I don't have a problem with TF2 being free, I just think it was stupid of Valve to give everyone a hat. It just seems like Valve said: "Well, I bet some TF2 players will be angry about this decision, let's just give everybody a hat and they'll stop complaining." I mean, haven't they learned from the Gibus that giving everyone the same hat is stupid?
It'd been cool if they gave everyone some metal, so we could either craft a hat if we wanted or craft some of the new weapons.

Premium is regular TF2. Everyone who bought it, has it by default. The free version has restrictions on items.

I think the developers at Valve that work on TF2 are like model railroaders: at first, they made the whole rail line and everything, then they started to get obsessed with the little tiny details because they were having fun making little trinkets for their creations. I really do love the way Valve is handling the free accounts.
It does annoy me a tad how someone could have all the privaledges as someone who payed $20 for the game just by buying a $0.49 item from the Mann Co. Store, but it's not that big of a deal.
Personally, instead of this hat, which I most likely will not wear, prefering my currently owned hats, a coupon to use in the Mann Co. Store. The coupon could be worth about $10. But that's just me.

I got TF2 on the Orange Box when it was on sale for $10 so I figure I didn't really pay that much for such a great experience. I'm not unhappy with Valve.

I find it funny you're all upset about TF2 being free to play. TF2 has been cheap for so long (not including the amount of times they've dropped the price to under $5) that the game may as well be F2P. Extending on that you all go "HURR THE AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE WILL BE LOWER NOW". No, the intelligence in TF2 is already at an all time low and you're already there. Valve has given you free maps, weapons, "Meet the..." trailers, and hats (despite what you think about them, they started off pretty nice. Really, they're only ruined by the morons who take them so seriously).
Valve are simply trying out a new business model, and they can support it through the Mann-Co. Store and Steam.
If anything, they're doing a good by giving it to people who cannot afford it. (Yes I realise they're a business sush.)
You simply feel that because you spent money on the game that you deserve to be treated better. You spent your money, no one could have predicted at the time that Valve would do this. Just make your peace with it.
Also Mic-Spammers can be muted through the game I hope you do realise that.
