Then again, going by that second part of your post, and GoldenDargon's post, this is an [b]extremely[/b] awful first impression.
I finally want to try this game out, go through 2 hours of installing at night, check through the options on making the character, going past the intro, only to be disconnected due to emergency maintenance, which lasts long enough that I had to go to sleep during that time, then wake up to see that I only have a small amount of time to play it, and the fact that I wasn't even on the right server for FP, which doesn't even allow any new characters at the moment.
Yippee. Huge waste of time.

The entire weekend was an awful first impression for anyone doing open beta, but the good thing is that it had so much attention.
The reason the server locked down new characters was because of the overwhelming influx of beta population, that they had to add [i]six[/i] new servers and prevent characters from being made on the existing ones-

Presumably they'll have much larger datacenters for servers come launch, but a near release beta should be more about stress testing for server load capacity and such. Hopefully they learned something from it

I would save the level 20 glad quest, you will be wasting the exp from it.
Despite the massive group of people effected by 3012 and 90000, Square Enix has handled it really well. They wanted to see if the servers would break, and they did. I have to give it to them for individually opening up each person who posted in that thread, until they were able to deploy a real fix. I was one of the few lucky ones who never received an error, but I followed the forums closely. Many of my friends suffered from the errors. I managed to get my Mara to 20 and Glad to 16 before I decided to stop playing.
Some things I noticed: There is a quest gap in Thanalan from 10-15. There are no 11-14 quests in Western, Central, or Eastern Thanalan; and from what I can tell, this gap is isolated to Thanalan. This isn't that big of an issue if you are on your first class, but if it's your second class it can be annoying. Best recommendation is to do the hunting quests. Leves were only giving 1.8k exp every 10-15 minutes, while the hunting quests were giving 3-6k per, every 10-15 minutes. I got from 11-15 doing the first and second round of hunting quests in Thanalan.
As far as character names, I've seen many:

And the three most overused surnames were:
Highwind
Uchiha
Elric
No joke, I got into Copperbell Mines and all three other party members had the last name Highwind. People have no originality, and it irks me.

people don't seem to understand the concept of beta testing. It's not a free preview just to show it off and whet appetites, it's being a hamster on a wheel for testing purposes. Even if you're not reporting issues or digging around for exploits, your participation provides key data to making the actual gaming experience run as smooth as possible when it does release
having said that, yes this was a very rocky beta and i think they need to just run it for the rest of the week

I wouldn't mind a week, actually, or even just 3 to 5 days.
Even if I'll be disappointed that I know it's just 3, 5, or 7 days, at least I [b]actually[/b] got the time to explore places.
Luckily my server Sarg only went down once for 5 minutes the entire weekend. We didn't have many lag issues, though I did see quite a few people stuck in the infamous, in a duty but not in a duty bug. Though luckily I did report a few glitches and bugs, and managed to end my weekend on a good note!

not having any knowledge of actual combos, I could only assume Thaumaturge would be the primary base class, mixed with Arcanist or maybe conj
