Well, to be honest, running a Multiworld with such varying quantities isn't going to be cheap, and looking at the financial situation it just isn't going to work out very well.
I say, use a unique game mode, i had an idea for a game mode where, you had two days to build normally, then after that 2 days, the water level rises 1 every 3 hours or so, eventually the map would be reset, but i dunno, that could be problematic.

Would a subscription based server/world be a stupid idea? Like 1 euro/dollar a month a person granting access.

Outside city/project limits, both of which any should be able to create. If I want to create a giant spherical home of wood, I don't really want someone going around and taking that wood/my tools from my chests.
Hey everyone, Im currently onvacation, fightin killer sharks saving the coral reef, you know the usual. Im glad you all have so many great ideas and as soon as I get home Inacio and I will be able to get the server going. In the meantime keep them coming. You guys have some great ideas!

My suggestion is turn off PVP, make everything similar to default mine-craft like rain, mobs etc and except maybe a few plug-ins like chest protection etc.
with PVP off I believe its more fun, like helping each other etc etc. Its a big world after all.
edit: On a server I been on, there somekind of shout plugin, would be useful for alot of players. Avoids cluttering up the chatbox.

Having PVP allows for more interesting co-operation and such. I'd like to see large team-built cities and bases develop as people work together.
In fact, faction-based warfare would be really cool, provided it was all informal/player-organised rather than being assigned a faction when you join.

Can be more interesting or can be not. Depends really on the playerbase.
For me I'll like to see exploring teams, long railways connecting outpost across the minecraft world, etc etc and it would get much more exciting with the adventure update coming. I see pvp pointles and there are much fun things other then pvp. You can have co-operation without pvp.
My suggestion is to come up with a list of Plugins, Rules and Ideas then PM the guy in charge.
The he/she will compile a list and we will all vote on our favorite rules, plugins, and ideas, rather than being all chaotic.
id rather have a simple survival sever with a few non-super game changing plug-ins,and i think stealing is a horrid idea,it just makes drama

Just putting my thoughts out there.
Now that I think of it, splitting the map would be a bad idea. One whole survival server would be the best.
I kinda want the server to be as close to vanilla as possible. A few server management mods at most.
I'd just like a simple survival server
I have an idea, make Survival. [b]SURVIVAL[/b]. Find the hardest map you can. See if you can find any mods to ramp up the difficulty tenfold. Make tree's, ores and anything useful rare. Make the night, or the dark pitch black, and something to be feared with every bone in your body. Force people, either underground or in huge castles, to work together to form one huge city. Make creepers explosions spew fire. Skeletons now have Double the health and double the damage. Zombies,more numerous then the stars in the sky. Spiders can leap ten blocks and climb over walls. Creepers can blast doors open. The tiniest dark space, even 1x2x1 can spawn, and harbor creepers, skeleton and zombies. Skeleton jockeys are 6x as common. Slimes kill with 2 hits, and are even more numerous then normal.Have creepers that can sense you hiding in your 1x2x1 hole, just like spiders, and blow the shit outta you. Wolves are always aggressive at night, and they can never be tamed, all the wolves hunting in packs. Pigs now only drop one pork at most. Every player starts with nothing.If killed, you start again with nothing, you can't even pick up you items. The only way to gather materials is to go out into the world, stumble upon chests, sometimes in craters or old, broken houses. With a 5% chance of a chest being placed in a chunk. These chests would hold wood, seeds, pork, bread, saddles, string, Arrows, slime balls, buckets, fishing rods and Maps of the surrounding area. Make survival survival, make every day you see the sun rise a wonder.
Due to the nature of this idea, every time the settlement dies, due to greifing or to the mobs overwhelming and killing it's inhabitants. You just load up a new map. Settlements could last days, hours, months even. Hell, if you want, i could load up a map and place all the chests and shit for you. I've got nothing but time. Then build a basic settlement. Then Chuck a chest with a few starting supplies in the middle. Oh yeah, and all ores are pretty rare, there's that. Beds also have nether settings, they explode when you try to sleep in them. Yeah, we'd need someone to code a mod for this, but it should be easy enough, tweak a few spawn rates, slightly change the spider speed and jump distance, edit spider climbing, probably the hardest part would be modifying the creepers AI, and making him spew fire when he explodes. All the chest shit can be done manually.
Keep it simple. Seriously. I looked forward to SMP so much when it was about to release, but by the time it was stable everyone had these dumb addons and shit that made me join the server and simply think "what the fuck is going on here" before leaving again. I checked out some servers yesterday and while impressed I still had no idea what I was doing.
OR the server, could have two major factions, e.g Red & Blue. The idea would be to have a clearly defined territory, and in that territory would be towns, villages, hamlets, cities and capitals. Iconomy and basic admin commands installed. When connecting for the first time, you mill around in the starting town until you get assigned to a faction, i.e blue. You then get taken via underground rail to your capital city. With a door impassable by members of Red, all the other blocks around it unable to be removed. Rail then goes to capital city, or spot of capital city. In the area surrounding the Capital is the cites that the people of each faction live in. No on lives in the capital, it populated by Npc's. Capital does contain the blacksmith NPC, who repairs items for a very small fee. There is also a trader who sells slimeballs, seeds, flint and steel and food.
Now for the PVP part
In the server, Stealing, and fighting is encouraged. Chests are not allowed to be hidden. Neither is greifing to a certain extent. E.G. lighting a wooden house on fire when you finish raiding is okay, but not destroying an area completely with TNT. The only reason for PVP, is of course, phat loot. But eventually, Phat loot won't be really needed, so i suggest some sort of point system when one system captures and Holds little tokens in the town square. Each Faction might get a certain number of tokens to use for villages, or maybe one per ten people or something. Once placed they can't be moved ect. Now, as players can't be online all the time, each town token has an area of influence Which is settable (To a certain point). The area of influence is where guard would kill opposing faction members on sight. Each token starts out with two guards, and requires 2 Diamonds for an extra guard to be added, with the total of 6 guards possible.
So yeah, good idea? I'm on a roll tonight, personally i like this idea better then the other one.

i like the idea of factions or guilds to allow a structured pvp
could always create "arenas" that only allow pvp if everyones too concerned
it all depends on who can be civilised and what occurs when someone finds a stash of treasure hidden by a few pannels
I say there should be areas where PvP should be allowed .Just giant arenas, and i mean giant, that are between towns,maybe they will have the fastest route to certin towns or good loot hidden in them

Okay everyone, I'm finally back from vacation. I saved some orphaned dolphins from evil Japanese poachers and in doing so got sunburned on 95% of my body.
So far the only thing I think we can all agree on is that we want it to be survival and we don't want a bunch of addons.
So heres my idea as far as the server.
Economy:
We will not be using any economy plugins. They're too messy and often not worth it, Inacio and I have both agreed on this. The economy for the server will be completely trade and barter based with no set values for anything. This way players can haggle and trade for whatever they want in the town marketplaces without any issues or over complications.
PVP:
As far as PVP is concerned the idea I've heard the most is that pvp should be disabled in towns and enabled in unsettled areas. I agree with this idea, so basically towns will be treated as "Safe Zones".
Towns:
Towns will be safe areas for all players to rest and or trade. Mobs will not spawn in towns and PVP will be disabled. The server will start out with one town at spawn in a desert area. This will encourage players to move away from the spawn in order to gather supplies and settle. Players will be allowed to join together to build their own towns. In order for player-made towns to be qualified as safe zones it will have to meet certain requirements which will be determined later. Once a town has been qualified as a "safe zone" any additions to it wont be protected from griefing, mobs and PVP. This will encourage players to continue exploring once a town is finished.
Mobs:
Mobs will be enabled and treated normally, except for creepers which will be nerfed to keep from damaging buildings.
Plugins:
As far as plugins we want to keep things light. So far we think we'll likely need some sort of zone protection plugin for towns to work, some sort of creeper nerf plugin and a chest locking plugin.
Everything here is just a basic idea and subject to change. If you have suggestions for rules and plugins we should use or would like to help us out, just PM them to Inacio and I.
Also we need a new name for the actual server, so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

The marketplace should be a nice big open area with several vacant tent-like things that people can use as little shops. Like this:

Thats the general Idea of the marketplace. I think in order for a player made town to become a safe zone it should have a marketplace, it can be designed in any way in order to match that towns theme.
