A Penta is luck because you have to be able to last hit 5 enemies in a relatively short amount of time. You really can't try for a penta kill because chances are you'll die. It just sort of comes to you if you're lucky.
For the record, I believe elementz got his first pentakill with Renekton about a week after he came out. Elementz, one of the best players in League, got his first pentakill more than a year after he started playing.
