I think it would be best for them to follow Diablo II's footsteps and make a "Hardcore" mode for the permadeath. That way your permadeath is locked on to that world, so you still have a choice, but once its made you cannot escape it.
Minecraft should go MMORPG. With guilds and guild chat, or something similar.
@Disagrees: What exactly would be so bad at infinite maps supporting infinite players, completely player-controlled cities, random encounters in the wilds and player-driven economy? [editline]21st July 2011[/editline] That didn't mean they should give up the current gamemodes. The only thing they'd have to add is support for running different parts of the map on different servers, and some sort of group system.

If he doesn't add a toggle for it, someone else probably will.
Not going to like this in multiplayer at all, there's already a shitty mod like this.
I'm fine with hunger. I actually like it, adds a reason to walk out of my underground facility. I also find the idea of gaining XP decent, but only if it's done right. I would imagine gaining XP would be done by finding experience orbs in those ravines/dungeons, along with some rare treasures too. But if gaining XP is just mindlessly killing mobs, then I'm not quite sure I'd like it. I want Minecraft to turn into more of a roguelike/adventure game, for example the things that the Relics mod is adding; not a RPG such as WoW.
I congratulate notch on taking a step towards making minecraft into something. All it has been so far is a tech demo. The game needs to have more direction, more things to do and more adventure. Hopefully notch sees this and decides to add things to achieve this goal. All of you complaining about experience and leveling are not seeing the big picture. Notch is trying to broaden his audience in order keep the game successful and future proof it. Stop whining, he will do what's best for his game, do you really think he is going to ruin it by adding a small feature?
Yes.
I would prefer it if this xp/permadeath business was on a seperate gamemode/difficulty, I enjoy this game because of how simple it is, it doesn't need to be full of content to be enjoyable, this is why I haven't been playing Terraria for a while, while it has a lot of content, it is nowhere near as fun, and you can't be as creative with building.
Not going to like this in multiplayer at all, there's already a shitty mod like this.
Maybe, but the official one might actually be... better than that mod. *SHOCK!* *HORROR!* *DRAGONS!*
I've been playing this game for an incredibly long time and you guys need to have more faith in Notch's ability to implement something well. When 1.8 comes around I would put good money on the odds that experience will not be limiting on your ability to play as you want. People who want to just play and build, then while that experience bar will be there it's not going to really effect you apart from the visual. If you do care about levelling then the advantages will probs. only really effect combat or even less -> just there for progress. Obv. this is my opinion but so far Minecraft hasn't had one poor mechanic and I am sure that this mechanic will stand find for all reasonable players.
fucking called it! http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1108778-Higher-height-limit!?p=31207304&highlight=#post31207304
Oh wait, I misread one of the posts. I'd prefer experience gained through other ways besides killing monsters. Doing everyday activities like exploring and mining should also fill that bar up.

*reason to upgrade underground facility with farms and stuff.
cool world of minecraft im already lvl 32 w8 whats that sound BOOM crap im only lvl 1 now dont like the idea that death looses lvls, -1 realism please, those mmorpgs are boreing, WoW lets u die alot, like on my main, 1500 or so deaths and no real downside to dying also the fact that the game is in open beta, dont be supprised that every update breaks mods....
Technically bro, it isn't as realistic, since in real life, permadeath is SUPER permanent, unless you're Hindu or Buddhist, in which case permadeath only aborts your current character and starts you off with a new character partially based on how you played your previous character.
I really like this. It will make people actually try to survive and being more careful.

I don't know how you could possibly miss that if you play WoW as much as you say you have.
God damn it. I don't want this. At all.
I don't want a totally passive feature I can ignore.
It kind of pisses me off how people whine about this stuff so much. I trust Notch to make a good game the same way I trust a bus driver to take me where I need to go. You probably don't understand why he takes the route he does, but it's probably for a good reason. At the end of the trip you're still at your destination and you'll probably like what Notch does with this, too.

for those of you who missed it they don't have their heads up their asses
I have no problem with XP, but permadeath is going to be the worst thing to ever happen to Minecraft when it's implemented no matter what the form. People are absolutely going to get angry- oh that's right they already are.
I think it's pretty cool, I could see it working very very effectively as an RPG, perhaps even as an MMORPH if the survival based server is large enough. I like exploring, but it does tend to get dull. I hope the permadeath is toggle-able.
make it toggle able
This.
If Notch doesn't make it togge-able, as somebody stated earlier, there will most definitely be a mod to turn off permadeath/xp all together. Hell, there's a mod to remove all the difficulties except for hard mode/peaceful mode.
I would love if XP was implemented basically in the form of "you just naturally improve your mining skills/speed". For example, you START at exactly the same speed everything is now, so nothing is nerfed or changed so as to keep people from getting upset, and then when you level up you can mine faster with your hand or whatever tools with whatever materials, and then it gets faster and faster, etc.
