Well generally, an immersive games with a good story (like oblivion) tend to be fun because of it.
While I love Oblivion, it's story was nowhere near good.
Depends.
They also could buy the map pack since all of their friends bought it.
Makes sense..
Yes, fun is necessary. Take MW2 for example, it wasn't fun, and the FP community hated it.
MW2 was fun. Just it had no story whatsoever and the gameplay was crap.
Other than that, it was really fun.
I bought it because I thought I would like it.
And I do.
I CAN have fun in it. Lots of it.
Lets face it, some people's standards are set so high sometimes that they can't enjoy any games at all and start a hate bandwagon and a whine session that wont end just because they can't do well or don't like a couple of things. Sometimes their right, and other times their just stubborn. And you know why...
It's not necessarily a bandwagon, considering that most of the people who didn't like MW2's multiplayer played the game.
If they are complaining about MW2's multiplayer, then they aren't having fun with it compared to several other games.
Yes, fun is necessary. Take MW2 for example, it wasn't fun, and the FP community hated it.
Actually it was fun but overhyped and has a lot of annoying fanboys so the FP community hated it.

No, it's not fun to get bullseyed across a map by some guy with a machine gun that has no recoil, and then get spawnkilled by a helicopter for the rest of the game.
Yes, fun is necessary. Take MW2 for example, it wasn't fun, and the FP community hated it.
It was fun the first 3 months you had it though. Then it became the most rage inducing game ever.
why would I play games if it wasn't fun?
Would people buy CoD map packs if it wasn't enjoyable?
People below the age of 13 (that have their mommies bankcards) don't know what fun is yet, else i can't explain why.
I loved the rides on the horse in SOTC but the game only truly shined when you where in the fun parts, when you where fighting them.
I play video games to have fun, why would anyone play a video game for any reason other than to enjoy it. Also, having a good story and being immersive almost ALWAYS makes a game fun, the only exception being when the gameplay is ridiculously simple and repetitive or overly complicated.
P.S. Firefox doesn't think "immersive" is a word, go away red squiggly line.
I think the title should be, "Do games have to be "stimulating?"
And then the answer is yes
It's not a game if you can't play it.
It's not playing if it's not fun.
Well... A game doesn't have to be fun to be considered a game, but you do have to be able to PLAY the game. It can't just be all artsy. Ever heard of a game called The Graveyard? You sit on your ass waiting until some old lady dies and then some old geezer ghost appears on screen and starts singing a song about the afterlife. No gameplay, AT ALL, even though it does happen to change, but it's like watching a movie and you don't know what you're going to get. And if a game isn't fun, and is just boring then it gets less sales and makes people who play games such as myself belligerent. No, a game doesn't have to be fun, but why play a non-fun game?

I disagree.
Play refers to a range of voluntary, intrinsically motivated activities that are normally associated with pleasure and enjoyment
The Graveyard isn't a game. It's more like an interactive movie or something.
While The Graveyard may appeal to some, it's not fun to play. You hardly play it even. Its more like pushing the go button on your dvd player.
A game has to be played. Someone has to interact with it and have the intention of having fun.
But having an good, immersive story is fun.
No obviuosly GAMES dont need good GAMEplay. :downs:
You know, like the graveyard on steam.
No, they don't have to be fun. They have to be painfully boring and pointless.
No, they have to be entertaining. (its a medium of entertainment)

Ico doesn't count because it is fun AND it is art.
Games are used for entertainment, they are an entertainment medium, therefore they should be.
The especially artsy types are interactive art, not games (Bold statement with many holes)
After all, if a game provides nothing, is it a game?
story - fun = book not game
story - fun = book not game
That's a movie. Books can't handle 1080i and 720p resolutions.

still not art
if the game didn't have a gameplay element, it would be a movie.
Video games
are
games
that use
video
