Despite how I sound in the OP I don't want this to be a console war or "hurr pc is better" thread. Please read this PSN IS SLOWLY RETURNING, ONLINE SERVICES/FRIENDS/TROPHIES AND EVERYTHING ELSE HAS COME BACK UP EXCEPT FOR THE PSN STORE! YOU WILL GET; 2 GAMES ON THE PS3, 2 ON PSP IF YOU LIVE IN EUROPE. YOU WILL GET A COUPLE GAMES FOR BOTH SYSTEMS AND PSN PLUS IN THE US IF THINGS HAVEN'T CHANGED What's going on Starting last week the PSN seemed to randomly go down, no reason was given and it was just assumed to be work on the network, after a day of being down Sony released info saying it's a internal error, and that it'll be back up shortly. A few days later sony admitted that whatever was going on is a external problem, one caused by hackers or some malicious source, no data outside this was given with a assured "Well, nothing bad will come from this no worries" on 4/24 Kotaku.com reports that there's a large chance of credit card information being taken, Sony shamefully admits that they have no way of finding out at this time and is just "hoping for the best" strategy. 4/26 Sony reveals your home, phone, zip code, everything has been stolen, and whoever cracked it has access to literally everything. Only saying "be careful!" in response As time went on hackers have released the info they taken, Sony has been freaking out trying to rebuild as fast as possible and everything is a goddamn mess. What Sony is doing about it Sony is currently ripping PSN down, tearing it to bits and tossing it in the trash, and in return rebuilding the entire network to protect it better, no estimated time on when this will be finished, but until then the downtime will continue. It is said it will be back up on May 3rd, BUT Nothing has returned today so who knows, just hope they hit the second date they set which is May 10th It's been announced they will not make the original May 10th release date. They have NOT given a new target date. Don't trust some random site as they know as much as we do. Update A official post says that it'll be back up in a couple days, or so they claim anyway http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/10/psn-restoration-timeline-update/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=psn_restoration_051011 4/26
Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We don’t have an exact date to share at this moment as to when we will have the services turned on, but are working day and night to ensure it is as quickly as possible. We are currently working to send the following message via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of this malicious attack on our servers, so please look for this information via email as well. Please note that we are as upset as you are regarding this attack and are going to proceed aggressively to track down those that are responsible. Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer, We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have: 1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services; 2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and 3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information. We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable. Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained. For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well. To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports. We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please check www.eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions. Sincerely, Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams Sony Network Entertainment Europe Limited (formerly known as PlayStation Network Europe Limited) is a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited the data controller for PlayStation Network/Qriocity personal data.
(Credit to finding this goes to ItchyBarracuda) Welp, this is a outrageous fuck up like no other. 4/27 http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/27/qa-1-for-playstation-network-and-qriocity-services/ Sony recently did a Q+A on the situation, it reads as follows;
Q: Are you working with law enforcement on this matter? A: Yes, we are currently working with law enforcement on this matter as well as a recognized technology security firm to conduct a complete investigation. This malicious attack against our system and against our customers is a criminal act and we are proceeding aggressively to find those responsible. Q: Was my personal data encrypted? A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack. Q: Was my credit card data taken? A: While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system. Q: What steps should I take at this point to help protect my personal data? A: For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. Q: What if I don’t know which credit card I’ve got attached to my PlayStation Network account? A: If you’ve added funds to your PlayStation Network wallet in the past, you should have received a confirmation email from “DoNotReply@ac.playstation.net” at the email address associated with your account. This email would have been sent to you immediately after you added the funds, and will contain the first 4 digits and last 4 digits of your credit card number. You can also check your previous credit card statements to determine which card was attached to your PlayStation Network or Qriocity accounts. Q: When or how can I change my PlayStation Network password? A: We are working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. We will provide more details about the new update shortly. Q: Have all PlayStation Network and Qriocity users been notified of the situation? A: In addition to alerting the media and posting information about it on this blog, we have also been sending emails directly to all 77 million registered accounts. It takes a bit of time to send that many emails, and recognize that not every email will still be active, but this process has been underway since yesterday. At this time, the majority of emails have been sent and we anticipate that all registered accounts will have received notifications by April 28th. Consumers may also visit www.us.playstation.com/support and www.qriocity.com for notices regarding this issue. In addition, we have taken steps to disseminate information regarding this issue to media outlets so that consumers are informed. Q: What steps is Sony taking to protect my personal data in the future? A: We’ve taken several immediate steps to add protections for your personal data. First, we temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and, second, we are enhancing security and strengthening our network infrastructure. Moving forward, we are initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway. We will provide additional information on these measures shortly. Q: Has Sony identified the party or parties responsible for the PlayStation Network hack and subsequent theft of personal information? A: We are currently conducting a thorough investigation of the situation and are working closely with a recognized technology security firm and law enforcement in order to find those responsible for this criminal act no matter where in the world they might be located. Q: When will the PlayStation Network and Qriocity be back online? A: Our employees have been working day and night to restore operations as quickly as possible, and we expect to have some services up and running within a week from yesterday. However, we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure.
4/28 Credit cards are almost 100% sure to have been safe, if your reporting otherwise you are full of shit till you can prove otherwise. Still a good idea to keep your eye on the accounts but should be safe regardless on that front and ONLY that front. PSN is scheduled to come back May 3rd and will be missing a few features, everything will be 100% back on the 10th. 5/1 THIS IS IMPORTANT Sony Admits the cards were stolen but claiming it was all outdated data so it should be alright. Don't buy it for a second, change your cards folks, safety first. 5/3 Despite Sony yelling that some services will return today, nothing happened and no further comment was given, ignore anyone who says there was a second attack, there wasn't. 5/5 People claiming to be the hackers announce they have the credit card details and all the info they could possibly get, and are ready to publish it sometime this weekend. Probably full of shit but who knows at this point. 5/6 Playstation Europe announce their welcome back package. Service is still offline. 5/7 Your information was published for all of 10 minutes. The hackers put up all the stolen info so people could snatch what they want, Sony quickly jumped at them and tore down the website. No idea if they're gonna be trying to put it up again later that day. Bunch of dumbasses. Sony also announced however that the PSN will NOT be up this weekend and apologizes for breaking the dateline they had originally set up. Get ready for the long haul folks. 5/11 http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/10/psn-restoration-timeline-update/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=psn_restoration_051011 Sony announces that it should be back up within the coming days
I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.
5/15 NETWORK CONNECTION IS BACK UP AND YOU CAN NOW DOWNLOAD A PATCH. PSN STORE IS STILL DOWN THOUGH. BE PATIENT AS SERVICES ARE BEING RETURNED What to do if you're a PS3 user It's a good idea to change all of your passwords for your email and whatever else you can think of. When you signed up for PSN if you linked it to your actual email the hackers now have it. If you are the type of person to use the same password for everything, they also have that and are able to take a shot at your accounts and get into whatever they want. Be wary of phishing emails, phone calls, or mail in general. The guys who broke in have everything so better safe then sorry. What are you going to get out of it? US Will be getting 30 days of free PSNPlus and Netflix (?Source on this?) and possibly looking into a few games for free for users. People already with PSN Plus get a free month. Europe PSN users will get to choose 2 games from 5 (unlisted so far) titles for free, and all PSP owners will get to choose 2 from a list of 4 games. This threads made to be a discussion on the ongoing outage and keep every PS3 owner up to date.
Sony did nothing wrong, move on.
I think they should give us something like some extra dosh in our ps store wallets but I know they won't do that.
Where is the source to the latest news exactly?
Wow whoever is doing it I'm sure is trying to be a noble internet hero or whatever, but stop that shit - I want to play online and it really isn't helping to prove your maturity.
pretty sure this is anon
Where is the source to the latest news exactly?
http://kotaku.com/#!5795349/sony-doesnt-know-yet-if-your-credit-card-number-was-stolen For the credit card quote
You got this all wrong .. They lost the harddisk containing your credit card information and personal data while "doing maintenance" - this is all just a sad coincidence. </sarcasm>
Wow whoever is doing it I'm sure is trying to be a noble internet hero or whatever, but stop that shit - I want to play online and it really isn't helping to prove your maturity.
i dunno if the noble internet hero is gonna steal credit card info
prepaid cards master race
I think they should give us something like some extra dosh in our ps store wallets but I know they won't do that.
1 item of your choice from the PS Store seems appropriate.
Sony is just secretly fixing everything without telling you guys shit. :smug:
I honestly think Sony derped really hard on this. As a collective whole, Anon is not saying they had anything to do with this. Anon, as intelligent as they are, want to seemingly make themselves look..."mature." As in, if they did something they'll own up. There are certain leaders of Anon, those who conduct interviews, those who do the hackings mostly, those who manage their Youtube and such, and since Anon isn't owning up, I think it was either Sony derping or some other outside source doing it.
they said they are rebuilding the whole psn from scratch? if im not mistaken.

From scratch of the last backup... Sony PSN twats cannot even program a light switch without backdor bugs.
Sony's got this stuff covered in their ToS. You'll get nothing.
Uh dude, anyone can claim to be anon and then leave whenever they want :v: So one group might be acting mature while a bunch of script kiddies hits them.
They just hacked a major network and you're calling them "script kiddies"? I think they are pretty good at what they are doing. [editline]25th April 2011[/editline] Not that I approve
Got to love how badly Sony has fucked up this year. Yeah, I own a PS3 and play it all the time, but even I admit this is just stupid. If it is an external attack, then the fact that it's been down for literally 6 goddamn days leads me to believe that this is mainly because someone or some people got butthurt about the whole George Hotz thing. Which only started because Sony ditched Other OS because they're insecure about anything that remotely resembles a hacking device. If it's actually an internal problem, then I laugh at Sony for trying not to "spoil their image", even though their image is "Company that tries to cash in on the success of others but fails miserably due to crap marketing and design decisions, and attempts to stop hacking but just makes it worse in the process". Although I doubt that's the issue if it's been down for this long. Again, I like the PS3 as a console, but this is just getting silly.
Only thing I'm annoyed about is that trophies don't synch.

[editline]25th April 2011[/editline] Not that I approve
For the most part, Anon "hacks" by just grouping up and going "hurr durr LOIC the fuk out of it we r legun". This on the other hand is a lot more carefully planned, and whoever did it would be taking credit for it somewhere, it was a big enough exploit to convince Sony to shut to network off while they fix it after all.
I wanna play my online gaems mang.
Perhaps they are adding steamworks to the PSN and had to take it down for the time? (iirc when Portal 2 was announced at E3 last year GabeN said that Steam(?) and steamworks are coming to the PS3)
http://kotaku.com/#!5795349/sony-doesnt-know-yet-if-your-credit-card-number-was-stolen For the credit card quote
Well fuck, might have to get a new card. And my dad, too.

(iirc when Portal 2 was announced at E3 last year GabeN said that Steam(?) and steamworks are coming to the PS3)
Nope, I think it's been confirmed that it's an outside attack, that's why they switched it off and are rebuilding it.
Perhaps they are adding steamworks to the PSN and had to take it down for the time? It surprised me that they were talking about it on the news on the radio (UK), videogames are very rarely mentioned apart from when a new call of duty comes out.
maybe they should stop being total assholes to people
maybe they should stop being total assholes to people
And maybe people should stop being total assholes :v: At this point, you can't take it both ways. Both sides acted irrationally and sporadically and are now flinging shit at each other like monkeys.
It surprised me that they were talking about it on the news on the radio (UK), videogames are very rarely mentioned apart from when a new call of duty comes out.
There was a mention some time last year related to GTA4 as a British part of R* had a huge part in that or something, and it has caused quite a few students to want to get into game design. Other than that, you hear nothing but controversy and bitching.
