Civilization V - Civ: causing all nighters since 1991

Yeah, it's pretty useless. Spam units instead.
Well guys, I've decided that before I'll start an AAR, I'll first write a short story about my current game, or rather, just its background.
I'm playing as the Arabian civilization on a huge Terra world, king difficulty. I won't have many screenshots and the one I will have will show the current position even though I will talk about events from the past, because I didn't take screenshots back then. I also don't remember the specific dates so any dates I mention will be just guesses.
An empire it became: 1500 BC.
The Arabian people have always been peaceful, relying on trade and barter to support their growing presence over the Arabian peninsula. Their capital, Mecca, sits at the tip of the peninsula and is in a strong location to control the trade that moves into and out of the peninsula.
[IMG_thumb]http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/3720/50938918.jpg[/IMG_thumb]
The peninsula is populated by 3 other peoples: The city of Hanoi is located to the southwest of Mecca, the island-city of Edinburgh is due west of it, and the city of Bucharest lies to the southeast.
Peace has always reigned between these cities and the Arabian peoples, but it seems peace was at risk, for the Chinese kingdom to the north had different thoughts in their mind. The Chinese managed to secure an alliance with Hanoi, which would supply them with fine warriors in exchange for valuable gifts. Harun al-Rashid, ruler of Mecca, realized this was a serious threat to his people. He organized a band of horsemen warriors, and quickly overrun the people of China.
[IMG_thumb]http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/885/17053113.jpg[/IMG_thumb]
Peace was struck with Hanoi, as Harun knew better than to disturb the peace that reigned seemingly forever in the Arabian peninsula, and instead sought to expand to the east were the lands were plenty.

By 500 BC the empire was secure and prosperous, technological advancements were made, and the Arabian people managed to strike trades with several civilizations from distant lands. Their closest neighbors however, the French, were close friends with the now-extinct Chinese people, and forever held a grudge against the Arabians for eliminating them.
The French tried to undermine the Arabs, they bribed other civilizations to stop trading with them, and this hurt the trade-loving Arabians very badly. Harun knew that again he would have to solve his problems by the force of the sword, and by the turn of the millenia he had amassed an army of horse-riding warriors the world has yet to see. The city of Orleans quickly fell to the might of the Arabian horsemen, and later the faraway capital of Paris also fell. The Arabians were victorious once again!

I'll write the next chapter in a few more hours, it's WAY more interesting. And sorry about not showing the minimap, but I don't want to spoil what happens.
What are you guys talking about, Ghandi always asks me for peace.
Well he did, I killed him off :3:
I'm up for some multiplayer any time, really want to verse some REAL people.
The space victory is broken for me, I can't put the parts into the capital.
The really hot thing about Catherine though was her lines: "Is that a treaty in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
I like Catherine because she's hot and elegant
What's the best way to produce more science?
:science:
Large territory then go down the left path of Rationalism, gives you +2 science for every trading post. Boosted my science up to 400-something.
rationalism is fucking awesome
I have the most fun finding awesome places to build cities. I'm like the TBS equivalent of an altaholic.
Japan has the most amazing unique ability ever. Just had a 1 HP scout take on a 7 HP brute, aww yeah. In the combat animation, that one bastard scout just fucking killed them all.
Here's the second part of my short, semi-AAR story. If you've missed the first part it's on page 34.
The anti-Arabian alliance: 100 AD
As Harun al-Rashid's horde of horsemen devastated the French civilization, the empires of the world grew wary of the once-peaceful Arabic people. It was decided that despite the long years of peace the world has knew, that the Arabs were a threat to stability. Darius I of the Persians, Bismark of the Germans, and Ramkhamheang of Siam joined together in a pact to remove the Arabian threat.
The 3 leaders knew they could get the support of other civilizations if they could get the Arabs to attack them first, and so Darius devised a plan, he would send his forces quickly and expand towards the lands which once belonged to France, and would announce the construction of two cities in an attempt to separate the Arabs from their newly conquered city of Paris. This achieved another goal of separating the Arab forces in Paris from the main empire, Harun al-Rashid knew he had to act, and so he declared war on Darius I of Persia in what seemed as an act of pure aggression.
Bismark and Ramkhamheang quickly joined in the war for Darius' favor as was planned, and Washington of the Americans also joined the anti-Arab alliance, now known as the AAA.
Harun's advantage lied in quick maneuvers and reinforcements, thanks to his horsemen's speed. He quickly managed to take Tarsus and Sardis from the Persians.

[IMG_thumb]http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4169/46213962.jpg[/IMG_thumb]
However, the main AAA force arrived from the north and managed occupy Paris. It seems that Ramkhamheang was not interested in liberating the French, but rather assert his supremacy and de-moralize the Arab forces. Harun didn't give up, pushed on and managed to recover Paris, but he had to defend it against the combined forces of Persia, Siam and Germany. The battles across the French plains lasted for half a millenia, and the war was known across the lands as "the war of Paris". During the war new weapons and tactics had developed, the Persian immortals at first were deadly against the Arabian horsemen, but then Arabians developed iron tools and equipped their warriors with armor and swords, which had the advantage in hand-to-hand combat against the immortals.
The Persians then developed the crossbow, a deadly weapon which could fire arrows in rapid succession. The Arabs were almost overwhelmed, until their wise leader appointed a great general, El Cid, to command the troops. El Cid who grew up in the outskirts of Mecca, has been using camels for all of his life. He ordered several horsemen to use camels instead of horses, and these proved to work wonders in the desert surrounding Paris.
It seemed that the Arabs managed to push back the invading AAA forces, despite numerical disadvantage. Darius who has already lost two cities was quick to surrender to Harun, and so did Bismark who was now the closest enemy. Harun was now facing the Americans who did not help the war effort at all, and the Siamese who were thought to be not only the strongest civilization in the world, but the most cultured and advanced as well. Still, Harun trusted in El Cid and his tactics, and ordered his forces to advance north across the desert and into the unknown lands of Siam.
El Cid returned 500 years later to Arabia as a hero, he managed to conquer two border cities of the Siamese, despite the enemy's numerical and technological advantage. The Arabian warriors told of the Siamese's tactics: They trained their troops to use extremely long spears known as pikes, these troops were able to defeat even the mightiest of the Arab's camel riders. But with elite tactics and quick maneuvers, the Arab camel riders managed to defeat them and conquer the cities of Uttaradit and Vientaine.

Harun then managed to strike a peace deal with the Siamese, and as an act of good will opened the borders of the two civilizations for trade and passage.
The Americans were backstabbed by the Germans and were quickly conquered, and thus were of no threat at all to the Arabians. Now the time is 1570 AD, the end of the Middle ages, so called for the stop of technological advancements due to the long and bitter war. The Arabs now seek to expand their borders and discover new riches in the lands recently discovered by the brave explorers of the world.

OK, this covers most of what happened until where I am, so now I can report as I play and it'll be a real AAR, with more screenshots of really cool things since I can take them as they happen, and hopefully feedback from you guys on how to improve it. Next part will either be in a few hours or tomorrow, depends on if I'll play today or not.
Slightly unrelated, but wasn't El Cid the guy who got his corpse stuck on his horse when he died the eve before battle and scared the shit out of the enemy?
Multiplayer really is unplayable... i tried it again and the "Next turn" button got stuck and we all had to quit. :colbert:
where are the fucking patches ?
rationalism is fucking awesome
Yeah it definitely is, I have around 800 science per turn now thanks to it (I also have around 38 cities, which might help).

I estimate all of the German empire will be consumed by Gandhi in the next 10 turns.

Just continue to build up forces. Do you have any field in which you are superior to them? Culture, technology, etc?
If they're playing really aggressively I'm sure other civs will have no problem signing pacts of secrecy against them, if you can get chivalry then you can sign defensive pacts with the Americans maybe?

I'm the most advanced in technology. America is my only ally, they're constantly under attack from everyone and are losing/regaining cities every few turns.
Everyone apart from America hates me because defending myself pissed them all off. Holding my territory just about because of the in own boundary bonuses. Was fighting on 3 fronts but I took 2 Indian cities and gifted them to America so Gandhi has to work harder to get to my side.
Going to try send the bulk of my army into the Arabian land as it looks to be the safer option right now.

If you can, go for the rationalism tree and the second policy on the tree in the left (+2 science per trading post). That saved me from a probable defeat, as the huge boost to science gave me a big edge over the Persians (which were huge) and not only allowed me to overcome them, but to steamroll them too.

Yeah I got that, getting 600 science with my small amount of cities.
Game is currently in modern era.
If you have technologically superior troops don't be afraid to use them even if Gandhi has more numbers. Usually in civilization games quality>quantity and this is especially true in ciV because usually big numbers don't mean a lot due to the 1upt rule. You could try to raze a few of Gandhi's cities if you can't afford to keep them and this will damage him greatly.
Also nukes. Lots of nukes.
The year is 2053, prince difficulty, time victory is off.
China and I each own half our continent. However, While I have just discovered atomic theory, have really shitty production, and happiness approaching zero, China is running the continent with mechanized infantry and helicopters. Russia is the same, except they own their entire continent, having defeated Gandhi long ago and having reduced Araba to one city on an island in the middle of the ocean.
Relations with China have been good since the dawn of time, we've been allies and such throughout history and have defeated the Ottoman Empire as allies. Following that victory, however, China proceeded to conquer the Siamese and the Egyptians, as well as all five city states on our continent.
Both China and Russia are asking me to support them against the other. I'm fearful for the future.
Well, Russia ended up winning a cultural victory. That was boring.

It is actually very playable, in multiplayer it just doesn't always tell you when a unit still needs moving so look for units that haven't used their moves yet.
Slightly unrelated, but wasn't El Cid the guy who got his corpse stuck on his horse when he died the eve before battle and scared the shit out of the enemy?
Yes your correct, they also used that for inspiration to his troops.
Turn 550 and the game crashes if I attempt to move 1 helicopter. :saddowns:
Turn 550 and the game crashes if I attempt to move 1 helicopter. :saddowns:
Turn 540 was the farthest I was able to get on my biggest match. 12 Civs and 20 States on a huge earth map. Each turn took around 30 seconds or above. It would crash halfway through computing turn 541 every time.
I got 18 Civs on a HUGE Archipelago type of map, Only just entering the Industrialized Era
I like that one diplomacy window though. "We seek knowledge with others through peace" He says, but he's got a Bastard sword slung over his shoulder with a backdrop of Hell and Destruction. He also has a beard. Can't be trusted
He also has a beard. Can't be trusted
What's a beard have to do with being able to trust people?
I could never really get into Civ. Not my type of game, I don't have a strategic mind.
