When it gets covered on the NATIONAL NEWS it's a big deal and it makes the company look bad.

Someone could probably just as easily (well not easily, but if enough effort was put in) hack the Microsoft network and get Xbox details. It's about where someone is focused. Apparently hackers are focused on the PS3 recently.

But the point is that they haven't. They hacked Sony, and that makes Sony look bad.
Sony can't control the hackers, but they are doing a really bad job with damage control.
They should be getting PR people out there talking about how they are protecting data and bla bla bla bla, but instead they are staying tight-lipped and the news is saying a bunch of stuff that makes them look shitty.

They may not be able to get the system back online yet, but they could get a public relation team out there doing interviews talking about how Sony is protecting consumers or someshit. They've had a fucking hard month of nothing but bad PR, pretty much none of which they were responsible for. Maybe in a time of panic keeping tight lipped about the whole situation seemed like a much better idea. It's been literally attack after attack against sony because of what? Some random people couldn't install Linux on their PS3 anymore. That small minor group couldn't and it probably resulted in this which is stupid. So yeah Sony have acted badly but holy shit they are working through a tough time at the moment.

I still preferr the overall service, but so far, PS3 is beating us on downtime.
The security breach could be a problem though.

Figures were recently released by an independent source (from what I recall it was Game Informer) that less than 0.1% of the PS3 user base had ever even accessed the "Other OS" feature on their consoles, let alone knew it existed.
I think you should stop pretending to blow something out of proportion.
Do the math.
Roughly 50,000,000 PS3s sold worldwide. 10% of that is 5,000,000. 1% of that is 500,000. Which means that if it's 0.1%, a total of 50,000 people ever even used that Feature (ROUGH estimate, it's probably even less than that).
50,000 =/= 50,000,000 (not taking into account many consoles are used by multiple people within one household, making the total not using it even greater)

I know the removal of Linux capability was a bad move on their part, but nobody that I know has bought their PS3 just to put Linux on it

If they only used the Other OS feature they could just not update. Other OS was really a useless feature since you didn't have access to any of the hardware so the only cool part was the boot up and then it gets old quickly.
Well anyone who wants to use Linux now with full hardware support just needs to install a CFW but the fact that Sony removed a feature is really stupid.
