Just bought games 1-3 on ebay, new. I hope it was worth the $75 CAD I paid.
Seeya in a few years.
It's a amazing franchise and will prove it's worth it in about every way.

It's embarassing to play in front of other people, but otherwise it's the best turn-based strategy RPG ever.
I haven't played a Disgaea game yet, but I'm thinking about getting one...
...DOOD!
I remember I played Hour of Darkness a long time ago. It was fun. I wouldn't mind getting back in to this, but I lack a PS2.
It's still weird to me how I got into this game. I remember reading Game Informer when I was young (or whatever magazine it was back then) and remember seeing this ad for game I couldn't pronounce that had a giant laxative bottle with pictures and info about the it over the bottle. I asked to get it for my birthday and realized it was a really great game.
Anyone who's gotten lategame in disgaea 3 will figure out what I just did

Awful quality cellphone picture but still holy shit, I managed to beat baal last night, those unaware baal is disgaea's biggest time sink, level 4000 with stats that can only be compared to the picture I posted earlier. I totally got lucky but still.

Me and a friend play it together a lot and openly talk about it in public whenever it's on our mind :v:
We already went over this, it's not that bad.
The major thing gameplay-wise that deterred me while trying to play these games was how much time you had to spend EACH TURN to make sure you didn't get your ass kicked through your skull, unless you already ground your characters overleveled amounts beforehand, in which case the game gets kind of pointless because then you can just one-hit everything and take negligible damage.
What also bugged me is that "boss" fights usually happen with either you trying to do as much damage as you can to the boss each turn while it one-hits one or more of your characters per turn, and/or you just wipe out the boss in one or a few turns with massive damage. I like boss fights to have more strategy and uniqueness, kind of like the ones in ZHP (Zettai Hero Project, another NIS game).
I guess that's why I like ZHP a little more than the Disgaea series: everything happens action-by-action so you don't have to take forever planning to see the results of a turn, and the game has a little more "variety" gameplay-wise, like a bunch of terrain gimmicks, including hidden traps with various effects and icy floors (a la Pokemon), crumbling floors and even floating around hanging on to balloons!; as well as somewhat strategic boss fights (throw the boss' weapons back at it, attack the weak points to expose the main body, defend an ally while fighting the boss, etc).

[sp]Overlord Baal in the body of that red mushroom thing took all of those character's most treasured items to teach them a surprisingly deep lesson in life. Only time I think Baal has ever done any "good" in the games.[/sp]

[sp]It's heavily implied he really did steal everyones crap and just fled after shooting good will into the air. In Flonne's case though she never even had her DVD boxset stolen, she never even owned it. I ":I"'d so hard.[/sp]

Cannot wait for 4.
The farthest I've gotten in any of them is D1 though. And I'm not even in the 1000's... I usually just enjoy the main game and get overwhelmed by the rest.

Sums up how I felt, ignored the item world and the innocents for my entire run through of 1-2, now in DS and 3 using them, it's easy to get to level 1000 when you take the time to nab em'. Leveling 1 -> 2000 in a single attack is great
I friend owns 1-3 I played 3 I really enjoyed it, I might get 4
There is not one self-conscious person in the world who could play this in public, I mean goddamn. The amount of 'anime-ness' in this can choke a herd of large elephants.
Well duh it's anime styled, it's from japan, that's kind of their thing.
Seriously though if a bunch of anime characters with guns/swords etc shooting each other is a menace to the public opinion to you, you're kinda thinking to hard into it. Most I've ever gotten is.
"What game are you playing?"
"Disgaea DS"
"Oh what's it about?"
"Grid based combat."
"Oh wait so this is what that guy came from, the blue haired guy. Cool now I know"
Shrug :v:
