Its been stated that DX1 characters won't show in DE:HR. You'll hear/see references, but not see them. Unless Eidos decided against their statement.
There's an extra mission in the Augmented Edition called "Tong's Rescue" so I assume you're gonna see him

Oh my. This is news to me.
Pussycats. 250.

Then I should probably go for the AE and pay the extra price :ohdear:
I'm getting the AE because I'm hoping you can punch Tong in the mouth at some point
Fuck him and his dark age

You have no idea.
cause a paradox
You [Vaught] have no idea.
Indeed, there are several characters in the leak and The Icarus Effect hinted at who could possibly make an appearance.

Wrong. [sp]Bob Page[/sp] appears in the opening cutscene for christ's sake.

You poor thing.
[sp]Is Page still a part of the Illuminati in this one?[/sp]

[sp]Yup and they're stronger than ever.[/sp]
Don't hate me, but after playing the Human Revolution leak I finally decided to actually TRY playing Deus Ex for the first time. Again, don't hate me but does it get better after the first mission? Because I just sort of stumbled my way up the tower and failing every attempt at stealth take downs ever (pretty much resorted to trying to shoot a guy in the head with the minicrossbow or knocking them out with a baton before them freaking out and forcing me to just shoot them with a pistol), and still got commended for how sneaky I was. Really, don't hate me, but it just seems really clunky to me so far.
That's just the first level, the first time I played the game I pretty much had the same results as you.
My first time I had no idea where to go and wandered around for ten minutes before piling up some boxes to get into the statue and getting killed in a matter of seconds by three NSF guys

Then I uninstalled the game

Oh good, that wasn't just me then. Though the only time I died (countless times) was near the top of the tower where I tried to pepper gas two NSF guys and they kept killing me over and over again. Otherwise it was a lot of people looking directly at me from 5 feet away and saying, "I think I heard something..."
First time I played it, crawled up the back of the statue and some fool shot a TNT box. Uninstall.
Try 2: Get to Hong Kong, love game forever.

I went back to it in the mindset that I would try until I got past the first level then carried on from there. I've beaten it countless times on hard now. It's a really easy game once you get used to it.
Eh, I guess it's just as well that the game gets infinitely better on the second mission. Same goes for Human Revolution so maybe it was some sort of deep meta reference to make the first mission awkward and frustrating.
My first time revolved around me continuously running into the gas-grenade doors a the top as I'd forgotten I could disarm them. Fun.

MEESTA JAY SEE DENTAN. IN DA FRESH. :3:
Deus Ex is odd like that; it seems really clunky and obtuse until you get the hang of how everything works, and then everything suddenly fits together and it turns into the best game ever made. The trick is to stick with it and experiment; try distracting people by throwing things (throwing knives are a personal favorite, but they don't appear until later) or setting traps with LAMs or TNT crates.
You will be working with AGENT O-RANGE
But my job is to find information about information about information about information about information about information about information about information about information about information about information about info- *blows up*

I'd say its a marmite game but people who actually try pushing into it do like it a lot.

Dark Age is the most reasonable ending. :frogc00l:
Damn automerge.
Dark Age is a dumb ending.
Helios > Illuminati > Dark Age
So guys, the first time did you pick Ranged or Close?
I'm going to do a no-deaths playthrough on hard. If I die, I'll start over again.

No saving either, unless it's to quit.

at least you made it quite further
I just fought [sp]Barrett[/sp] in normal difficulty as a stealth character and honestly, It wasn't that hard: the trick is realizing that you can hide from him, and he will not know where you are. I started the fight by throwing 2 remote detonated explosives, then I activated the cloak and got behind cover, away from him, and hid. Then i just shot him a few times, and cloaked again, so on. He dropped after a few headshots.

Sniper, hardest, headshots aren't quite enough, if I remember correctly.

You could also just throw barrels at him.
