Definitely. I couldn't get into civ3 too much for some reason, but I'm really enjoying the demo.
If you like the Demo, then you WILL like the real game, so go out and get it.. it is worth it
Dude, this game is fucking amazing. Here's my story:
Alright, so I chose the "Earth" map, which is pretty damn big. However, I only chose 8 civilizations - I realized later that I should've picked a LOT more. I start off in North America as Rome, next to Michigan. "Cool!" I think, as I begin to expand my empire. However, soon I realized the truth: I was the only one on the entire continent. And after that, I found out I was the only damn one in the entire western hemisphere!
Needless to say, my first one-hundred turns were lonely. Desperate, I sent a single Trireme down around the coast of South America, searching for somebody, anybody.Eventually, it ended up going up the west coast to alaska, and across alaska to Russia. There, I met the Chinese. I was overjoyed! Finally, after 105 damn turns, I found another civilization.
China and I proved to be great friends, trading resources, opening our borders, and making a research agreement. I soon met Germany, the Iroquois, France and Siam. Initially they were all quite friendly. Seeking a foothold amongst my new allies, I created a city in Japan, and destroyed Warsaw, who were also occupying the island. I then set my sites towards the mainland - china was ripe for the taking.
I made allies with Genoa, and together we attacked China. We swept through the continent, using our superior technology to dominate China. Together, we sieged Beijing, and China was gone. Life was good.
However, at this point France, the Iroquois and Siam all declared war on me, simultaneously. My military was spread out and weakened from the taking of China, and I could not stop the tide. One by one, my cities fell. Now, only Japan remains. Through clever positioning, I have been able to stop the advancing Iroquois hordes... but how long can I hold? That remains to be seen.
Basically you just played the alternate universe of actual history. Starting off in America, setting sail for the new world to the east towards Europe
oh what the fuck
Alexander settles a hex away from one of my cities
I tell him not to do that again
He tells me that my city being too close is poison for this relationship, and ends our pact of cooperation.
Really hope they add in some tile and resource variety in some future patches. Also, the transport of resources like wheat or cows to where food is needed etc, would be really, really nice and helpful.
But anyway, while we're telling stories, I've got two games going at the moment.
Game 1: Rome, on a "Huge" Continents map. Two main continents, separated by a sizable ocean. The year is roughly 1984. I've extinguished all the main competition and spread out through most of my continent. Two small English cities, one Indian city, and a couple city states including my allies Genoa, Belgrade, and Hanoi, also occupy the continent. However, on the other continent, the Egyptians have about twenty cities, and a military that could "wipe me off the face of the planet." I'm also much more advanced technologically. I've got bombers, nuclear submarines, a carrier/destroyer fleet, and modern armor groups. And yet the Egyptians are huge. They're dominating the now weak French and almost dead Chinese. They literally have colored an entire continent with their yellow, and i'm terrified. Unfortunately, framerate lag due to number of players and size of map has made this save all but uncontinuable.
Game #2: Playing as Germany on a standard sized fractal map. Map is basically one long continent that forms a rough upside down U across the top and sides of the map. The bottom middle is filled with another large continent. As the Germans, I started on the bottom right of the upside down U. At the top, roughly, are the Russians, then the Americans, then the English. Finally, I found the French controlling the entire island continent to the south. I made quick friends with everyone but the English, who are all but exterminated. When the Americans and the Russians both came to me asking me to wipe the other out, I sided with the Americans and the French and am currently approaching Moscow. The year is about 1850.
Greece is angry at me now.
What the hell, A
we used to be bros
Is it me or are all the cities wrong placed?
Stockholm was in Africa, Budapest in Sweden etc.
I really want a crash fix for strategic view.
Invasion of Rome went better than expected.
Just played the Demo, never played a Civ game before, but it seems really awesome. I'm definitely going to get this when I have the money.
Like most people here, I have been an avid Civ player since Civ I, and I have to say Civ V is such an abomination compared to cIV BtS expansions, not to mention the worst of the series by far.
I believe I can speak for the majority of the Civ players here regarding features that absolutely must be brought back to Civ V, hopefully in future patches or expansions. These features are so essential to the whole Civ experience that I am not sure why Firaxis removed them in this generation.
1. We want our stack back: 1UPT makes moving units around so tedious and it's hard to get into formations in battle.
2. We want the old strategic resource system back: who came up with the idea that one iron mine can only generate one swordman? If I have an iron mine, I should be able to put it to use and build as many iron units as I want.
3. We want our slider back: the ability to shift the macro focus of your empire to either wealth/science/happiness is more dynamic than the current system.
4. We want local happiness back: CiV's global happiness system makes the game MUCH shallower, it's like playing a game for 10-year-olds.
5. No more purchasing units/buildings plz: it makes no sense to buy a building and it's suddenly there the next turn. Firaxis please remove this feature. Realistically, gold should haste the production process, but not producing things out of thin air.
6. We want religion back: religion is what makes cIV a much deeper game than all others in the series, including ciV. Why did they remove religion?
7. Bring back the graphics of cIV: as many players have noted since the game's release, ciV's graphics is absolutely terrible. Rivers and trading posts are just plain ugly. It's just about on par with Civ III if you ask me.
8. We want the old map grid back: sure, hexes are interesting at first glance and seems to make the game look complicated (reminds me of a boardgame), but after several games they begin to get on our nerves.
oh my god this person is an idiot and actually thinks most people agree with him
Russia was beating me all the way until the last turn. After I decided I wasn't getting enough votes to win a diplomatic victory, I just settled a few more cities.
And on the very last turn I pulled ahead.

Does anyone know why railroads seem to vary in size? One is very thick and appears to have a road on both sides, while the other is a thin strip.

I haven't played the actual game yet, only the demo (no moniez) but if they're right, I'd partially have to agree with 2, 3, and 6.

Letting one iron mine supply the entire nation with an infinite supply of iron is unrealistic and shallow. Requiring more mines adds some strategy, and forces you to defend your resources. Regardless he is wrong because I have never seen any resources only give one "unit", aside from uranium.
3 I could care less about, 6 is the only legitimate complaint that has actually been brought up before

Alrighty then, although I can somewhat understand why they took out the slider, considering there's only two things to choose from now (culture/research), and you can easily control which one you specialize with.

They vary in size if it is a trade route or not. So big roads/rail roads means a trade route to the capital.
I think.
i think there should be a mod that allows you to see battles as if it's one of the total war series, maybe even able to control them. I think it would be rather nice.
Im not saying i don't like the game, it just would be a nice addon to have

Build lots of colosseums and other happiness producing buildings. Lots of them.
I owned most of the world in my last game and by the end I had like 60 happiness.

People were like this for Civ IV when it came out too. A newly released game with bugs and glitches doesn't stand up much to a fully explored game with two expansion packs worth of content. I will buy Civ 5 eventually, but not before it gets some content.

but when I do that I will lose money, If I build trading posts then there won't be enough food AAAGH
Germany doesn't like me because I killed some city states
Met Gandhi after first 3 turns.
Switched production to warriors.
Gandhi was eliminated from the game before bronze was developed.
