• Notch reveals leveling, experience points.

Bedrock tools.
I wish there were more building materials, something like obsidian bricks with the same durability but without the look.
There needs to be more types of tools. Like a material thats half-way between iron and diamond or something.
Steel.
Notch should make a forge block, made from 8 furnaces and a lava bucket in the middle, sort of like making a furnace out of cobble, but replace the cobble with furnaces. The forge would be like a furnace, only has a 2x2, or 3x3 grid of it's own, over the fuel source (lava). You can use the forge to put ores or ingots in it to smelt them together to make metal alloys, etc.

Bronze tools would be neat, between stone and iron. If notch rises the map height that is.
So what will be the outcome of leveling up? Like why would we want to? Will it allow our tools to last longer or what?
I really hope notch doesn't let mobs break blocks. Outside of maybe a zombie apocalypse gamemode.
Netherrack tools that light enemies on fire when combined with flint & steel. That would be fucking awesome.
I think it would be cool to store experience in experience orbs, but allow you to use them with other things. Example: You just hit level two, and you have a slot that appears next to your 4x4 crafting slot that has an experience orb in it. You can put a tool or utility like a furnace inside the slot and it will upgrade the tool to have 25% more uses or repair it, otherwise you can put a furnace in the slot for the furnace to smelt 25% faster. Or you can use a book in the slot to store the experience for use later. (To expand on the bookshelf idea posted previously) You could store the orbs for later, or use it on an tool/furnace up to four times. This would give you double the uses of an item. Or it would give you double the smelting speed. They would be a physical object that you could trade with other players aswell. Maybe even using them as a currency.

Like Netherrack smelted with Obsidian for a Terraria-esque Hellstone ingot.
The problem with using them as upgrades would be that someone could just kill themselves and level back up easily to gain orbs.
More ore types would be cool. You can just make ores more spread out and at varying degrees in the height. There should also be some rare metals. Diamond really isn't that rare, just go down to bedrock level and mine like normal.
All of your bases combined are composed of only 1 stack of cobblestone?
Some of us like to use non-cobble blocks for bases, leaving the cobble for tools.
All of your bases combined are composed of only 1 stack of cobblestone?
he has to make cutbacks somewhere
Some of us like to use non-cobble blocks for bases, leaving the cobble for tools.
Really? When I play Minecraft I end up with so much cobble that I just end up throwing it away, or storing it in a chest room to be never used again.
If permadeath isn't toggle-able I will fucking kill myself.
but you won't respawn, that doesn't make any sense anyway, I hope it isn't toggleable, you can't fucking fine tune the game. Doing so is stupid.
Obsidian should be stronger than diamond because you need a diamond pickaxe to mine it. It might not be realistic, but it makes sense when you think about what you need to get the materials.
You can get something like 1500 obsidian from a diamond tool, which will take a long time, but compare 30 seconds to the average time to find diamond. Also, WE DO NOT FUCKING NEED A NEW TEIR OF TOOLS. A new tier of armor would be different, but tools are fucking fine the way they are. Adding another tier would be stupid. There is no good reason to add another tier. They all have their uses. Wooden is just a filler tier, you only need to make one tool. It's to start you out. Stone can be mass produced but is tedius to use, but if you want to save on iron use this. Iron is a pretty good tool to use. If you have a lot of it, just make a bunch of these and it'll last you. Diamond is pretty rare, but making tools are worth it if you mine a lot. Gold is another filler tier. Adding some other fucking tier won't help gameplay But armor is different. "Leather - It's weak, but if have a animal farm make it over and over again if you can." "Iron - Will last a very long time, make this in a case when going on long trips or long cave splunking, or if you're safe, just make it when you need it" "Diamond - You should never fucking make this, iron will be fine. Diamond is better spent on tools" "Gold - You can't find another use for it, and you don't see making a railway anytime soon, so might as well" My idea is an armor set that combines the drops from all mobs into an armor set between iron and leather called Bone Armor.
Really? When I play Minecraft I end up with so much cobble that I just end up throwing it away, or storing it in a chest room to be never used again.
I have a warehouse dedicated to cobble. Literally rows of double crates going horizontally and vertically in aN old quarry I used to mine from.
Unfortunately, I'll have to somewhat disagree on this one. I'm fond of the idea of experience and leveling. I wouldn't mind losing my levels when I die, it wouldn't be that much of a hindrance. (It'd be kinda like that one Motherload game on XGen Studios. You die and lose your upgrades.) Now, I don't like the idea of permadeath. I love my world, and I love playing in it. Having said that, I'm also extremely clumsy. I get killed very often. I don't want to lose my first and best world all because of a creeper hiding right outside my door. Yes, I heard you guys mention creative mode. So, is it going to be like the original creative mode? If so: I don't like it. I like having to search for resources to build my house. It leaves me with a sense of accomplishment. I searched for blue dye underground for two hours to make my blue carpet, and it's really satisfying to see it completed. I don't like it when all blocks imaginable are handed right to you for infinite use. Besides, I'd kinda miss the feeling of being well defended in my house as the zombies run around aimlessly outside. If not, and it's actually exactly like or very similar to the current survival mode: Great. I didn't really read the whole thread, but I skimmed over most of it. If you figured it out in the pages I skipped, could anyone clear me up on what exactly the creative mode is going to be like, and what "permadeath" actually means?
I think the best solution to the permadeath / creative / regular difficulty debate would be a toggle upon load, which is what I've always wanted anyway. Make it so you pick your difficulty on loading a world. That way you can change things later if you want, and it's easier to focus your playtime.
Y'know, i've been wondering about what levelling would bring to Minecraft, and then I remembered Notch saying something about a Sprint function, which will probably require some sort of Sprint meter that drains as you Sprint. And that's when it popped into my head; one could select an "attribute" to increase upon levelling up. For example, levelling up could grant the option of add a Heart, or a Ham (the apparent icon for Hunger), or an extension of the Sprint meter. Other possible attributes/statistics/etc could potentially be upgraded as well, if they are implemented. But this is just an idea, not what is likely to happen. I still have no rock-solid idea of what Minecraft levelling will do, just like everyone else.
Personally I think one should simply store XP in Books, since knowledge is power, isn't it?
That would certainly give books/shelves a use for once, and a logical one that would help gameplay, too.
You only lose your levels and held items, not your world
Thank you. My fears have been put to rest.
Bronze tools would be neat, between stone and iron. If notch rises the map height that is.
Seeing as Notch decided to make gold tools weak as fuck to keep it "realistic" (due to gold being a very soft metal), bronze would actually be a lot stronger than iron. The only reason the iron age happened after the bronze age is because iron was easier to work with, manufacture and find than bronze, which requires both tin and copper which are rarely found near each other. Personally, I'm all for more ores, minerals and other geological crap. Being able to combine metals to make alloys would be cool, and more industrial applications that require different metals would be pretty awesome too, for example using copper to make boilers and pipes, lava and water pumps etc. Imagine being able to come across a huge geode deep underground - a large hollow pocket filled with glittering gemstones stabbing out of the ground like huge spines.
I really hope notch doesn't let mobs break blocks. Outside of maybe a zombie apocalypse gamemode.
I disagree, I think it'd be great if mobs could break blocks. I mean, not the average zombie or skeleton, but maybe goblins or something could burn down wood, or trolls could break through cobble. It'd make having a house built of stronger materials more worthwhile in singleplayer.
And minecraft has been ruined forever I always felt that the fact that there was no leveling system in minecraft was the biggest appeal of the game
