Yeah, that's the real problem with this game. In previous Civs, you could get an ally who'd be your bro 4 lyfe, but in CiV there's only two types of AIs : Those you're at war with, and those who hate you.
This really does suck. I don't think it's right that when you meet a new Civilization, there's tension right from the start because you know you will go to war eventually, it's just a question of when.
They should really fix the Civilization, Diplomacy was always an important factor in the series. With the new installement, the options are limited and everyone hates you, an alliance means jack shit.
It would only work if everyone playing was a person.
Eh, too bad AI really doesn't know how to do naval combat or naval-anything at all. If you play archipelago then you could litterally sit on your little island the entire time and consistantly win just by doing that.
i've had another AI launch a massive naval invasion against me on archipelago so it can happen the AI really doesn't like building air units I haven't seen a single enemy plane
Woah, I never liked the previous games for some reason, but I decided to download Civ5 demo just for fun. Hell, I played it like an hour... Only hour because of 100 turns limit :buddy: I HAVE to get this.
but STAY in an Era, not research beyond it.
There's a mod for that.
Well, the earth is raather large and realistically speaking taking years to cross the world is pretty realistic. Roads are pretty much the only way to speed up travel. If you play as Iroquois they can use forests as if they were roads. Units like Chariot Archer have HUGE move distances but they are only really effective on flat ground. Once you research machinery (I think it's fairly early game tech, unlocks crossbowmen), your units travel along roads faster. Bad thing is roads generally take a bit of time to build unless you have lots of workers (which are expensive to upkeep). Getting the Great Pyramids wonder ASAP is a very good thing to shoot for, since it genreally unlocks required tech anyways, and it's bonus of increasing worker speed by 50% is invaluble to building roads or any improvements. Don't go crazy on building roads though since each road tile is 1 gold maintance. this is a MASSIVE drain on your econ if you have a lot of roads. I tend to spend my science on tech that I'll need ASAP. I.E. I'll go for callendar as soon as I can if I have things near my starting city that can use the plantation. If I am focusing on military I'll start going archery or iron working, then focus on culture tech for a bit, etc. And there is no real best civ, tho some suck more than others. Japanese Bushido is AMAZING if your are military focus (make it so units always do full damage even when they are damaged), Pesian get 50% longer golden ages which is great to have, etc. America generally haave shitty tech (minutemen can't travel on roads as a bug for example, and thier +1 sight/half price tile purchasing is okay at best).
Thanks for the tips :D I wonder what civ4 was like. This game is so obscure as is...
I just got the game and, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THIS IS THE BEST THING SINCE HL2.
I'm enjoying this game a lot but wow.. this game is really hard and I'm only playing on Prince difficulty. I wonder how many turns I'll last on Deity or whatever it is called.
Diety is meant for the best of the best. I've been playing CIV for more than 3 years and I never even won emperor, that's 2 levels below diety. I've heard that in ciV, diety AI can get the first few wonders done after 10 turns and get to the rennaisance in 50 turns, on quick speed.

The AI in this game can be so dumb :\. I am a tyrant for defending my ally cities apparently.
The AI in this game can be so dumb :\. I am a tyrant for defending my ally cities apparently.
Yeah, the AI can be very sensitive sometimes. I get called a warmonger for fighting a war that I didn't start. I get scolded for "picking on smaller countries" without even doing anything. All the more reason to wipe them off the face of the Earth I guess.
Arabia and India. Hate those countries! Washington of The United States declared a war on me and I asked for help from these two countries. No help came and everyone else had an army that could destroy my nation. Then suddenly, all the city states and they declare war on them. What the hell? Well we won the war and I gained all the cities and wonders that USA had. Money poured in from everywhere and new luxury recources made me the world leader. I owned like, half of the world, or so I thought. Then suddenly, Greece declared a war on me too. Pissed me off. Again the same situation: no help came, but in a few rounds Arabia and Gandhi's India declared a war on Greece. I was about to invade their last town: the capital, but suddenly India and Arabia declare a war ON ME. So I made peace with Greece and concentrated on developing new troops. India wasn't a big threat for me, but Arabia was on a whole different level when it came to military power. So Arabia captures the towns that USA owned before I captured them and after that I was able to make peace with Arabia, but they didn't demand anything from me! Did they just simply want those former USA cities? India was a fool: after a few rounds of attacking I rushed to Delhi and was able to capture it and make peace with Gandhi: stupid fool started a war for no apparent reason. He gave me some of his own cities, plus some of the former cities capture in the war against USA. I lost the game. Arabia had captured the whole area of Europe AND Africa. On top of that, USA that I had formely owned had spreaded all over the old USSR area. I gave up around 2020 AD, build as many forces as possible and attacked Arabia. Other leaders called me a tyrant, but let's face it: these guys declared a war on me first! I was bankrupt and so, I had to give everything I had INCLUDING the colonial states I had in South America. This was on easy difficulty and the lenght was chosen to be short. Still it took me like 7 hours to make it through the game. I don't have the power right now the make any new civilizations.

So are the developers planning on fixing the AI even the slightest? Reading all these comments just makes me feel less enthusiastic about the game and it makes it a more of a bore to play it because you know the AI is sort of broken.

They definitely aren't the best, but they're not bad enough to wreck the game IMO.
Well, yeah, I suppose. Nothing is ever perfect anyway.
Japan and Russia are pretty fucking awesome imo, with japan your armies are pretty much invincible with Bushido + autocracy, and with Russia you can get quadruple uranium, very useful to build a large nuclear arsenal when you don't have much uranium available on your lands. Next country I'm going to try is India, unhappiness from population halved seems like a great option/whatever. I like huge cities.

I downloaded the demo for this game a couple days ago and finally got around to playing it. SO ADDICTING. I mean you keep settling and building and.. everything. Should I get this over MoH, Fallout NV, and any other game this month?
Next country I'm going to try is India, unhappiness from population halved seems like a great option/whatever. god damn.. i paid 50$ for 5 hours of play time apparently, i bought the game and played it for a few days and then suddenly it decided to not work anymore so i uninstalled it and now when i try to install it again it says this game isnt available. i want a refund
you know restarting steam generally fixes that
ive tried that alot of times
Also, when I tried the demo the first time, I got deep into a game, and then the whole game just started lagging like shit. Textures wouldn't load and the mouse delay was horrendous. So I started a new game after rebooting the computer and it worked perfectly smooth for atleast 3 hours. Any explanation?
