Oh god.
I should have kept the thread open just for that reply.
Planning to work on something in UDK with a few friends, so I decided to learn myself modelling. Slow progress, but it's going upwards. Yesterday I was going to try and make a lightbulb and got pretty much stuck on how to continue after drawing it from a plane. So I went looking for tutorials on it, and then I found it; Lathe. FUCKING MAGIC.
well i start modding after i got CSS in 2009 ive made several levels in source a lot of unfinished crap. this is one i did recently for Killing floor. anyone that knows softimage and wants to delve deeper into the program watch some of these videos! http://www.vast.ws/resources/xsi/tutorials/tutorials.html
your map looks a little dark there buddy
your map looks a little dark there buddy
it fits the theme of killing floor.
and just like that I'm about to load up 3ds max
Hopefully this will make people stop making content-less threads. I started by making maps for the Source Engine, like many others.
I recently got inspired to make learn how to code. I love it, and I am a natural! My friend is an awesome artist, and he is also learning how to program. Overall, we are planning our first project- an innovative voxxelized 2D platformer( it is not like minecraft or terraria).

Is blender the only free modeling tool to use? I'm going to take a shot at modeling again. Though last I remembered I couldn't even make a box.
I use Silo 2, which is a bigger and more sophisticated version of Wings3D, I'd suggest using that.
I am LEARNING. I have a metric shitton of C books, and they are all big ones. I also have 2 basic books. Me and my friend don't plan doing anything huge for a while yet- maybe some worm in game maker, but that's about it. Here is somethin I am reading to learn python; http://inventwithpython.com/
I get an awesome idea, start working on it, then get a better one, and scrap my old idea so I never finish any of them. I have about 200 unfinished .vmfs :v: Some of them are decent, but I'm too busy with other projects to finish them.
How did you make those stairs? [editline]28th June 2011[/editline] You should REALLY keep working on that.
Me and a friend of mine both loved zombies/css. so... 4 years later, he go into modeling/coding/animation and i got into mapping/coding/sound effects. outcome:
That was a great read, I would definitely say that it is a good motivation for those creative minds to not give up on their ideas and eventually make them happen.
Patriarch, I have learned through a for dummies book for C. Get a for dummies book for C, C#, or Java. Use online books for Python, or real books. Just don't use the for dummies book for python- it sucks.
What's the best programming language for someone to get into? Should I just try to jump into a useful one or start in a simpler one? And which one is the most useful?
Fucking procrastination. That alone is why I'll probably never become an actual modder.
That means you don't want it badly enough
What's the best programming language for someone to get into? Should I just try to jump into a useful one or start in a simpler one? And which one is the most useful?
I've heard Python is pretty easy to learn, and that it's pretty popular. I couldn't get very far with it, but that's just me.
What's the best programming language for someone to get into? Should I just try to jump into a useful one or start in a simpler one? And which one is the most useful?
That's like saying what's the best language to learn. I'd say jump straight into C++. Provided you get a good book (I recommend getting a physical book), you can just chug away at it, using what you learn as you go, working your way through the book.
What's the best programming language for someone to get into? Should I just try to jump into a useful one or start in a simpler one? And which one is the most useful?
Java is a great start. I am taking Computer Science in college and it seems like a really good language to start off from. I've seen a bunch of tutorials for Java and a few API pages for it as well: http://www.freejavaguide.com/corejava.htm I've personally took a class for it, but someone probably could learn it by experience themselves. If you are serious about learning though, definitely pick up a book on Java.
How did you make those stairs? [editline]28th June 2011[/editline] You should REALLY keep working on that.
They're just blocks copied and pasted, nothing too complicated :v: I would continue it, but compile times are already very long, and I'm nowhere close to finished (That's just the entrance) I'm not really sure the source engine could handle it all. (Plus all the statues and reliefs are way beyond my modeling abilities.)
I was totally an ideas guy too once. I still am, although I learned myself to map and texture, also tried learning C++ but never really got around to that.
My first mod, in 2001, was a skin for this rabbit in Dark Forces 2. I colored him red. It was pretty stupid, but I learned how to make textures and get them ingame.
Isn't that Max from Sam and Max? I don't remember him in that game.
Quite an inspirational OP, thank you for it. I would like to model and program stuff however with modelling I always get fed up as there's either a problem or difference with the version of the software of which have compared to the software used in the tutorial (I was using Blender as I heard it was good and it was free). I also could never find a modelling tutorial series which I could follow along, normally the ones I found lasted maybe for a few beginner stages and nothing else came of them. With programming I begun using a pdf called 'How to Learn Python the Easy Way' which was great to get me started and I liked the way it was taught however Python wasn't really for me and what I wanted to achieve / produce with programming so I moved onto Lua as I thought maybe one day I could produce something fun or interesting in a game like Garry's mod. With programming in general I feel that it takes me much longer to catch on and understand things than most other people which really de-motivates me. Recently because of 'important' exams my work on learning Lua was disrupted and I want to get started again, but I really have no idea what to do.
I was always into effects. I liked to draw explosions and fire and shit, and it wasn't until I found a texture replacement for the default HL2 muzzleflashes on FPSBanana that I started to do effects for games. At first they were just texture replacements like the one I had found. I did a little effects pack some of you may remember (which in retrospect is pretty bad looking. Source muzzleflashes pretty much never look good) I got a bit better at it, and eventually signed on with Tales from the Galactopticon to make some custom sprites for them. I played about a little in Gcon when I decided to give the particle editor a look. I saw what they'd done with their effects and began to learn the basics of how things worked in the editor. I started to tinker with what they'd made, and within a week or two, had really gotten the hang of the particle editor. Mega shitty explosion particle from when I was still learning the editor Now I'm the lead effects designer for Galactopticon and Firearms: Source, contributed some effects to Ivan's Secrets, and have already signed on with two other mods. And nowadays I'm making things that look like this:
[img_thumb]http://i.cubeupload.com/4V4Mh3.jpg[/img_thumb]
When you first start getting into modding you always want to fixate yourself on one part to increase the quality in your work with that part. You've done that greatly, I wish I could make effects like that.

Also 3dsMax has a free student version.
