I'm about 4 nights in. I built my base by outpost alpha so I could find it easily, and there was a nice flat sand drift there, too.
I lag a lot for some reason, only getting about 5-10 fps when my average on other maps is 70

Well, given the low amount of stone on the map, yes. Cobble generators at some point may even become a necessity.
As for those with lag issues, I am not sure why that is. It works fine for most people, so the problem may be corrupted chunks. To fix that you'd have to re-download.
As for your tree not dropping a sapling... you're pretty screwed...
Try to see how many days you can get on the wood of one tree. Or start over.

Using WorldEdit. There is a command (/replacenear Z X Y) that replaces all of X block with Y block within a radius of Z around you.
We replaced grass and dirt with sand and stone with sandstone.
I really liked how the watchtower led me to the gravesite, but from then on I just wandered around the map and eventually found the one chest that's rigged in that cave. Nothing else but sand from then on. It'd be a lot cooler if there were hints of paths or some kind of leading through the map.
Actually a very fun map... still playing!

Forgetting the bunker's dirt is fine, it just makes it trickier.
There is a place on the map where there is grass, and also some places with dirt in them.
As for your saplings... that is something we should probably find a way to fix. Maybe give 2 saplings at the start?

Add a couple secret saplings to the map, like in [sp]the chest with the bread, or at the TNT trap.[/sp]

IS there any way to get wool, for a bed in hardcore mode? I read that there is a secret piece of grass on the map.
