Technically the Zone was started because of a crazy Soviet experiment regarding a "noosphere" that was theorized by Vladimir Vernadsky back in the early days of the USSR, but the concept of modifying it never got off the ground IRL.

Hey fussy, I just recently joined Loners, all you have to do is fuckloads of quests for them. You have to fill up the 'Friend' bar to where the little arrowhead is.
Trust me, joining Loners is totally worth it. You can stroll around in the middle of battles and loot dead bodies. No one but renegades and military try to fuck with you.
