I often make mine divide my city somehow, I try to get it through the "middle" of a developed area, because having a dividing line makes zone segregation easy, and makes toll management easy as well. The problem is that not every city sees "eye to eye" with others' borders.
That's my biggest problem, I'm fine with railroads and my avenues always split up my towns. If you take a look at Drexel Hill, Engie Ville and Media(I don't mind, just don't save it). I have mine all split up except for Drexel hill which has finally become slightly towering city.
What happened to piss town and pissing sounds? someone changed the landscape on the tile that my city was on.. (the one my mouse is on)

I restored them now, so hopefully it'll fix it.
Hold on, how did I delete 2 cities now? Where were Portsmouth and North Ashborough? All I did was try to restore the Piss cities and the dropbox says i deleted those 2. Whoever owns them, were they the highlighted tile in the above screencap and it's flat partner adjacent? Because those were the locations of Pissing Sound and Piss Town. It said these were owned by Spess Mehren.
EDIT:
I think the deleting thing there may have been false, I still see North Ashborough in my game, and it also says I deleted Temple of the Almighty on the dropbox, but it's still there according to my game. Anyone know why it says these files are getting deleted?
It said Andrew Henderson edited the piss towns earlier, and Geoff Caven edited Pissing Sound.
I managed to restore Pissing Sound, but Piss Town still isn't there.
i just restored pissing sounds
As of my last launch, it was there, but for some reason Piss Town won't restore, and now the landscape above Pissing Sound is a blank slate again.
EDIT:
Deleted the modified terrain that was there and it restored properly now.
...That needs to become a meme
Simcity WHY U ZONE SO STUPID!
To my recollection....the entire series has been plagued by either to idiotic placement of things or two specific and annoying.
SC3K wasn't as bad on placement, hell it had almost no problems, except for the seaport/airport zones...
Also restored Pissington Estates.

I think someone modified the regional configuration, there's now several large city plots around the map, probably enough for one each.
You guys need to make some more natural land marks, such as mountains/forests that cover several plots of land.
Whoever wants to can build over Ciudad de la Charca. I'm no longer developing that city.
I CANNOT PLAY THIS GAME AHH
I tried like 5 times, it goes like this. I establish my city, got all the basics, people start moving in, I make public services then fucking bam, It becomes impossible to keep my income over my spending, I try to cut corners, everyone starts bitching and goes on strike, I end up overtaxing and everyone leaves then I run out of money... How do I make a goddamn city? I only have the essentials for life and I end up failing

I figured out the easiest way to start building up a city is to just start with bear essentials: residential zones, commercial/industrial zones, power, and water (although optional, I would recommend this as you can get high-rises before even making schools, hospitals, etc). I would also recommend just starting out with high density zones instead of low and medium density zones. Then, slowly phase in the different necessities one at a time once growth plateaus.
I recall being able to get to ~40,000 (almost all low-income residents) without making any safety/health/education buildings, although success might vary.
Also, be sure to scale back funding on all of your buildings to fit your needs. I figured out once I did that, my budget problems became much more tame.
residential is your biggest money maker, use commercial to separate the industrial and residential zones. You gotta give it time to bake though.
I usually include everything; education, water, power, health, at least 1 fire and police and then when I get too far in debt rely on the "rewards" buildings on bringing my income back up, then if I get to an easily stable point, delete the more polluting/controversial ones. Also, does anyone else find that there always seems to be an irremovable den of crime near the Army base? I have once put 3 deluxe police stations right beside it, and all their choppers decide to hover over the area, and nothing changes, I'll get the "unearthed den of crime" message in 5 more minutes again.

i like making an industrial island
sort of like using the water as a moat to keep it from your precious residential and commercial areas
ferries are pretty nice for this, they're dirt cheap but they can make some crazy ass traffic jams

throw a meteor at it and see if they still unearth anything
It would appear that I keep deleting my city, and I have no clue as to why.

I did this for a long time, them I got some services and I'm rather stable right now, only thing is I have a hard time getting people in my city, It's been fluctuating from 3700 to 3900 for like 20 minutes now, I have high density industrial, residential, and commercial, the polls are all good...

which city are you anyway?
I got it, I'm at 17k now, pretty good city, I named it Nigeria It's really strayed away from all the other cities
[editline]6th July 2011[/editline]
I sorta dislike SC4 cause there is only one good, working way to set up a city, dope as fuck though

really, there are plenty of ways
just keep industry as far away from residences as you can, make sure needs are met, plan out your traffic grid CAREFULLY and build lots of parks.
those are really the key factors ingame, you can do whatever you want from there
[editline]6th July 2011[/editline]
btw water and parks are great for bringing in upper class people
How should I start my city? The other city I made failed miserably... DoonVille = horseshit(I ran out of money because of services).
Well my first city, Drachen, is pretty much done now. I might add another district off to the side of it but it's mostly finished.

just out of curiosity, are you using a trainer to get infinite money.
well -technically- it isnt a trainer
If cheating isn't allowed I can always turn it off

Put it in my city of Torontograd, due to its namesake.

Well, it is not only me who has "deleted" cities without ever touching them.
I was just zooming out to take a screenshot of what always happens to my cities and *BAM* The game closed. :(
I hate it when it does that
I restored them now, so hopefully it'll fix it.

As for North Ashborough, I kept restoring backups because somehow they were deleting.
I think it has something to do with connecting to cities. If my city's connected to yours, and we're both playing, it corrupts the saves of nearby towns.
