I would pay good money to have this. A first-person horror game in space, where you are the monster. Awesome.

Natural Selection?
Have fun with a cease and desist. Blizzard is very protective of their IP and has hammered a couple of other RTS mods in the past - the CnC generals one being a notable example.
Something loosely inspired by starcraft - sure, something directly using the IP content big no. Same goes for the visual design. That dropship is unmistakeable for instance.
That's when you call it Starcrack: Force. or Spacecraft: Source if you don't wanna sound too out there.
[editline]31st May 2011[/editline]
Of course they can also argue that all content was made from scratch by their team and that nothing was taken from Blizzard. Then the only problem would be the similarities. I'm sure there's a loophole for that as well.

Im sure with enough skill, you could make it in starcrafts editor. would be over the size limit though.
The abbreviation of your game is a sofa company.
Blizzard will shut you down.
Trust me.
Sad but true. Seeing as how they were ready to shut down a guy for using the name World of Starcraft for a Star Craft 2 mod.. then I can't even begin to imagine what they will do to these guys. Time will tell.
Very surprised by all the negativity here. Necro, I and along with all the other team members know that there will always be a possible chance of getting shutdown by a C&D. We've been hard at work for the past two years trying to make something a possibility so that everyone could enjoy a different genre of a game that they love why else would you be looking at this post or even the comments. What I'm trying to say is that even if we get shutdown we known that mod making is about the learning experience and we would be happy to start another project without complaint, and + if we do get a C&D its just telling us we are getting to popular and big to ignore.

Actually Blizzard told him to rename it and that they support his mod. In fact, they offered him a job when it's done.

If I recall they still were going to shut him down at first. But then told him to just change the name or something.

Yeah, they first told him to shut it down, but after a huge community outcry on the Blizzard forums they went to him and tried playing it. After that they just told him to change the name and he would be golden.

Also: Why the funnies?
it's funny because commanderpt was all "this one guy just wanted to make a fun mod and they tore him a new butthole :(" and then you point out that not only did they not tear him a new butthole, they gave him a job for his work

You can't call it "Starcraft" anything. You'll need a new name. This is all it will take for Blizzard to get the F off your back, when they find you. You won't be able to use ANY of their art resources; no voices, no ripped terrain or models or animations-- nothing.
If you create it all from scratch, with different "heroes" (No Sarah Kerrigan, for example) create your own campaigns & maps, and don't call it Starcraft, then Blizzard will have nothing to bitch at you about. They don't own all space-based RTS games.
idea:
add a shitload of glowy lights all over your vehicles and change up the materials of the soldiers and you're golden
"clearly, Blizzard, this is not that spaceship from starcraft; look at that fucker glow."

What? Let me use an analogy to tell you why that's stupid.
You create and copyright a car.
I steal your design BUT I add a better engine and sell it in a color that you don't.
It doesn't matter if I make it look or act differently, it still looks exactly like your car.
You don't think anyone will notice that fact, that I won't get sued or whatever?

Pretend I'm Boeing. I make planes that transport people around the globe. There is a cockpit, two wings, a rudder, elevators, ailerons, flaps, landing gear, and it's painted white. My plane seats 550 people.
You're Airbus. You make planes that transport people around the globe. There is a cockpit, two wings, a rudder, elevators, ailerons, flaps, landing gear, and it's painted white. Your plane seats 550 people.
To 99% of the population, they're the same plane. They serve the same purpose, and of course follow the same design.
There is ZERO copyright infringement in that real-world scenario.
I imagine it'd be the same for what OP is working on. They can look the same, act the same, both be colored the same, AND still be legally distinct.

Yes, but he's literally saying just because the models would have lights on them and would have different colors they wouldn't be the same thing. Hence the "color and engine" analogy. it's still the same model.

What if I add spikes to the nose then add different fins to it and make a different body? It's different.

if he didn't rip it, it's not the same model. If it's modeled from scratch, I think you'd be surprised how different his model and the one from Starcraft II will be.
Wha' about stop talking about teh plagiasm?

You need to make it distinctly different. Minor details won't stop something not being synonymous. Hence the impounding of counterfeit clothes from ADIGAS and similar. They only resemble them visually but the intent of plagiarisation is clear.

Exactly what I meant before, though you said it much better than I could have.
Just make it look Starcraft inspired but not actually Starcraft. Naming the Marines as Space Soldiers or renaming Siege Tanks to Battle Tanks for example. :v:
If you're not making money off of it, what's the big deal?
Learning about modding, making people feel good, and just a respect to the famous game. May be they don't like it :D

There is no big deal, it's just companies overreacting.
