I have a habit of building up my nation and economy, and neglecting my military. Then someone attacks, and I scramble to recruit as many units as possible. Somehow I never lose as much as a city.

Okay then, screw it, going to start a new game warmongering to the extreme, going to mass cities as tightly packed as possible, 3 tiles between them all. and just mass as many units as possible. Is there any disadvantage to having 0 gold apart from the inability to panic buy units? Do you lose happiness or growth or something? If there's no huge disadvantage, I am just going to do it. but... that will have to be in the morning... afternoon or evening... it's 4 AM.

that only happens when you hit negative in your treasury
Found out you can build roads on mountains as Carthage. Don't know if other players can use them though.
I would like to correct you by saying that the Swedish were in the modern era when that was written (now in the atomic era), on prince difficulty. Seeing as Sweden is in a very good mood, we have decided to give you one chance to retract your slanderous accusation before you're put on the (now very short) list of Enemies of the glorious Realm.
I'm a quarter Swedish, so let's just say that it was a comment made in jest :v: Seriously though, how the fuck are you in Atomic age so early? On Prince, at that?
If I want to make my move on Arabia, now would be the time. They just finished the Manhattan Project. I'm too busy to fight Arabia, since I'm trying to take Australia for its uranium and luxury resources.

On Prince, at that?
A mod called Historic Eras. It's meant to slow down research and speed up building so that you'll get more appropiate tech and constructions for the specific Era. Sweden's scientists can't be held back though. After the game came by to tell us to slow down, we applied our (then theoretical) AF=S² formula. Let's just say that it was the only visit we ever had.

Also turned off diplomatic victory. Started the game, if I ninja'd anyone before they could get their suggestion in, FUCK YOU, I'm not restarting.

Can you get an Earth map that's larger than the default one?
Can you get an Earth map that's larger than the default one?
There's a lot of different maps on the Steam Workshop, take a look and find one that suits.
My "smooth" game is running alright now. I'm playing as Harun Al-Rashid on a huge map with five other leaders. To the north lies Queen Elizabeth, she's on her period and pumping out cities just to gain land (luckily for me, her production rate will die down since the AI never realize that spamming settlers and cities will only kill the happiness of her people.) Sadly, her first impression of me was a disappointing one. Some time after bumping into her, I decided to send a great merchant to her land, so that we could get off to a good start. Wrong, within 5 turns of my merchant heading to London, she asked for a trade agreement (Embassies, typical stuff), denounced me, and then told me to not settle cities near hers. The final move of hers was done after my merchant had made it to London, so I had to scramble him around for a while thanks to Barbarian encampments popping up all over the place. I was getting bombarded by them from all sides, and literally went to war with them, if that's the proper word. I did the only thing I could do (which yielded decent results), I rushed myself, buying buildings here and there, spamming farms, mines, plantations (I spawn in a field of at least 5 spice tiles, felt like luck), and whatever else could thrust my people forward and to the top of the food chain. Things began to calm down once most of them had been tossed back into their inferior log camps, but things went downhill after I built Damascus just north of Mecca. Queen Elizabeth I, in her common style, swaggered her fat ass on down south, built Coventry and another city just north of Damascus. Then the bitch has the audacity to declare war on me because "We're too close" or some crap like that. So, I spent the next 50 turns or so repelling longbowmen, bowmen, pikemen, trebuchets, and even swordsmen with nothing but Damascus' defenses, some crossbowmen, and a single pikeman (yes, pikeMAN, his squad was crushed down and he managed to survive on his own.) The war was a short one, but still a conflict nonetheless, and had me worried that Eliza the Bitch would try to pull a "trading agreement" on me (Bombard me with trading agreements for embassies, open borders, beg for money in return for cheap shit or nothing at all, and then go "Ha-ha! I never really was your friend! I hope you enjoy my legion of cannons on your border!") However, when she proposed a peace treaty, she asked for very little (a sum of gold, some gold every turn, and that I make peace with her allied city-states.) After paying her off, I bounced back financially fairly quickly, and was ecstatic beyond belief. She didn't even backstab me after the peace treaty grace period was over (not yet, anyway.) I might even consider swapping embassies with her. Halfway through our conflict, I sent out a caravel to explore the world, since there were four other nations to meet. It took my ship a while, but at the very far western end of the world, I bumped into China. There were no greetings, no trade agreements, or any kind of banter, as I just wanted to hurry up and meet the other leaders. Maybe trade a bit by the time I was done, or get a friendship declaration from one of them. But part of me was feeling slightly uneasy after I made peace with the Queen, and I tried my best to squash that lump of worry. No more than a handful of turns later, I bump into the devil himself, after specifically making sure he wouldn't appear in this match at all. He is Khorne, the conqueror of worlds, he devours empires in single gulps, swooping down and slashing up city-states like a scythes precision to short grass. I met Gandhi. I can already tell how this match will turn out, and how mad I'll be at the end of it. My end, at least.
My progress so far, I started with enough Elephants and horses to give my first 5 cities a circus each. One city was stubborn about the circus, didn't notice the horses nearby Global Diplomacy, Spain doesn't like me and is about to declare war, Persia and Babylon hate each other and are both suckering up trying to get me to join their war. Ethiopia has made a declaration of friendship, but I don't trust it. Catherine of Russia is chilling up in the Siberian Wastes likely about to march to Germany and invade, "they covet lands you own" There are two unmet players, one is in first place for tech and gold, the other is in final place in the gold and tech rankings. One of these unmet players is Gandhi. [editline]4th July 2012[/editline] It's almost like I'm psychic, Spain declared war one turn after that screenshot.
Why are your cities so close together?
Why are your cities so close together?
Because I had the stupid idea of "If I can get more cities, I can get a bigger army and to get more cities in my limited space, I can have them closer together" It worked though, a sudden rush of units from all directions beat back the Spanish invasion. They didn't even throw a stone at Hamburg [editline]4th July 2012[/editline] And... the war is over, Spain has surrendered to Germany, losing cotton, 1000 gold and 12 gold per turn.

(I'm not the only one that does that right?)
Already doing it, Spain asks me not to settle near them... I agree... they found a city 4 tiles away from Munich in the middle of the forest. They've crossed the line.
I think we agree. The past is over.
Doesn't matter, game crashed and the autosave is before that forest city was even founded.
Geez, I think I'm breaking Civ IV. I've got a stack of 97 naval units, about 70~ of which are transports holding 4 units each. Attempting to move them from the Indian supercontinent to Mongolian land freezes the game from a moment to a minute each time. Something tells me I'll never achieve world domination :v: [editline]5th July 2012[/editline] Yeah, I think for the duration of this war I'm gonna have to remove anti-aliasing and unit animations in some effort to improve performance. Lawdy this is some tough freezing.
It begins. [t]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/1172310087598235301/0D9BB7555C54B335C306E98A2457570DAF8EB229/[/t] I've found him...
Playing a fairly large scale game as the Germans. Was initially on a continent with Dido, Egypt, Ol' Monty, and Darius. Darius and I conqured Egypt, leaving me with his capital and another city behind the great wall, and Darius with an unseen amount of cities behind the mountains and clouds. Dido attempted to wage war on Darius, and while her forces were away I pushed into her territory and set up ambushes in the expansive jungle that separated our lands and Darius'. After that it came time to deal with Montezuma, which was irritating because he decided to build a stretch of territories around mine and through the jungle, however, thanks to my ability to pump out Landsknetch troops in one turn and with 2 'drill' upgrades I was able to send wave after wave of cannon fodder at Monty's cities while my canons moved from city to city chipping them down. At this point it's around the 19th century, and me and Darius have been exchanging blows. I've got better artillery and more experienced troops guarding my border (which is also protected via a mix of the great wall, the expansive jungle, and those shitty colonies Monty set up), but he still decided to erect a bunch of cities in my land. My small pocket of troops is currently moving from city to city, capturing them so we have no loose ends when we eventually decide to push into Darius' territory. On the other end of the world I have England, Ethiopia, Babylon, and Byzatine or however that's spelled. Met everyone of them except Byz, but was aware of her and others because of a buggy announcement informing me that "So and so attempted a coup in X city state but failed".

One day I want to see somebody make some Civ 5 fan art of Ghandi sitting in this throne room, overlooking some fascist industrial super state as mushroom clouds don on the horizon. Then I snap back to reality and remember that could be considered slander and tasteless, considering, you know, it's Ghandi.

Does anyone know if you can change the default match settings? Before Gods & Kings you could change values in the config ini file, but they're not in it anymore.
Do you guys think Gods and Kings expansion is worth it? The only thing that's preventing me from getting it is that 30 dollar price tag.
