Note that race X portals are very similar to combine portals, as they are planes instead of points.
The geneworm is not necessarily the "thinking machine behind race X", but merely a creature capable of moving across dimensions. The race X could use the portals created by the geneworm to invade earth.
Though that doesn't fit very well to what we know about the combine. Is it confirmed that the geneworm was unique?
The race X seem a bit too savage to be the combine. Maybe a slave race.

It was just a "biological resource management factory" that was intended to assimilate Earth's resources for Race X. Shock Troopers are the intelligent masterminds behind their race.

If they were a slave race than the combine would be able to create portals as quickly and easily as they did, since they'd have Race X's technology at their disposal.
The combine would also be able to teleport individuals in since Race X has done that, too.

I thought Sprites were Xen-exclusive. What are they anyway?

I thought the Sprites were a byproduct of all that teleportation. Sorta like how in DA:O or Warhammer, rips in the Fade/Warp are byproducts of lots of death.
I thought Sprites were Xen-exclusive.
It's debatable if the very similar-looking glows we see in Half-Life are supposed to be the same as the Sprites seen in Opposing Force. If you check the sprites folder in OpFor, you'll see that Gearbox was toying with the idea of giving the Sprite creature an entirely new and unique texture as some unused variations exist. However, they obviously went with an edited version of one of the "flare" sprites (flare6.spr, to be exact) that often appeared in Half-Life around temporal disturbances and whatnot, hence the confusion. However, just to be clear, the Sprite's sprites are not identical to flare6.
I don't have time right now to re-read the entire Opposing Force strategy guide, but I believe there's enough indication to imply that Sprites are a Race X entity, not Xen-related.
I thought the Sprites were a byproduct of all that teleportation.
The Sprites in Opposing Force are explicitly described as being alien creatures used (presumably just by Race X) to charge the alien portal gates.
Race Is cannon
only they appear in OF
the Race X was introduced to add variety to the game
