I can't figure out what the number means, if its good or bad.
Number of contacts, neutral, friendly, and hostile. Most hostile ones won't appear on your minimap.
NPCs nearby, if the number is higher than the number of green or yellow dots on the map you have trouble.
Okay, thanks I thought it was something bad.
Weapon damages and accuracy mostly. Shadow of Chernobyl and CS in particular have a "cone of fire" effect in weapons which makes them shoot all over the place even when trying to carefully aim down the sights.
Also, in vanilla Clear Sky pistol caliber bullets disappear after 50 meters of flight which is shockingly stupid.
So should I play CS vanilla first or should I get a mod to fix that?
I hate it when I'm just walking around and it goes from 0 to 8+ suddenly

You should still at least try vanilla first. If I were to hold a S.T.A.L.K.E.R boot-camp for rookies, unpatched vanilla Clear Sky would be the final examination after which you'll get your faction patch and can be truly considered a stalker.
It's an....exotic experience to say at least.
I never had any problem with vanilla CS, ballistics were fine for me you guys are just babies
I take it you've never played unpatched vanilla? Or 1.5.04 and similar early versions? The swamps were my personal purgatory, I went through that hellish grotto 7 goddamn times only to find out each time that the game crashes when you reach the point where [sp]the bandits ambush you and take your shit[/sp].
Fucking hell, using ironsights was completely worthless and you had to practically stick your gun into your enemy to damage them.

If by "exotic" you mean "Why wont this fucker die I shot him 30 times what is this shit" than yes.

This is what the weapons in vanilla CS feel like:

My brethren, Monolith, Freedom, Duty and the like, I have a story to unfold from my memories to your ears.
I was strolling towards around in Zaton, in a indirect route towards the waste processing plant, I listened to my collection of Tool, albeit only with one earbud to heard incoming arms fire or the snarl of a mutant crawling up on me.
I came closer to the plant, only to get fired at from the walkways on the outside of the big building some hundred meters infront of me. Dumbstruck by the unprovoked shooting, I unholstered my VAL and took a gander at the shooter. A exoskeleton wearing mercenary, of course, with somekind of rifle I could not identify at the moment. I quickly got back in cover as the big figure started firing towards me once again.
But something unexpected happened. I heard some Russian blabbeing behind me as some loners were coming closer.
One of them got shot and fell to the ground grasping his chest, trying to stop the major bleeding that the exo-wearing mercenaries rifle round caused.
I took a few potshots at the bastard then ran over to the wounded loner, who was being covered by his other two friends, and gave him my only medkit. He quickly thanked me then ran to cover with his friends, firing at the mercenaries running out of the building. I looked up at the walkway again, seeing that I killed the sniper. I felt a moment of bliss that was quickly taken away.
The loners were being shot down by the incoming squad, which also quickly fell. I joined in on the shooting, trying to take as many as I could before starting to bleed.
I quickly got back to my cover, the main gate, and bandaged myself up.
As I did that, my comrades fell dead to the ground.
The shooting had stopped.
I stood up and over looked the few friendly corpses to the big bunch for ten or so hired guns.
I quickly rummaged through my enemies then went over to my dead gun-toting comrades.
I saw several photos, most likely sons and daughters.
One of them had PDA which was still functional even though a bullet had seared through the bottom of it.
It was a message from a lover who also lived in the zone, I smiled at it before quickly going pale.
"A man who had been in love is laying dead before me." Was my only thought.
I stood up and dragged the loner corpses one by one to a safe location then walked away from the place, spitting on the mercenary corpses.
I put my earbud back in and kept on walking to a new destination, holding the memory close to me.

My job is done.
And I love you for it.
I played through all of them recently, finishing with clear sky, except my save games started crashing left and right in Limansk, ergh.
Gotta agree about the difficulty early on and the weapons. A TRs in perfect condition still has shots go off at weird angles at medium range.
Everyone loves Thorny.

Awww you guys <3
Hey Thorny, I got a ? and one piece of info. The piece of info is that the AK-74 in game is an AKS-74p. It doesn't particularly matter, just an FYI. The question is whether or not you are accepting user made stories that would be used in dialogue (I.E "Tell me a story/something interesting") about Scarecrow. It was something that actually happened in an AMK game of mine in which he single-handedly cleared the bloodsucker village with an L85, which will be impressive to anyone who has played with the AMK bloodsuckers.

Repost for new page.
I just had a wizardly idea for a very hard Redux playthrough: Equip five cracker artifacts, get a max weight limit of 10 kg.
Or just edit the actor.ltx, which would make it harder and it'd be easier than finding five of those. Either way, it's a challenge only fit for true wizards.

So uh, I just had an interesting encounter in Redux.
I was doing the Bandit weapon trade mission, things went badly and all the loners died. A blowout started, so I rushed to kill the Duty guy and go into the one blowout proof room. Nothing special, standing in there, waiting... when three loners spawn in the room and walk out.
I thought they were just going to go out there and die, but after about five seconds this comes back:

Now, either those loners changed suits quickly and became zombified (There were three zombies too), or the zombies came over and ate them. I checked around the building and the corpses of the loners weren't there.

I could do this. No armor, one medkit and two bandages, one and a half mag and one can of food.

Quick tip. Consider using Complete and Clear Sky Shaders Max when playing CS. Although I am a huge advocate of Vanilla on ones first playthrough CS is my only exception.
You played SoC yet also? Because it's best to play them in release order.
