But the fact that SO MANY people enjoy it, does. I know it's a little hard for you to understand it, but when the majority of the people like something, that thing becomes good.
Like i mentioned before, marketing goes along way. MW2 was the first time I've heard any company spend more money on marketing the game than the actual budget used to develop the game (shows how much belief they have in their product lol). Also that high number of sales is on consoles mostly - teenagers who get the game due to peer pressure. Sales between MW2 and Blackops actually decreased on PC, which is also evident by higher peak number of players on MW2 compared to Blackops.

Stop crapping out facts and look at average game time per week. Enough people are still playing both those games a lot, therefore they must like it.

Ofcourse marketing has a great impact.
Look, Call of Duty is so popular because it's easy to get into and easy to enjoy, unlike hardcore games such as ArmA, IL-2 Sturmowik and such. What do you define as a good game? Realistic, complicated, good graphics, good combat system... Or what? ArmA 2 is a good game because it's good at what it's supposed to be good at, it's supposed to be an infantry enviroment combat stimulator and it does that good. Call of Duty is good because it's good at what it's supposed to be good at; it's supposed to be, simply, entertaining. If you don't like that then, fine.

look at peak times per day. Average doesn't give a definitive idea. Compare MW2 and Blackops separatly, every day over a period of a week, month oe whatever. There are more peak players on MW2 (2 year old game) than Blackops (recent release). This should give an incite to what MW3 willbe like - even fewer.
But honestly I don't think marketing has that much of an impact on the sales, I think it's the gamers themselves. If a game is good and entertaining they'll tell their friends about it. CoD is easy to like, so ofcourse people are gonna tell their friends to get it.

Blackops was made by a developer known for making crappier games than IW, and I know I myself find mw2 to be far more fun than black ops, so yeah, I can see why mw2 has more players on peek times.

Its the same game ever year. You buy one you have them all. Only reason to buy new releases is to fit in with friends.

yet Blackops sold more copies than MW2... Clearly the dumb consolers.

I'm going to get mw3 just because I want to play the story, how crappy it may be, I want to finish the story. I don't even play mw2 with my irl friends so what the fuck you on about.

Yeah they are very much alike, but that's the whole point of it. It's Call of Duty, what else could they introduce than the normal WSAD-movement (jump, sprint, crouch prone...), 2 weapon slots, grenade+special grenade, equipment and so on. They are changing eras and settings and changing weapons and content, keeping the same gameplay and mechanism. There is nothing wrong with that.

99% of ppl who buy cod get it for MP. It is its main feature.
But if you're going the campaign mode route, CoD has the most clichéd storyline, same typical American soldier saving the world. Like I've never been told that story before.

I sure hope they bring back normal killstreaks in MW3, I hate the black ops crap.
It's a game series for gods sake. All of the Half-Life games are very much the same, aswell as all of the Silent Hill games, Splinter Cell, Starcraft, Diablo, Crysis, Hitman and so on.

I hated the killstreaks in MW3, 80% of my deaths were because of killstreaks, I prefered it in CoD4 or no kill streaks at all really.

Maybe update the gfx engine they've been using for 7 years - no... too lazy. Add bigger maps? Add vehicles in MP? These are just random thing I'm coming out with on the spot that would make a difference between each cod game.

But then it's not CoD anymore is it? CoD is small maps, on foot.

There were Veichles in Call of Duty 1 and 3 and World at War, and to be honest it was not that great at all. And bigger maps wouldn't make much of an improvement, everyone would just be running around not knowing where the enemy is. And I couldn't care for the engine at all.

Thats another thing - killstreaks require no skill. Ruins the game as an fps. Yet with this 'easy to pick up game' attitude it makes the game unskillfull to play and dumbed down. More reason to support poorly thoughout game.

Yeah cause it takes skills to go around shooting other players. You're just being one of those "1337" kids when you're saying that playing CoD doesn't take any skills. Who the hell cares if you need 'skills' to play a game. Since you don't have to be really good at the game to still enjoy it makes it even better. I'm not against the killstreaks, you can play without them if you wish to, no one is stopping you.

It will still differentiate new release cods compared to the last cod. At least a graphics overhaul. And i'm sure there are other features game devs can think of to make it feel different from the last. Cuz as it stands now most people are buying the game to be up to date with their friends..

Not when half the kills come from killstreak, as you pointed out. Getting 5 kills with gun takes skill, getting another 4 kills from harrier doesn't. Hence a lot of it requires barely any skill.

Yeah, I'm not looking for difference nor originality or anything revolutionary when I'm buying a Call of Duty game and I don't think anyone else is. I'm looking for a CoD game that's up to date, and there really isn't anything wrong with that. If I don't think I'll enjoy the game I don't get it at all, and just ignore it.
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
Call of Duty isn't a bad game series.
i may get it but if it has a pay to play no way. i mainly get it because recently with there split screen stuff it has been fun playing with my bro or anybody on split.

Up to date with friends i said not actual game. I could buy MW2 and be up to date with all COD games in theory. Thats whats sad - usually game devs will release what COD gives every year, in DLC's. The fact they charge $60 fior same thing is like Buying a house, and paying full price for it the following year just because you bought a new fridge... logic?
Well, if you think of it that way, then just get one Call of Duty game. No one is forcing you to buy any of the other Call of Duty games.
I hope people pay for the subscription and the game sucks dick.

Its not that i think of it that way... it IS that way since you failed in mentioning something diferent added to new releases. It's only a matter of time before ppl realise. That is why games come out with new releases, to offer something diferent for the gamer. At least even DICE updated their engine to offer something new.
The thing is, all games are made for money, only sometimes the developers put a lot of effort into entertaining the consumer and making it better because they want to know they have made a highly loved game.

Call of Duty 1, World War 2. Call of Duty 2, World War 2, Much prettier, changed the game into more of the mordern style we know it today with the smaller maps and simple combat. Call of Duty 3, can't really say much about it, since it only came out on the consoles, brought veichles to the multiplayer and had splitscreen. Call of Duty 4: Mordern Warfare, kept the same old Call of Duty 2 gameplay pretty much but had better graphics, brought it to a mordern 00's era, with new weapons, it added weapon customization, class customization, perks, killstreaks and a whole bunch of different content. Call of Duty: World at War was basically Call of Duty 4 but in a World War 2 setting, added flamethrowers and brought back veichles to the online. Mordern Warfare 2, went back to a mordern warfare setting, added many more weapons, much more customization, many more killstreaks. Black Ops added changed it into a cold war 60's/70's era and introduced a bunch of new content aswell. What else do you want?

This isn't true. Most games are made because the makers want to create and share something, same with movies aswell as music. Then ofcourse there are always games that will be made just for the money, especially sequals.
The flaw of Crysis is that it prides itself on having an extremely pretty landscape and junk at the cost of having a majority of players not being able to play it at a steady framerate and questionable gameplay. Sure it looks nice, but the gameplay is subpar. Crysis 2 just made things shinier.
anyone who thinks crysis 1 had subpar gameplay just didnt play it correctly. it was very open and you could do anything, you could punch down friggin houses. there were always many many routes to a certain objective too.
only the alien part failed, if you think crysis 1 was generic your a madman/bandwagoner
Call of Duty 1, World War 2. Call of Duty 2, World War 2, etc..
"Differentiate between recent releases". So pretty much from COD 4 onwards.
Call of Duty 4: Mordern Warfare, kept the same old Call of Duty 2 gameplay pretty much but had better graphics, brought it to a mordern 00's era, with new weapons, it added weapon customization, class customization, perks, killstreaks and a whole bunch of different content. Won't argue there, since COD4 was the last game to be of high quality and not just copy and paste. I still do enjoy COD 4 from time to time.
Mordern Warfare 2, went back to a mordern warfare setting, added many more weapons, much more customization, many more killstreaks.
Here's where things start to go wrong. How hard is it to replace the code for harrier Killstreak with Attack helicopter Killstreak.... I could probably do it myself. No wonder they didn't add PC mods, because they want to make slight mods and charge for it themselves. The new Black Ops mods that has come out recently doesn't offer anything new... just skin editors and what not.
So pretty much copy and paste game.
Black Ops added changed it into a cold war 60's/70's era and introduced a bunch of new content aswell.
content like what? Let me guess! Killstreaks! Customisations! Maps! Same as in MW2... and MW1...Why would i ever need to pay $15 for DLC ever again?.. i can just pay $60 for it instead!....
