So I bought Civ V a day or two ago and it's quite an expansive game. Any tips for a newcomer to the series? I'm playing a multiplayer match with my friend against some computers and we're both pretty lost. It's domination, so what's the best way to win by domination?

Unless you're playing on a low difficulty like below warlord I would suggest going for a science victory. Also make sure you've played the tutorials and if you're still lost have a look at this video and the rest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYsmSuxVIBI might be a bit out of date though

I've always found a culture victory easiest.
On my first playthrough as Japan, I think it's on conquest. I just took out Jerusalem, holy fuck that was hard; had to try again 3 times whilst being attacked very aggressively from France on the other side. Korea best ally.
Welp I bougth Civ V on the Steam sale... I'm unsure if I should get Gods and Kings just right away as well, though...
I've always found a culture victory easiest.
It shouldn't be as easy now that some of the culture buildings have become religon buildings.
Is gods and kings worth 22 dollars on sale? It would finish off my money for the sale. Also does anyone else's CPU and GPU get really hot. My CPU got up to 68c during the next turn phase.
It's doing a lot of calculations. And yes, Gods and Kings is so worth it. It's hard for me to play without it anymore because it fixes so much stuff and add so much new stuff.

I always thought it would be fun to have special 'bonus' civilizations and leaders, like Darth Vader, which would only be in a game if you choose them to be.
I bought this a day before it went on sale :| Oh well, I'm having fun. My dad owns it as well so we play together... I need friends who play the same games as me.
My honest, good friend Shatteredwindow/Shatterednick gifted me the game. As he is a well favored person of mine. That's the one I always go for. I play on prince and usually start wiping out city states and other civs anywhere between 30 to 40 turns into the game. (Depending entirely on what era I start in. I like to start at Renaissance so I can have my religion but I'm close to industrialisation. I don't particularly like the earlier eras)
I managed to get one of my friends addicted to this game, and he absolutely hates any game that doesn't hold his hand. That is a sign of a great game.

I don't play many games in eras earlier then Renaissance. I really don't like early game civ. Stuff moves too slowly for my liking. What I really hate is how you can't form religions if you start in the Industrial Era or beyond. What kind of crap is that?
How can I get other civs to become allies instead of just friends? I know there are some in my game that I could become allies with but I simply can't get them to make that jump.

Just bought the civ pack yesterday, and playing England with with 5 cities is fun. Although I have a problem with ships exploding OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE.
Finally could afford Civ5 and bought it yesterday. Will buy Gods & Kings as well when I'll afford it. Could take a while though.

It's like they hated their own religion.
Wow, you've even managed to get friendzoned in Civ
Playing on emperor I am quite able to be friends with most everyone. It mostly has to do with not pissing the AI off. It is important to pay attention to the global politics and to be aware of leader personalities, and most important not sharing borders with an aggressive civ. Germany always seems to be friendly with you right before he sends in a massive army.
Submarines
As far as I know, he's in Medieval and I'm in industrial.
Just got this with 5 others friends, all of us learning as we go in multiplayer against one another. We haven't been able to put it down since the sale. Any tips or guides to getting an upper hand in multiplayer battles?
I usually just let them get pissed, so then they declare war on me. When only one declares war, regardless of size, it is easy to handle. Stay on the defense at first, with archers atop hills near your cities and infantry guarding them. The city whittles down enemy units severely and so do the archers, while the infantry keeps them at a distance. Once the enemy military has been brought down to size, invade them. You shouldn't have lost many (if any) units because the cities and archers decimate enemy forces, but if you did, rebuild your strength. That is usually my tactic. Not sure about the harder difficulties, I play on the normal one (I cannot remember the name, I think it's prince. I don't know, the one above warlord)
If anybody wants some great strategies, I suggest watching MadDignn's deity lets plays. He is quite a good player and he prefers not to use cheap tactics (like trading a luxury for 240g then declaring war). http://www.youtube.com/user/SBFMadDjinn?feature=g-u-u
