This thread is full of people who are too blind to take off their nostaglia goggles to realize that this is Sega actually ATTEMPTING to redeem Sonic instead of giving us any sword/werehog bullshit.
And this is their first REAL attempt in a long time. Give them time and I'm sure they will feel like their 90's selves again.
There's all these complaints about the speed of the game, but I don't really care about that. If you think sonic was just about going fast then you're as bad at game design as the current sega team. No wonder no one can make a sonic game as good as 3. Now what I do care about is that this feels like a montage, not a sequel. The bosses are completely recycled from older games, the stages are unoriginal, and anyone who played the older sonic games should feel ripped off that they're reselling us this stuff.
I wonder why they made the gameplay 2D again. I rather liked the Sonic Adventure games.

I don't even have nostalgia goggles.
I'm complaining because the game is not enjoyable in the slightest for me. It's too damn short(episodes or not), and the game feels like not a Sonic game at all; more like some retarded ripoff.

ive been flamed 2 times before: one for saying that I didn't like sonic 1, and the other because I said sonic was never about going 10000000 MPH in a straight line
I bought the game and am enjoying it thus far. It's probably one of the most annoyingly difficult games I've ever played, but it's just tempting enough to make you want to keep playing.
That's the only real problem I have with this game, that and the fact that Sonic looks like he was drawn in a vector graphics editor.
Jesus, are you Sonic fans never satisfied?
"omg they should just make a 2D sonic! these 3D ones suck dick nipples!"
"Wish granted!"
"omg it not 100% like the first ones! you lose good day sir!"
As an obvious former member of the fanbase, I can confirm this. It's impossible to please retrofags, unfortunately - they have their damn rose tinted glasses glued to their face. Sure, I'm not too impressed with what Sega's been doing lately but I'm not complaining when they actually try to please older fans.
I'll bet you $50 that if Sega made a brand-new Sonic game with the same graphics/mechanics as the classics people would still complain.

Rating late. The cycle doesn't technically apply to Sonic 4 since it's received favourable reviews so far. Also, just going to throw this out there for later:
theres even some guy who made the top 10 hottest female sonic characters.
Seen it. People like these make me ashamed to still have the word "Sonic" in my name :smith:
am I the only one who fucking loved the sonic adventure series
Hell no
They should make a game focused on Tails. He is a way better character in my opinion.
Hell yes
The fact is, most people under 20 never played Sonic 1, but simply remember it from "second hand information". [...] I know kids that are fourteen that complain about how lame Sonic is today and how the originals they "played as a kid" were so awesome. How would they know. The original came out 6 years before they were born. They were born in 96, and Playstation was just being released around that time. When they were old enough to even hold a controller, the Xbox and PS2 were current.
/rant
I'm 14. I own two working Genesis consoles. I own every Sonic game made for it.
In '96, the Genesis was still around regardless of the release of the PS, and still came with a Sonic game.
"When they were old enough to even hold a controller, the Xbox and PS2 were current." what the fuck are you on about? I'm sure you knew how to hold a controller before you were 5.
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Dx were likes 2 of my favorite games. Then Sonic Heroooooooos was shit.
I hope you mean Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure. DX and Battle were terrible ports.
Sonic Heroes was pretty damn awesome.
TIME TO CRACK THAT EGGMAN WIDE OPEN
YEAH, LET'S PARTY
Wish they made a port of Sonic Adventure 2 (and maybe 1?) for PS3 and 360. With improved graphics and stuff.
That`s really all I want.
They're already porting SA1 to the PS3 and 360 - mind you, it's more like the shitty DX version and less like the Dreamcast one.
How could a gameplay element that massively slows the game down possibly be a good idea in a title that is all about speed?
I dare you to play Sonic 1-K and then say that again with a straight face.
Has anyone else noticed how pressing down to go into a spin actually... slows you down? In the original games it sped you up.
That just totally fucks with my head.
No, this has not changed from the original games. If you weren't going down a slope while pressing down in the original games you would still slow down.
Hehehe, OP is claiming that Sonic 4 is shit and that anybody who disagrees is flat out wrong, right? Here's the post he got banned for:
:irony:
One thing that baffles me is this whole speed thing. I've seen the 3D sonic games, even played one, and they put a hell of a lot more emphasis on speed that any of the 2D games I've seen, and the 3D games are the ones everyone hates. It's easy to see why, since the immense focus on making Sonic run as fast as possible does more harm than good. Even the slightest change in direction could send you flying off path (and their solution to that was to just make large sections of the stage have a pre-made path that you'd snap on to at high speeds.) It also is the very reason why the homing attack exists, since manually jumping on enemies while moving at insanely high speeds would just be annoying.
i haven't played the game yet but i'm gonna give it a shot cause i have a homebrew wii but if they wanted to go for the classic feel why not do it using the old sonic 3 graphic style and gameplay? it would be like megaman 9 and 10 and new super mario bros.

I want this.
My friend was on the border about getting it.
I warned him.
First thing I hear about it, the next day? "Sonic 4 is shit."
What do you think made more furries? Starfox or Sonic?
Sonic, Princess Sally is the face that launched a thousand furries.
This is what the game should have been like:
am I the only one who fucking loved the sonic adventure series
Those games were made really well, also Sonic 4 is a great game.
From what i've seen, Dimps recycled the Sonic Rush engine for the physics as most already know. While the Rush engine/physics were good for what they were, a classic-esque game they do not make. But someone will probably chew me out for dragging on the physics arguement, so onto the next one:
What the fuck with the rehashing. Maybe it's a given for similar first acts, but christfuck. Even the final boss is nothing more than a toned-down copy of what almost every Sonic fan should recognize. This will probably be toned down in following Episodes (a theory is that the first episode incites nostalgia before they really work on new stuff in later ones), but I won't put $15 on that bet yet. The music is also painful - they simply took Sonic 2 drums and put a generic synth that is eargrating.
Also; why were Sonic Adventure DX and Adventure 2 Battle terrible ports? They had higher polygon counts, expanded content, and faster overall framerates.
Edit: Son of a bitch, the level clear song for the final level is the Sonic 3 act clear song, complete with what seem to be the same drums. Sonic 3-style music for Episode 2, anyone?
a title that is all about speed?
Sir, I have it in my mind to strike you.
The game It's ok
but there are some things that sega can improve (the speed, the physics, the difficulty)
Also the levels are like the old sonic games, only that fucking easy
I just played it, holy fuck, the sprites and setting looks like they were made in a crappy flash game. Homing attack made the game pretty easy too.
