I'd rather have them as a hostile mob you can't defend, how Notch said they'd be. I think it'd take the fright away from them.

They wouldn't spawn in your 1x2 caves, since they're 3 meters tall.

Since they move blocks, it'd be cool if you were down in your mine or sleeping and you come out after a day or so or wake up form sleeping and they've moved your entire house. Keeping it the exact same structure, maybe even reversing it to look at you, but moving it a few blocks away.
