Duplicate luxury resources don't raise happiness, only the first one does.
Duplicate luxury resources don't raise happiness, only the first one does.
I know that, I was talking unique resources. The people who had only one unique luxury had more happiness than I did when I had 3. I just don't know what they're doing right and what I'm doing wrong.

Try to build up buildings that increase happiness in your existing cities before making more. Sometimes expanding too quickly tanks your happiness, so you need to make sure your infrastructure can take it.
ok so i got this game and im kind of terrible at it every time i start to get somewhere one of the other nations just randomly declares war on me for no reason and i can never manage to get enough military to kill them and by the late game i'm invariably behind on military tech because the ai is just too fast im tempted to just download a mod that makes the ai not cheat :U

Classic beginning mistake, I did it for god knows how long before someone told me.
ok but how big is big enough im a little stuck on how big empires should be, i havent had much luck with big sprawling empires so maybe i ought to just make a small one and avoid expanding too far, and just kind of fortify and rush tech or i could just bulldoze everything
and by the late game i'm invariably behind on military tech because the ai is just too fast
I get this a lot, too. I always feel like I'm the last getting out of eras, and by that time they're already onto the next era. I can't keep up. How do I dispense more science (other than mass library spam)?
Make mods work in Multiplayer already. I want my AI Anti-cheat on Prince mod.
I downloaded a Europe map.. but is there any way to remove the clouds so I don't have to discover it? Call it lazy, it's just if I want to be England or France, I'd rather start in the proper location. Or even better, is there something that accurately places England, France, Germany, Denmark?
Battering Ram is the most broken shit ever. Ragequit after Attila 3 shot my city with 2 battering ram.
I haven't played with the battering ram, but I've found that if your military is behind in technology, it is quite difficult to take over cities. Not just because you do little damage, but because you get ripped apart. G&Ks makes it a lot harder to take cities, which is nice in my opinion.
i remember back in civ IV where rushing archers at the beginning of the game was a legit strat it doesn't work very well in civ v, sadly
i remember back in civ IV where rushing archers at the beginning of the game was a legit strat it doesn't work very well in civ v, sadly
I was playing a lan game in Civ 4 with my friend. He declared war at me and tried to rush me with spearmen and whatnot. The only path he had was through a very narrow part of land, so I placed many archers on each tile. When one tile was depleted, the row would move up. Half of my cities were producing archers to replace the line. Long story short, this continued on for a long time, as I upgraded the archers as my tech went on, and he upgraded his units. He never broke through, and we were always at a stalemate. We never "finished" the game sadly. It's common for us to remember the great war. (He was so pissed when it was happening, which fueled the fire of his war machine.) Not sure if this is the same "Rush Archers" strategy, but mine was a working defensive one. It did cost a lot of gold in maintenance, but it was so worth it.

I like setting up artillery behind a line of soldiers in fortresses along my borders so we can pretty much shell the enemy before they get close.

The mod can also respawn your units to another position on the map if you don't like current one.
Welp, I find myself in quite a pickle. As the Iroquois, I have been attempting a science or culture victory (not sure which yet) on my own peaceful little island in the middle of the ocean. All's going well... there, but on the nearby mainland, the Mongolians have been conquering almost all of the continent. In two brilliant coups while the Mongols were raiding other civs, I was able to capture two of their cities. I've been able to broker peace for the time being, but they have just taken over Spain and I'm the only other major power left on the continent, with the only two civs remaining being Songhai and Austria and they're both down to one and two cities respectively (and Songhai is in such a pathetic state that they stole masonry from me back in the 1600s :v:). There are other civs, too, but they're all the way across the ocean and I don't think any of them actually have any ships capable of crossing ocean yet. So now I feel like they're going to go for me next because I've been on their hit list for a while (they tried to raid my city once but I pushed them back). Most of their tech is one tier above mine and I can't really compete against their units and all I have are a few crossbowmen. How screwed am I?
This fucking game... I just played a round with a friend, it lasted five hours and only ended because I got a space shuttle science victory. It was so much fun, though. A really great game, without a doubt.

You could try maybe attempting to hold your foothold on that city by purchasing and churning combat units to stem the tide, or just raise both of them, and then focus on locking down your little island with a competent Navy.
So is there a cap at maximum turns of golden age? By getting a golden age from myself, one from policies and then a few turns after, one through a wonder, and using 4 generals I had 50 turns of golden age... But I'm wondering if it was coincidence or it if it caps at 50. What do you guys think?

Also does the game slow down for anyone else after a while? Mainly that "next turn" bit where the stuff for the AI is done. And no it didn't last forever, but well over an hour though I didn't keep track.

The Mongolians are now in the Industrial era and are positioning riflemen all across my borders for another attack, while I only have a frigate and a few Gatling gunners. To make matters worse, one of my core cities is starving and the only tiles around are tundra and ocean, of which neither help my situation. If that's not bad enough, now Ethiopia seems to be on the path to a cultural victory and I have literally no power to stop him. Now how screwed am I?

Is this game worth getting if you don't get the expansion?
Is this game worth getting if you don't get the expansion?
Of course. The expansion is mostly extra features. However diplomacy and other parts of the game that were fixed in Gods and Kings won't be optimal. Nothing to make doubt over.
Of course. The expansion is mostly extra features. However diplomacy and other parts of the game that were fixed in Gods and Kings won't be optimal. Nothing to make doubt over.
Also naval combat is near worthless in the vanilla game (or so I've been told), while it can actually make much more of a difference in Gods and Kings.

I heard it's related to worker spam, since I've seen mods that limit civs to just a couple workers speed the game up a bit.
