such an underated game in just about every department.
Get yourself the latest version of the unofficial patch & you're sorted.
I honestly loved the story and the environment in Fallout 3...there was a time when I was on top of one of the satellite dishes at sunset, and just thought to myself how awful and scary it is, and realized I probably wouldn't last more than a few days after a similar event before I just offed myself out of sheer depression...
Planescape.
Fallout 2.
System Shock 2. It's a bitch to get running on newer systems, and even when you get it running it sometimes doesn't play the opening and ending cutscenes, but it's still pretty damn scary and immersive.
It's basically Bioshock with a scarier atmosphere, deeper RPG elements and a blockier yet somewhat scarier aesthetic.
Either that or you can go with the original System Shock on DOS. It's a little harder to get used to control-wise, but otherwise it's just as fun and well made as the sequel.
Earthbound: a bit basic, but fun if your in the right mood. Very long so don't expect to complete it in one sitting. don't defeat the final boss late at night or you'll have dreams filled with aborted fetuses.
Mother 3: sequel to above, a bit darker with some of the subjects it deals with, but really good story. Some of the encountered monsters and bosses are hilarious.
Final Fantasy 6: Last good final fantasy game and the best one (in my opinion). Brilliant visuals for a SNES game, great storyline with lots of character development, no moody teenagers / Japanese fashion / furries / impossible hairstyles that ruin the later games, and it includes an antagonist that actually succeeds in destroying the world. all wraped up in a steampunk 18th-19th century setting.
Chrono Trigger: probably the only game I've played that does a good job of time travel. Almost everything you do in one time will effect something later on. the battle system is unique from what I know, it has great visuals. a good amount of side quests. and a good all round adventureish story.
just a list off the top of my head. I normally avoid modern RPG games, they just don't really interest me for some reason.
