Zomband was great, until the mutated bugs and shit started fucking the military camp.
Updated the OP with Elona and ADOM. Did a bit of reorganization. Unfortunately, I don't think Zomband is entirely fit to go on because the main list will mostly consist of long roguelikes like Angband and such. I also will not add Dwarf Fortress because there's already a huge thread on it, and it isn't exactly a roguelike in all of it's entirety. I'll compile a list of other roguelikes and throw them in
tags at the bottom sometime tomorrow or whatever.
Nethack is the best rougelike by far. I imagine a time where there wasn't a huge guide to it, and everything was a mystery. Must have been so great back then.
god, nethack has the ugliest site ever [editline]20th January 2011[/editline] I'm still gonna try it though
Transcendence counts as a roguelike?
it's pretty cool I guess. I'm not used to ASCII anymore, I've been playing Stone Soup and IVAN too long. I have a tilepack for Dorf fort too. :v: [editline]20th January 2011[/editline] holy shit elona even has music
Man, elona looks awesome but I could never get into it. I first started as a mage and that went pretty well but I kept running out of spells and never had enough money to buy more. Then I tried and archer but that didn't work out either and I kept dieing.
I was playing IVAN, had a bunch of stuff, killing everything in sight. Then a magpie I couldn't hit started hitting my groin until I died. :saddowns:
You guys forgot Zomband! :frown: http://www.zooptek.net/drupal/?q=node/15
I have a love-hate relationship with IVAN because it has a lot of good systems and it's very easy to do scripting, but the developers were sadistic fuckers who purposefully made it a pain in the ass to play by your own rules, be it through messing with the source code or just using wizard mode. :smugdog: <-IVAN dev And by messing with the source code I don't mean enabling respawn, I tried to create a bunch of new weapons and enemies.
I like to occasionally telnet into nethack.alt.org and watch people play nethack.
Oh cool. I didn't know this existed. Thanks for the heads up man.

Get killed when a guy throws a rock at your head because he doesn't like your music.
If there was a way to turn off pets in Nethack and IVAN, i dont like the idea of dogs dying :smith:
If there was a way to turn off pets in Nethack and IVAN, i dont like the idea of dogs dying :smith:
Unfortunately, no. But in both IVAN and Nethack, keeping your pet is generally a good idea. In NetHack, there is a leash that allows you to keep your dog with you at all times. I don't know if that exists in IVAN, however. It's generally a good idea to keep your pet because if you come across a wand of polymorph, you can take a chance of turning that dog into something cool.
Desktop Dungeons. :downs:
In Nethack there is a option to disable a starting pet, i better like the idea of a little girl (Elona), than a puppy getting grinded to meatballs.. weird enuff'. I could hack around with the IVAN source, and disable the starter pet, you can always use a scroll of taming on some zombie goat or something later in game..
Nethack is an incredible game. Supposedly, it is beatable, but even with wizard mode and the proper items I still find it a challenge. It's very much a test of wits and skill rather than grabbing the best equipment and blasting through.
Nethack is a relatively easy roguelike, actually. The hardest roguelike I've beaten is ADOM and even then it was sheer luck and only a normal ending.
Zomband is a zombie roguelike game, it's pretty fun. It used to be pretty popular on facepunch. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/648325-Zomband-A-zombie-roguelike http://www.zooptek.net/drupal/?q=node/15
So many hours spent in the dungeons of Angband. Need to start up a new elf mage and get raped by goblins.
XBLA indie games has some fun roguelikes [editline]22nd January 2011[/editline] Grid bugs are OP in POWDER
I have ivan on my flash drive, it's what I play on the school computers. I've downloaded dwarffortress, but it's too complex for me. I lack the urge to learn it's basics.
XBLA indie games has some fun roguelikes [editline]22nd January 2011[/editline] Grid bugs are OP in POWDER
Wait, weren't there grid bugs in the original tron?

I spent the day playing it at college on this big screen TV we had hooked up to a computer. Every character I played was another one of my friends names. The two best deaths were Sam, who died beating zombies to death with his own arm while bleeding out, and Jason, who died throwing up and losing consciousness because of spider poison while stuck in a spider web getting attacked by spiders. Jason has arachnophobia irl. :v: Stone Soup is another great one. Constantly challenging and a great pick of races and classes.

IVAN was my first so it remains close in my heart, theres nothing like kicking down a door and getting blown up by a suicide dwarf.
I've recently gone crazy playing all of these. POWDER, IVAN, Nethack, they're really addicting.
