Endermen or Farlanders? - Games

Why do you even care about a name for a creature in a game where you don't exactly "speak". Their names are only for reference anyways, and cut the whole "it takes away from it's mysticism" bullshit, if you want to believe it's from the "far lands" then keep imagining just that. It's not like Notch ever said what their origin was, it's just your imagination playing up so you think everything should be changed to fit that. It's like reading a book and there's a character with vague description so you imagine it, then you go to a movie where the director interpreted the character otherwise, so you'll demand him to change the actor to fit your personal description

At the end of the day, they're all fucking creepies.

Farlanders sounds corny and is much less original than endermen. Even notch agrees.

I don't like "Farlanders" as a name. Not only does it not sound cooler than Endermen, it's also less comfortable to say than "Endermen". Try saying the words a few times, and it should come as no surprise which one feels nicer to talk about.

Farlanders sounds a bit cliche for a name if you ask me.

Hey, I was just looking through this thread, then a thought occurred to me: I don't give a shit!

When I hear Farlander I think of a human from an far-off land, not some kind of monster. But I think I'd prefer it over Enderman. The game is pretty standalone in most respects but now Notch is putting in an obvious reference to a specific piece of internet culture that will probably be forgotten about in a few years. I told my dad (who plays minecraft but doesn't read the blog, etc.) about it and he could tell it was a reference to something but didn't know what. I then had to explain slenderman to him (and he had nightmares for a week). Enderman is such a strange sounding name, it doesn't mean anything on it's own. Zombies and Ghasts are old and established concepts. Skeletons and Spiders are just...skeletons and spiders. Creepers are original but they have a name that suits them, they creep up on you. Endermen... um... I'd prefer some other name that is standalone. One that you don't have to know about Slenderman to understand. Something that either describes them or their behaviour. Why not just call them slendermen? They're tall slender men. If you know what Slenderman is, then it's already obvious enough where the idea came from. It feels like he's simply taken the first letter off in an attempt to hide the fact that it's just Slenderman.

FYI He called them endermen because someone on reddit pointed out that they looked similar to slenderman, thus the name endermen came about Endermen isn't even that bad of a name if you don't know the reference, you could assume they're from the end of ____, it's also odd enough that you can't relate it to anything except slenderman, so people who didn't get the reference would have no idea what an enderman would look like and no point of reference for it's story adds to the mystery Farlanders makes them automatically from the farlands, meaning there's somewhere these are common and live normally, they're obviously here to explore or for a quest for something and all these make them less mysterious, it also implies that someone knows they come from the far lands, meaning they survived one or multiple encounters with them, it's definitely not as scary or creepy then Oh and he got the idea for the mob from the angels in doctor who, he's said previously he wanted a mob that acted like them.
