You paid to play the game years before anybody else could touch it for free permanently.
$20 is a stretch, Orange Box hung around $30 or so total, and tf2 itself has gone on sale multiple times, for as low as $2.50
I paid 20 bucks for TF2 and I have clocked in about 600 hours as of today, and I expect to keep playing. I have absolutely no qualms with TF2 becoming F2P, I don't see what the big problem is.

I've had this game since the Beta, full price, 50$ dollars [sp]but it was the orange box so really tf2 was individually 20$[/sp], and I honestly don't mind. The game's already given my worth back numerous times with my 768 hours of playtime.
Though it is a bit unfair to the people who bought it right before it went F2P, but then it was only 10-20$.

I don't know if its more aggravating about new players invading multiple servers from veterans, or the fact that its now better that they have a lot more easier kills for noob busting. Someone told me that freeloaders can not trade with me completely. Well, I don't see how they could either, because I am sure there are a number of those not old enough for a credit card who probably do not buy from Mann Co.
I wouldn't give a fuck, even if the whole "Premium" thing wasn't even there. People can play it for free now, but I was able to play it 3 years ago and was able to play the game as it evolved, I think that's more than enough compensation for $20.

As others have said, you got free updates, and played this game for a long, long time before it became free to pay. Have you ever bought something from the manco store? I got the game, plus Gmod, a month ago for ten bucks. While yes it was cheap, I still shelled out the money for it.
It's free? Good. I have friends that won't buy it. Now, they'll actually play it.
In all honesty, I don't see anything bad in this. More people can play an awesome game? Sweet. More newbies playing? I get to try some Spy tricks I never had a chance to before. All this, plus even more free updates? Nice.
And, if your mad about this just because of mic spammers? Mute it. Lower your sound. Play a different server. Whatever. Just stop complaining. All of you. It's a freaking game, for Christ' sake! There are much more important things to worry about. So, grow up.

What I think is happening is that we're so spoiled with all these free updates, essential DLC, and basically things that they could charge for, for free that some of us have felt entitled to get these things.
Look at the developers coming these days. Treyarch used to give PC players the DLC for free, yet now we have to pay. Same for Infinity Ward. We have a dedicated gaming company that wants to give PC players the most and we bitch about it? Sounds ungrateful.
The F2P update is the best thing to happen to TF2. I am now a veritable god on all the matchmade servers because nobody knows how to counter a Dead Ringer spy or a sniper who doesn't stand still.
By the way, who the hell was afraid of hackers? It's been 3 days already and I haven't seen ANY hacker so far.

I don't have that problem because they way I see it they still have to pay. The people that didn't buy the game aren't going to now even if it's a single dollar. It's as if Valve had the game on sale for a dollar now. Think of it as natural depreciation and some Steam sale.

As for the being F2p, well, im not complaining, atleast I can gather around with my friends now :v:. Also, this introduces more people to the game, and they said they're working on erasing griefers, so everything's ok. The main concern for me now is that servers are barely stable, especially Vac servers - You get "disconnected" from VAC servers and it makes you disconnect off vac servers.
