Its only that way if you pay the entry fee $12.99, if your paying the normal $15/month you get 8 characters per server a max of 40 total. Honestly the billing page isn't well explained and I'm sure it'll be expanded on soon or you'll know soon enough once you are able to setup billing for FFXIV ARR.
Did a quick search around the beta forums and it seems that you can only be in one free company per character.
I have no problem with this, because I really want to start a FP free company, but there are probably others on here that would rather join a FC with their friends or something.

Apparently people on reddit found out that there was a date of 17th on the Japanese site somewhere but it has now been taken down. A lot of people have been speculating that date more than anything but that's about it. The live letter on the 8th will most likely reveal the open beta and early access dates.

Correct and the beta roadmap is outdated, it hasn't been updated since January, so its not really a good source to go by anymore. Live letter it 8/8, early access code registration is the same day as well. Phase 4 is expected to start some time after the live letter, just wait for Thursday and we'll know by then for sure.
Also completely off topic, but the beta forums are so awful, I wish someone would do a FFXIV ARR beta thread simulator video, for all the awful threads there.

So it was confirmed via a post on the JP beta forum that you can still not stream or release video during Phase 4/Open Beta, not until launch. It's rather annoying that SE only gave video rights to yoggcast of all people for the FFXIV ARR beta.
I can't see that being enforced very well, considering y'know. it's the last beta stage.
Twitch has been super hard lately with NDAs, mostly because they've been threatened by game companies, so they've been permabanning streamers for breaking NDAs lately. That and it isn't official, but supposedly there is a review embargo on FFXIV ARR, so they may keep the NDA in affect until the 27th.
Update: So apparently, ever since live letter and the mention of same sex marriage, the beta forums have exploded with SSM topics. If that wasn't enough, a ton of big name streamers, Crump. manvsgame, Toweliee, and Kripp have stated they're going to play FFXIV ARR and the beta forums have just exploded in hatred. I feel like each day closer to friday, is another day of retarded threads in the beta forum.
The same sex marriage threads on the forums are rage inducing and hilarious. Those forums are just terrible. Makes me wonder what the other language forums are talking about.

On topic so like a true no lifer, I spent all yesterday spread-sheeting my 3 days of beta! Finish getting my 15 PGL to 20, then LNC to 20, then level mining and botany to 20. From there I'll level Leatherworking, Blacksmithing and goldsmithing to 20, I've already calculated how many of what items/crystals I'll need. Thankfully I have a buttload of crystals from 1.0 so I'm covered on that! Time to spend my entire weekend in this chair!

Usually the retailer will send you a beta key via e-mail. Might be worth chasing up with them to make sure you get one.

And on other note, I looked at the max character thing, if I don't buy additional gametime at the start, does it mean I will only be able to have 1 character per server untill I get an additional 30 days of gametime?
