pc building section, do NOT ask here

Uh, but I'm already doing that. Perhaps for different reasons though.

I thought it was just servers
It takes 1000w to power my GTX 470. A 1200w powering 4x480s? No, won't work. They'll need more.

I can't decide whether to laugh at you or despair at how stupid people can be when it comes to computers
There are standard personal computer motherboards with 2 or more cpu slots
Uh, no, unless that was a question.
And the electricity bills of this :byodood:
I was more amazed at the sheer amount of money spent on this. It'll cost more money for a month's electricity than this is worth.

A server is a computer.

If you don't have the monitor, keyboard, mouse, case, other accessories and operating system, a decent AMD-based PC can cost $800.

and that won't exactly be ripping through games
It takes them six weeks to build a computer?
That's how long it takes for the parts to be shipped to them I think.

Better than my 2.4 single core and 9400 GT. However, I can't see why anyone would want ride the middle lane with PC spending, seems a bit of a waste to me.

I'd hardly consider the SR2 Classy a regular board.
I'd hardly consider the SR2 Classy a regular board.
too bad it's not defined by what you consider a board is then
The only gaming peripherals I see as plausible are mice, everything else is bullshit labelled on crap. My Cherry stream xt performs the same or better than that steelseries keyboard and costs 10x less. Same for my HD555s combined with a £2 desktop mic from the supermarket.
I am joining the contest.
Greatest? The Astros are sub-par compared to non-gaming headsets like the Sennheiser HD555's or the Audio Technica AD700s.
This is clearly just a "budgeted" thing.
Edit: By that, I mean some guys who vaguely know stuff about computers were given a lot of money, and just grabbed some shit that looked cool.
they are idiots who know jack shit about actual PC building. Everyone who think they are "s0 Pr0ZZzzz" on XBox Live (where these goons most likely originated), thinks flashy shit like Astro headsets are the plastic equivalent of gold. They don't know anything about audio quality and think price tag means everything.
You'd be better off buying this even though I can't stand Ati cards.

You wouldn't throw the computer away if you won though.
the goal was to build the most expensive computer. After it's just a way of selling things, most Gamespot readers are console players and think that price means quality.
Deal with it.

Of fucking course I wouldn't. But I would do the smart thing and salvage parts I actually want, then sell the rest. Seeing as I have a decent PC now.
So any updated videos?
The competition is now up: http://uk.gamespot.com/promos/2010/greatest-gaming-rig/

Only for UK residents?
[editline]07:11PM[/editline]
I mean, it's no hurt to try it
Quite a simple contest here, just go to overclockers.co.uk and try and find the parts. No doubt that would be the closest to the pricing they had.
[editline]08:02PM[/editline]
Fuck it, just type "OVER 9000000 XDXDXD", you'll probably win.
I used google shopping to get rough prices for each part, added a sob story to why i should win. Nvidia 5 series. the end.
Two new parts are up:

I find it amusing that even though the competition states that it isn't trying to save money in ANY way at all, and that the whole idea is to see how much stuff they can cram into a single PC if money was no object, people are going on about how you could build a computer that could run games maxed for much less. That's not the point. They are building a total beast of a machine that is clearly overkill, and they don't really care about it being overkill. Deal with it, and enjoy it for what it is.
