THIS JUST IN Bobby Kotick names himself "the Picasso of this generation." Details at 11.
Not fun, enjoyable and entertaining
take for example if 'to kill a mockingbird' was somehow made into a game. it's a fantastic story, but it wouldn't be fun, would it?
That book makes me want to fall asleep.
The game needs both of these elements. The whole point of a game is to be interesting and amusing.
Well it would depend on how you define "fun". To me, fun is enjoyable, something that I want to do. Seeing a horror movie, learning something new or reading a great book is fun, therefore any kind of videogame that I enjoy I would classify as fun as well. Fun shouldn't have to be limited or tied to any certain type of experience because everything is subjective.
No, just look at the number of people who log into WoW and sit in the capitals everyday wishing for something "fun" to do.
Nah, im into a game that is boring and repetitive.
Yes, fun is necessary. Take MW2 for example, it wasn't fun, and the FP community hated it.
FP community is against-the-mainstream hipsters. The world loved it. [editline]10:19AM[/editline] And no, games do not have to be fun to be entertaining. I played Pathologic. It's the least fun game I've ever played. Seeing people on the streets dying of a disease I can't cure, robbing them of their little food or valuables so I can survive till the next day. All of this in an extremely bleak (and graphically, it looks like a pile of shit) town that is dying of causes that you have practically no chance of stopping. [editline]10:19AM[/editline] Oh yeah, it was one of the best games I've ever played
fun = more sales
Tell that to Kotick.
Tell that to Kotick.
Would people buy CoD if it wasn't fun?
Fun is for homosexuals, all real men play games with terrible gameplay and shiny graphics
Would people buy CoD if it wasn't fun?
They buy it because they enjoy playing it
They need both those options because IMO: If their fun, their immersive and have a good story. If they are immersive and have a good story, they have to be fun. As simple as that.
Don't we play games to have fun?
Games with better story are best with singleplayer. But have story and fun then you got Alan wake. In the Credits THE FIRST PERSON ON THE CREDITS WROTE THE WHOLE DAMN STORY!
Of course they have to be fun, that's why Mario games are still so successful, they focus their work on the actual gameplay and little to none on the story.
Would people buy CoD if it wasn't enjoyable?
I didn't know that I wouldn't enjoy MW2 before I bought it. In fact, the reason I bought it because all my friends were going to get it.
Yes, fun is necessary. Take MW2 for example, it wasn't fun, and the FP community hated it.
I think MW2 is fun :frown:
Some roleplayers answered no. Games have to be fun to be good. If a game doesn't have any enjoyable gameplay then it will be a flop.
Some roleplayers answered no. Games have to be fun to be good. If a game doesn't have any enjoyable gameplay then it will be a flop.
What you're talking about is financial success. My previous example, Pathologic, isn't fun to play at all. It's still a magnificent game and a great experience.
Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain isn't 'fun'. Yet, they are enjoyable for their storyline.
Well they weren't 'video games' but they were pretty much games for their gameplay.
video games aren't art

Would people buy CoD map packs if it wasn't enjoyable?
Depends. They also could buy the map pack since all of their friends bought it.
The way I see it, an immersive game with a good story has the potential to be a fun game, despite flawed gameplay. There's space for both good game design, and games as art, so I'd love to see both grow.
Of course they have to be fun, that's why Mario games are still so successful, they focus their work on the actual gameplay and little to none on the story.
Mario does have a story, it's just it's audience (i.e. people under 10) can't really be expected to understand what adults consider a "good" story. I think story and immersion itself is entertaining, but games do have to be fun.
I didn't know that I wouldn't enjoy MW2 before I bought it. In fact, the reason I bought it because all my friends were going to get it.
I bought it because I thought I would like it. And I do. I CAN have fun in it. Lots of it. Lets face it, some people's standards are set so high sometimes that they can't enjoy any games at all and start a hate bandwagon and a whine session that wont end just because they can't do well or don't like a couple of things. Sometimes their right, and other times their just stubborn. And you know why...
What dumb shit came up with that question. Of course video games have to be fun, you nitwit! What's the point of playing a game if it's not fun. Sure video games can be great ways to express art or an interesting story, but that's what Deviantart and TV is for.
Some of the best gaming experiences I had were Cryostasis, Silent Hill 2 and Killer 7 and that was not because they were fun games. The gameplay in those games was horrible.
You know, a good story can be part of the fun.
