There will be a more 'open' beta, at least so far as I'm aware. Right now, the beta is still in a rather small group consisting of the core outside testers (hi), and some F&F invites.

It was originally a UT mod. It actually looked kinda different, and the Patriarch wasn't officially added yet (was still in early stages being created).
Same with RO.

That article is amazing, it just shows how much effort went into RO to make sure it won and overall into the whole game its self. A making of RO2 would be pretty cool for a collectors addition with the same kind of style.

We will have a large closed beta near launch. Right now we are still working our way through the Friends and Family beta and slowing phasing into the clan beta by bringing more people on.

Well he was just talking about how 2 guys said they weren't going to buy the game anymore because the community is bad, and that a look through Facepunch will show what many (he and and 2 people) think of the community atm.
