I do recall reading someone getting VAC banned from using SAM. I'm not sure though.

SAM is safe to use, as long as you are not running a VAC protected game while you use it

VAC is automated, so I don't think valve would care if it bans you or not.

Honestly, its all mostly singleplayer objectives they use anyway, like for instance if a person wanted to get the Super Meat Boy achievement but not ruin his save file, he should be fine with SAM.

Clear sky if you want the action like gameplay with slight survival horror elements.
