I generally get maybe 3 or 4 cities. By then the other nations are generally expanding right at my borders(I play on 8 player mode). I take one of them out relatively early after I go straight for sword tech, and maybe annex 1-2 of their cities depending on happiness, puppet ones with extra luxury resources, and raze the useless ones. That'll leave me around 9-10 cities because on Emperor difficulty they expand fucking fast. On the lower difficulties its possible to play with few cities, but once you start moving up, the AI gets handicaps to help their play which means their army can get out of control if you don't keep them in check. So you pretty much need a lot of cities to sustain yourself. On my current game, I probably have 10 cities under direct control and at least 11 puppets. I honestly stopped counting.
I've got 4 times the score of the man in 2nd place.
Yeah. I honestly don't know how they expect that to be possible via social/diplomatic methods without making your civ a cancerous tumor to the world.
Set Up Game->Advanced Setup->You can choose which victories to allow.

Yeah, turn it off when you set up a game.
Christ I'm a stupid fuck, need to pay more attention.
Can anyone give me a legitimate reason why I shouldn't be an expansionist asshole? While I usually have at least 7 cities after a little bit, every AI is just making their second or third one. I know culture advancements slow down and happiness decreases from too many cities but science, resources, military production capacity and empire power in general increase by a huge amount. Why would anyone not want to get more cities?
Oh boy, my last game was quite hilarious in that regard. Suleiman had settled on about 80% of the map, he had like 9 cities or something. He had completely surrounded my borders. And then he keeps complaining about my military being near his borders. [editline]28th October 2010[/editline] Ooookay, just started a new game with Napoleon again. I hit the classical era. I finish a research agreement with Genghis 2 turns later and instantly hit the medieval era. It's now 650 AD, about 800 years since I entered the renaissance era.
You know, the emperor AI difficulty might actually stand a chance of beating me if they were smart enough to build ANY anti air units. The fact is, most of my strategy revolves around taking any units they have to half with bombers before they can even get in range to assault me. And wow, each turn takes forever when you're waging a war against another super power that controls the other entire continent like I control mine.
Damn, this game is fun, and I got new sennheiser headphones, so whenever a destroyer shoots a missile at a city/vice versa, it sounds real. sometimes, depending on the amount of attention I'm paying, I actually flinch. [editline]30th October 2010[/editline] what're you guys tactics for taking down cities? I usually bomb them with some destroyers out of range of the cities projectiles, then, when I can take the city down with minimal casualties I send in a Modern Armor or some Gunships. Maybe a death robot. [editline]30th October 2010[/editline] what're you guys tactics for taking down cities? Okay, peculiar game here. I'm playing as Askia against Washington, Bismarck and Hiawatha.I settle two more cities before Washington declares war on me. I fend off his units and capture one of his cities. As I approach another one, he asks for a peace treaty and a whole load of shit from me. I say 'oh no, that ain't gonna fly' and capture a second city. He then promptly makes peace, gives me resources and about 4-5 cities. Getting them under control took some time but it's fun. Less amusing was when Bismarck declared war on me. First he amasses enough units to annihilate me outside one of my cities when suddenly he asks for peace. I go and train some units and he declares war AGAIN. So far we're still at war and he's taken one of my cities. Here's hoping the stubborn old coot will want to make peace.
I laugh when they offer a treaty which also asks for practically all of my resources and gold. Like I'll agree to that.
I have a hard time getting the feel of these Civ games. I got Civ 4, and I have Civ 5, and I see how they're all super-addictive, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around everything that's happening at once during a game. I feel like I'm constantly trying to do a million things at once, and I'll forget about one thing in order to pursue something else, and half the time whenever I pick a new research project/unit/building to work on, I don't particularly have a mind for why I'm picking what I'm picking. I'll keep at it though... There's just SO MUCH going on all over the place in every turn.
Sorry for bumping this, but this thread is too good to let die and it's better than to make a new thread about it. So I've started playing with mods that fix a lot of issues (one gives farms an extra production, another one makes it so that cities that convert production to gold get the same amount of money as they would if they spam scouts and sell them) and holy shit this game is fun. The only thing that might be better is if the AI would be better. Playing as France, I started on a medium-sized island with Ghandi. After some peaceful expansion, one of us had to go. Then, Darius declared war on the city-state of Florence which was my bitch and I invaded Brussels on another island because that was his bitch. I took it over, and then took Darius' settlement to the south. After that, I started a huge invasion of the island with Persepolis, and after taking down half of Persia, I reached the point where I got the Foreign Legion. It was glorious. I took down Persia and immediately declared war on Siam because the Japanese asked me to. After a bloody war for one of their cities which took half a century, the Japanese backstabbed me and invaded near Brussels. As of now, I've just barely held back their attack with two squads of Foreign Legion and Brussels' defences, and thanks to my newly invented tanks, I've managed to break through the grindhouse that is Siam and blitzed my way through. So, in short: the game has its flaws, but with some mod fixing, it actually becomes really fucking fun.
Got this game off D2D and it's the most boring game I've ever played, what is the appeal? I played the tutorial and all I could do was send a unit to a new tile, click next turn, and repeat. ....What the hell? Is this what the game is supposed to be like?! When do I get to lead armies to Ghandi's place? Or take over America? (bumped because I'm not making a new thread when one exists)

Get checked for ADD or something.
I just don't find the appeal in clicking the same "next turn" over and over and making no visible progress, even though the trailers made this look amazingly fun. Get checked for mental retardation or something, since you didn't offer any advice on how to improve the gameplay. It looks fun with all the little characters you talk too but it's just so damn boring.
Hey I need Fp's oppinion on something. I want to get back into civilization, I loved the hell out of civ 4. However I'm unsure if I should buy CIV4:beyond the sword and play CIV 4 again or go for CIV 5. Which is better?

i cant believe the civ 5 team had the nerve to charge us for shitty maps instead of bundling it with the next free update i mean i bought civ 5 after i saw they were updating it with new leaders
The satisfaction you get from the game comes from reaching long term goals, like finally researching gunpowder and using it to fuck Ghandi's shit.
I just don't see how you can enjoy maneuvering tons of tiny soldiers in an annoying turn system through unknown territory for half an hour. I guess it's just the beggining of the game being slow. I'll try it later.
half the fun comes from playing with friends

In that amount of time you can get a few cities, a small army and some scouts. After that 100-turn mark it just gets better and better, which I think is what sucks most people in. Civ 5 has no stacks of doom, but simpler(and more plain) diplomacy. Overall it depends on whether you prefer more interesting diplomacy or less stalemated warfare.
I picked up civ5 during the steam sale, was waiting for someone else to bump this thread. This game is great. Some pretty wild and crazy mods out there now as well.
At first I thought the same as you. But afterwards I realized the game is pretty monotonous, the variety and ways you can play are pretty limited unlike all the prequels, it's always about combat and war. Diplomacy, trade and Empire managing are really boring and uninteresting. And that is a point which made the Civ Series so great.
Yeah Civ 5 definitely needs some beefing up in all the areas aside from combat. It's a brilliantly fun game with friends, but it's very limited in scope while playing alone.
Got this for christmas, whoo!
I can't get past the menu for the demo. I can run crysis but can't run Civ5 seriously WTF?
Ramesses asked me to declare war on Elizabeth with him, and next turn denounced me for being "a warmongering menace to the world." :(
Fun fact: There are only 5 positive AI modifiers in regards to diplomacy, and there are like 17 negative ones, which explains why the AI hates you for doing anything
Fun fact: There are only 5 positive AI modifiers in regards to diplomacy, and there are like 17 negative ones, which explains why the AI hates you for doing anything
What are they?
I made a plantation and got denounced. That's one of them I think..
yea they hate slavery no doubt
I seriously hate one thing for certain. I'm hitting it up with Mongolia, being friendly, open borders, trades, research agreements, etc. Then out of the blue he denounces me and becomes super hostile. Oh yeah ok, real diplomacy there fuck face. Of course I just steam-rolled north with my army, but seriously what the fuck.
Is that spain/inca dlc worth it?
Oh man I am so good at this game, but some times things don't go my way... It started like an other game. I had city states turned on for some ungodly reason, but I was doing fine. I had about 6 cities and had just taken over one of China's before the surrendered to me and Egypt. I have some Long swordsmen and just finished researching Rifling, trained up some Minute men but then.... Shit hit the fan. So my "buddy" egypt called me up and said "I think your land would be nice under my control" I pass it off as a threat at first but then "Egypt has declared war on you!" "Oh. Shit." I think to my self, in this game Egypt had about 10 or 11 cities and a massive army compared to mine. And a horde of Swordsmen, chariots, archers, and riflemen came storming over the border (he is right above me). Things are fine for a few turns I hold my ground but then. "Arabia has declared war on you!" With Arabia just south of me I start to freak out. By now I have no allies and Egypt and Arabia seem to be working together, also they have 3 city states fighting me to. With no army to fend the south I start to train a city founder colonist group. Made up of 2 minutemen, a colonist, a builder and a long swordsman I pulled back from the death trap up north. The cities started to drop like flys but I got my group out over a lake just in time. A dozen turns pass and I set up camp next to my buddy Persia, I slowly to to get to astronomy so I can sail across the ocean. I have seen the damage done, but a few survivors remain. Some scouts up north who I left up there to be safe. And a single squad of minutemen, refugees from Philadelphia. The Minutemen are in a tough spot, the only way to meet up with the other survivors is to fight through a city state and then cross a huge desert owned by Arabia. After much fighting and close calls later, my Minutemen Arrive at the city I set up. I see that astronomy is about 12 turns from completion, but then even more shit hits the fan. Persia turns on me, Egypt must have bribed him to try and kill me or some thing because then I see Egyptian riflemen mobilizing to my city along with Arabian soldiers. I hold my ground for a few more turns, and then ASTRONOMY! I quickly get my group into the water and sail off, In the end I got 2 minutemen, a colonist, and a scout team. My 3rd minuteman squad died defending the refugee city and my long swordsmen died trying to sail away. I think all is not lost, I arrive at the new world! And am meeted by two peaceful civilizations, Gandhi and Montazuma, I quickly get open boarders with both and am one turn from setting up my city. But then, my last city is captured by Arabia. And I lost, my civilization fell apart. Best fucking game ever made.
