i would quite like it if levelling gave you points like in World Of Warcraft, they could then have a web just like the achievement's, you buy 1 and the rest around our unlocked, you could then choose mining or fighting or defence, each would give you a skill to help with what you chose
I like that idea too, having talent trees from which you can pick out new perks and abilities. You could have one for survival (more maximum HP, resistance to damage, perhaps the top perk being fire invulnerability?), one for mining (more durable tools, quicker mining speeds, perhaps the top perk could be like a 'sense diamonds' sort of thing?) and one for combat (faster sword swings, the ability to block, increased armour effectiveness?)
I don't want levelling or that kind of shit or permadeath. Implementing levelling means in multiplayer you are going to end up with even more elitist tards. If servers can disable that thing and you can remove it entirely from your own game then good.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'd rather have hunger than experience points. Think about the griefing possibilities! A level X with diamond armor and swords could camp spawn and kill everyone.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH THANK YOU NOTCH. You guys don't know how much I love difficult games. I love games like Nethack, Dwarf Fortress, ADOM, and the like. Seeing notch actually make a mode that is hard will make me extremely happy. I would actually pay for minecraft again to get this mode. (Don't get any ideas, notch.)
He should introduce perks such as: faster mining, more minerals from one block, faster crop growing etc. Good idea for gaining additional XP should be by fulfilling achievements. I would also like to see things such as upgrading; upgrade furnace so it can have faster smelting rate or more space, only one can be chosen at time. The idea would be nice if he made something as perk tree, you can choose 3 different main types and have full tree with things you can choose from once you level up. Well it's nothing new, but I see it working with minecraft.
Mods will let you take it off, I would imagine.
Unfortunately with every single update he breaks all the mods.
it's probably gonna end up like hardcore in terraria sans the dropped items you lose what you are carrying, all xp and boosts from it, but the world stays the same. possibly chests are emptied too.
I would see the chests being emptied as well. Otherwise, it would pretty much just be normal minecraft, but with XP. While people would whine and complain "Boo, minecraft is supposed to be easy!", there's always Creative Mode being added. Plus, Notch did want to make this a Dwarf-Fortress 3D game.

Nothing major though, you should be able to do anything even without skills, just not as well.
I dont think it means permadeath like that. I'm pretty sure its just that you lose all of the experience and levels that you've gained when you die.
Ohh I get it. I read that completely wrong then I guess. Well then I like this even better then.
Y'know, if you actually do lose XP when you die, your corpse should drop some XP orbs, so you can salvage at least some of your advancement if you can make it back to where you died. Perhaps even try "backing up" XP in Books, so that you can retain experience in a sort of library.
This x 1000

This is probably for adventure mode or something. Nobody would be forcing you to play Adventure mode. And if this ends up un-toggleable for Survival mode then you have reason to complain.

So glad someone reminded notch that he can release information again since the update is ages away.
You could just do it that instead of "skill trees" you have a craft tree where you have to reach X level or acquire X item to progress.

It means I cannot play survival mode the old way if such occurs. I have no problems if this update is for a separate gamemode, but I like the old one without skills and stuff.
Looks promising. Very different from what MC has started from.
This x 1000
I've always had the idea of Libraries and Books having an important thing to do with Minecraft and experience. Long ago, about a week or so, I suggested something along the lines of using Books to record what you've seen and experienced in the world, like the weaknesses of a certain mob, the state of your crops, the alignment of the heavens, all sorts of useful stuff. Tying into the usage of Books for research and experience, you could use Bookcases to cash-in your knowledge by depositing the filled Books in them, so you can learn how better to kill an enemy, grow special crops, predict Blood Moons and Right Stars (when the stars are aligned and the creatures of the Otherworlds walk the earth freely), and so forth.
Sounds cool to me. For the people that don't want this, he could make it an option that you can turn on and off. Otherwise just deciding with an automated system would be pretty boring and not as fun. Fair maybe, but not as fun.

Not sure if anyone here was around when Notch said this, http://notch.tumblr.com/post/395204720/no-xp-no-levels
No xp, no levels! I got convinced not to add it. The basic argument is that it adds artificial progression to the game and that it encourages grinding, and that it effectively penalizes new players instead of penalizing death. I still want to come up with some fun way of having something like perma death in multi player, but I don’t think XP and levels are right for the game. Thank you for your feedback. =)
Given this was a long time ago and the audience for Minecraft has changed a long time. Though I admire his change of thought, I always wanted leveling and more of a goal for Minecraft.
Oh god i do not want this at all I don't want a challenge, i just want to play minecraft for fun. I hope that this doesn't happen on peaceful or something.
Oh god i do not want this at all I don't want a challenge, i just want to play minecraft for fun. I hope that this doesn't happen on peaceful or something.
That's why he's implementing creative mode.
I wonder if we will have terrain generation in creative mode?
So it seems 1.8 is going to make minecraft into more of an actual game. Cant wait to see the effect this has in SMP!
I'd rather they have fucking peramadeath then a leveling system, they released little information on what the fuck it means to level up, but if it means that you get stronger or get perks like in an RPG, I'll cry myself to sleep. I hope that it either doesn't get added or works like you get a level as in like a safety thing, the more levels you have the safer you are from permadeath, and each time you die you loose a level - but if you get to a point where you have no levels you die forever
Y'know, if you actually do lose XP when you die, your corpse should drop some XP orbs, so you can salvage at least some of your advancement if you can make it back to where you died. If he's adding permadeath I'd like to see him bring back random respawn locations It was always fun dying from a creeper then going on a mini-adventure looking for landmarks of my old base [editline]21st July 2011[/editline]
I've always had the idea of Libraries and Books having an important thing to do with Minecraft and experience.
Each bookcase contains maybe 3 books, each book can have a maximum of 100/500/1000 XP put into them (Depending on how rare XP is when 1.8 is out) When you deposit the XP, you lose that amount of Experience to the book, and when you use the book later, you could regain maybe 75% of what you deposited, meaning it isn't just a lifesaver for you to technically respawn on
I think the bookcases thing should work like this: The player can deposit knowledge to books when he has XP. The book will contain 25% of his current XP. If the player stores this book, it can be reread (after death of course) , resulting in it breaking, and the player regaining that XP. The player must have less XP than the book contains to gain from it. If the player takes books with knowledge in them and makes them into what should be a bookcase, it will become a "library" Libraries store 50% XP of the current player, and can be reused forever through lives, but you can only gain if you have less than what it has. XP will not rollover, so if the player has 499, and the library has 500, his XP will only go up by one. The library can be overwrote, but the player must have 3 times more XP than the library contains. So the 500 XP library requires 1500 XP to overwrite, which will bring the library up to 750 XP. This would allow the player to regain some of the lost XP, but the player will have to WORK HARD to be able to ascend levels if they die a lot. I know Minecraft isn't supposed to be forgiving, but there is a fine line between "I wanna be the guy" and "Challenging"
XP Storing in books should work in increments, say every 5 levels you get, you can store 1 level worth of xp as general knowledge for your next life. Storing the XP doesn't cost anything, just requires the 5 levels to be there.
