That's a bit of an overstatement. The 90s, however important they were for gaming, ended a long time ago and they've kind of gone in a different direction than most of the industry since then. What other major developer still makes 3D platformers? Yes there's Sega, but they haven't been very successful. Their other franchises are also pretty much the only of their kind, even their RPGs tend to stray from the usual JRPG formula.
Now of course you can argue that the Wii ended up influencing both Sony and Microsoft to invest in motion control technology, but do you really think they plan on taking it to the extent Nintendo did? It really didn't have a major, long term impact on even it's own games, the role of Motion Control in Nintendo's games is much less significant than it was several years ago.
Nobody's following Nintendo because Nintendo isn't trying to be better than anybody. They're just doing what they're good at doing and making money doing it.

This poll is fucked up. Notch is going to win because of his blog post and army of casuals. Valve could win if they cared about it. How the fuck does one game that hasn't come out triumph valve. I bought minecraft in Alpha and played it like 2 times. Team Fortress 2, CSS, and L4D's have almost always been more appealing

It is true they do use others ideas, but the creator gets a job. Valve finds awesome mods and makes them into games. Half-life wasn't ripped from anything else to my knowledge.

Let's not forget Nintendo, Valve, Team Meat, Blizzard, Epic, Konami, TellTale, Dice, Bioware, Popcap, Lucas Arts, and every other tournament competitor that actually released a game.

Are you implying 99% of the gaming industry doesn't rip off aspects of other games? Pretty much every FPS nowadays is CoD with something stupid sprinkled on to it, every MMORPG is trying to be WoW, every sandbox is trying to be GTA, need I to continue?
Minecraft Fanboys annoy me. At school, like 1/4 of the school plays minecraft. I know like three people with servers. Their always talking about it and reading minecraft forum. I look at my tf2 bp and they all call it gaming and get teacher tell me not to. Then they go back to reading miencraft forum. They don't like tf2 and say its boring. How can you get bored in tf2 there are so many different games in it. Dueling, trading, Backstabbing, Sniper wars, and the actual objective.
It's so strange how people insist on continuing to hold stupid internet popularity contests when every single one of them ends the same way:
Someone in a moderately large community finds out that the contest includes something everyone there is a rabid fan of and tells said community, and then EVERYONE there spams the fuck out of it resulting in a winner who didn't deserve it.
Not even contests held by some of the biggest sites on the internet can keep this from happening.
I wish Id Software was there, even though they havent done anything lately except a few reveals.
Escapist blows anyway; their only redeeming factor is Zero Punctuation.
I voted Mojang and Valve every round. Gotta go with Valve here though. I wouldn't be into gaming if it weren't for them.
