The quality of video games has declined over the past 10 years.

This is why I go back and pick up games I never played during that era, like Parasite Eve and Phantasy Star IV.
Look at the top selling early console (NES/Genesis) games, see alot of similar names?

I said late 1990s, not early 1980s...

Btw it's not so much nostalgia, I grew up in the PS2/GC era like most of you guys did.
Generally, things appear worse the older you get.
The joy you once had gets gradually replaced by a jaded bitterness.

The average quality has decreased, but I think the amount of quality games has risen.
It wasn't a golden age, we just only remember the best games from that time period. Of course we are going to forget the shitty ones, just like we will present day.
It's not the games that have gotten worse; it's the players.
I agree, but it's not like every game after the early 2000's is terrible. It's just that the ratio of bad games to good games released has drastically increased. There's still some good games being released today, like Fallout 3, CoD 4, etc.
Seriously? Starcraft II, Call of Duty 4, and even some of the Halo games other than Halo: CE were pretty good.
There's always been shit games and there always will be.
I'll admit there's more bad games now than back then but they were still there, we just remember the good and leave behind the bad. One of the main problems is game companies mess with all the fruitless stuff, they waste time on "HERPA DERPA OMG AWSOOM GRAFIKS!11!" and having every single character with a different voice actor that they waste over half their budget.
If the game industry went back to Halo:CE and Half Life days where they used the same voice actor for 90% of the NPCs then they'd save mountains of money and time. They also need to stop paying so much attention to the multiplayer aspects, yes mutliplayer is what gives a game longativity but look at Mw2, they tried too hard and ended up making unbalanced and broken multiplayer but the story of it was interesting and fun to play but too short.
So yes, there's always been bad games but with game companies success comes their greed in making lots of eye candy and bland multiplayer making more bad games than good+bad games back then put together.
Older games are shit, the only reason people don't think that is because they don't look at the shit bargain bin titles that no one bothered to play solely because they're shit in a few years people aren't going to be going "GOD DAMN I FUCKING WISH IT WAS THE 90s EVERYTHING WAS TOTALLY BETTER THEN!!"
I bought XIII and NOLF 1/2 in a bargin bin. I found them great.
These were games that I that I ignored several times when I was a kid when I used to go to Gamestop. I later bought them when I was 13 and enjoyed it more than other games.
OP, I direct you to Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 among other pieces of art that have MANY people who don't care two shits about gaming in general, in awe. These games created quite a stir at last years Bafta Awards.
You're about to be told you have your nostalgia goggles on, although I agree with you 100%.
Except he does. 10 years ago there were A LOT of shitty games.
there is a good COD game every other year.
Mental Ward is all about making Kotick money by selling shovelware to peanutbrained 11 year olds who have strange mental illnesses that prevent them from seeing Imbalance, boringness, and shit.
Treyarch takes Mental Ward's shovelware and makes it something Fun, Balanced, and quality; thus driving the Console/COD kiddies away, driving the price down, and making a fun experience for the real gamers.
Its ironic though, Treyarch made the first and only console exclusive COD, yet they listen to the PC community more then Mental Ward ever will.

I never said every game back then was good. I never said every game now is bad.
I said that the amount of bad games now have increased and that the amount of good games has decreased.
And unless he says he does, you have no way of knowing whether he does or not.
I partly agree with you, But there have been some really great games, But it has been slowly declining. I've seen so many previously good series this decade.
My Dad always complains about how games in the 90's were never as good at the 80s. So I'm assuming its a time and place thing.
Would you look at this, YOU not liking games in within a company attending to the general public's needs. Amazing.
Snip - fail
You were doing LSD in 2000, now your doing weed in 2010
I played MW2 about 7 months ago, and I played Quake 2 last month. Can you guess, besides some bugs and annoying bosses, which I enjoyed more? :v:
I miss Heroes Of Might And Magic 3 :(
my thoughts on this are as such:
one of the best games i have ever played is saints row 2 and that is because the guys at volition understand that the majority of gamers are cunts who ,when given freedom in a game, just run around and fuck shit up.
what i mean is it's not about "safe" or "innovative" when it comes to a good game it all comes down to what the majority of people want in a game.
but thats just me.
I really don't agree, and it's pointless to try and ask me to produce 'facts' since this is entirely an opinion-based issue. I personally love every single Halo game that's been released (even Halo Wars, though not so much), and have had some of the most fun in my life playing them with my mates. I'm probably going to get bandwagoned by people calling it derivative or whatever, but I don't care because what's important is if you enjoy playing a game, not what other people think of it.
You dont have to play the games, and if you think modern games are so bad, why do you continue gaming? Just stop whining about the quality cause its fine. If you havent noticed, quality is actually better, voices pretty much sound like its the actual person acting infront of you, animations flow and look realistic, you're obviously just maturing and are too "srsbro". You wont be an outcast because you dont own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 6
I do miss the days when graphics were less important that the games behind them, but the indie scene shows a lot of innovation. Calling it a flat-out decline is just wrong.
Totally disagree. Diablo 3 is going to be legendary and starcraft 2 is a fantastic game. I really can't see how you can judge blizzard's work after starcraft 2 not being out for even a year ( which is they only game they released since WoW which is still strong after 6 years. )
And call of duty 4 was a great game and 5 was also pretty good.
Also it may seem that the older games have better quality but what's really going on is that the gaming industry wasn't as big back then, so there weren't that many quality games. Thats why everybody just stuck to the good games which wasn't a huge selection of.
Now there is a way higher standard for games making it harder to make. Which equals in what it may seem to be a decline in quality.

Uhmm, what about blizzard ? or Valve ?
The only reason why games are worse, is because it just got old. FPS are nothing special, RTS are being spammed by different companies and just few standing out. Back then, FPSes and RTSes were something as new as... something new that is now but wasn`t back then.
This too is a good point.
There were always crappy games, people just forget them overtime, so it seems that there were more good ones before.
x was better y years ago is always that way
Yeah this too, anybody who has watched AVGN before can safely say. There were ALOT of shitty games back in the day.
