I don't even need to click quote, my statement was so short and simple
"but I really just want people to realize they're playing a simplified, drunken DF."
Not much to talk about with RO2 3-4 months away anyway.
Have you tried out the new Darkest Hour patch?
It's pretty good. It has a fuck ton of changes and I guess the best feature is how airborne units have pistols.
Tons of new tanks.
Yeah the new Darkest Hour update is amazing, my favorites being the new scopes, mortars and catching fire and dying when your near an exploding tank.
It was amazing yesterday when I was beside a tank, it blows up and you see my charred body missing its leg on the ground.
The only thing that kills it for me though it the FOV change to 72, I feel closed it and sick while playing. Is this new FOV change actually for the better?
Sure, only some features from DF are taken, but all of those features are what make up Dwarfs?! If you must see rough numbers, 99% of it is taken from DF, but that's only a fraction of what DF actually is. I don't even know how to put it into words. Dwarfs?! is taking only basic things from DF but that's what Dwarfs?! is comprised of completely, the most basic functions of DF.
And sure, you take a screenshot of Dwarfs?! and then a screenshot of DF and they look nothing alike. One is (vanilla) ASCII, and the other consists of (badly) sprited icons. It also tends to look nothing like DF because you can't really control where your dwarfs dig, or arrange them so they make something pretty, or even construct anything remotely cool like in DF. There's no other way to say it. Doesn't sound like anyone here has even played DF for more than an hour.
If anything Dwarfs?! is more like fucking SimAnt, that's how simple it is. Hell Simant is more complex than Dwarfs?! Sure, it tends to a different audience, but only because it's so stupidly simple. Even the people that admit that it's simplified DF say "well i dont want to learn how the fuck to play DF." The two pros it has that I can possibly squeeze out of it are that it has a less confusing hud and less confusing controls, and neither of those are really pros anyway. The reason they're both less confusing is because you can do shit all relative to the things you can do in DF. Remove depth from any game and it's easier to learn, doesn't mean it's more fun.
I don't even like DF that much, nor do I play it any more. But it just seems so dumb to me to slap a price tag on a game that's already free. I stand by that it is literally fucking DF for kindergarteners. I'm not trying to be a dick either, but I really just want people to realize they're playing a simplified, drunken DF. That's exactly what they're doing. Go spend the time to learn DF, it's worth it.
Stop it, this is the RO2 thread. If you want to compare those two then go into their threads instead of shitting this up with offtopic arguments.

The only thing where a FOV change could be worse is on long range maps with tanks.

So like 25 percent of the maps.
You got the close in maps where you are, or should be, frantically twirling around like a tit making sure an enemy hasn't come up behind or to the side of you.
is it still TBA?
Am I the only one who thinks "gran" is just the worst map ever made?
I think most of the Darkest Hour maps are bad.
It is one of the best mods I have ever played, but holy damn the maps are awful. It's like they were made to be hard to walk/drive through.
AND SO BIG.
Why do realism games become jogging simulators.

because real life is a jogging simulator
uh i'm pretty sure they take transport or walk to where they need to go
I kind of dislike how they turned the trucks into mobile HQ's. So the only large troop transport is half tracks.
I think you can have a fun realism game without fuckhuge maps.
I don't think driving about in a lorry is the best thing to do during a battle.
Just, a personal opinion. An MG42 personal opinion.
Anyone know why I keep crashing in DH? It's always a critical error after a few minutes or so of playing.
is it still TBA?
August most likely.
I rather like the medium-large combined arms maps, its always fun swerving around tank shells to try and get into a village.
also what error do you get? or does it just crash?
Tripwire hasn't announced an official release date yet but 1C Company which is in charge of retail version of tripwire's games had RO2 listed for august.

It just crashes. Also I get a critical error when I enter certain servers with custom maps.
anyone used the mortars yet? they fun/good?
Haven't found a map where mortars work yet. The mortar class just spawns with only the rifle, no mortar, no binocs.

maybe you've run out of disk space and so you can't download custom maps and keep running out of paging space or somthing?
if you've got plenty of room try verifying the game's integrity or redownloading it

You would hate PR.
[editline]8th May 2011[/editline]
But seriously though, realism games with small maps become less of realisms and more of twitch shooters imho.
I like large seamless worlds ala arma2 and just cause but not large-sized standard maps like DH tank maps

When you want something with more depth, you should have a bit more patience, I agree zeldar.
Just downloaded DH and had a blast on it.
Felt well boss laying down the smokes and HE'ing the buildings supporting our infantry in a stuat.
I just feel like a boss in tanks by default. Nothing like providing immense amounts of fire, killing entire squads of the enemy in seconds, and simultaneously boosting the morale of your teammates.
I STILL hate how one T-34 can obliterate any tank that the Axis can throw at it.
I hope RO2 will give tank battles some of the magic that made infantry combat excellent.

Making it easier to figure out where your gun is pointing, where your tank is going, and where you're looking in through the internal viewport as gunner would definitely help.
