I'm downloading the Source SDK right now to see if I can make a map. I'll probably get frustrated very quickly and then give up.
Why do people go into mapping with an attitude like that? Just put your mind to it and read the wiki when you need a push in the right direction.
So does anyone know a modeling program that's free, has a plugin for smd, and is not XSIMod Tool?
Blender.
What's wrong with XSI Mod Tool?
From what I've heard, both of those are great. But blender is a bit better for beginners. And if you're semi brain dead, use Sculptris.
What's wrong with XSI Mod Tool?
Any time I do any kind of primitive, delete it it and make a new different primitve, it looks like a 5 year took a pencil scribbled lines all over the paper and I can't fix it. I asked various times in modeling section on FP, in this thread, on youtube. No one helps. Or they probably don't use XSI.
Buy a book about modeling. I know it sounds like a cop-out and a waste of money, but books written by professionals are usually better than tutorials posted on the internet.
not to start an argument, but everyone learns differently. i wouldn't bet on me learning from a book, but i'd bet the entire state of idaho and all of it's residents on me learning from a video.
All those potatoes... I guess you have a point.

Simply because it's a decent program and they have free student accounts providing you can prove you are a student. There's nothing wrong with XSI by the way. It's actually quite an ok program once you get to know the interface.

If someone was to tell me what I'm doing wrong then I would love XSI again.

Is there a good YouTube series on how to use Hammer? Kind of like "You Suck at Photoshop", but with Hammer?

YouTube has pages of Hammer stuff, you'll have lots to choose from, IMO.
Does anyone know if the engine being developed for the game "Overgrowth" is going to be open to the public like UDK and Source SDK? Because it looks incredible and I'd like to learn how to make any game I can come up with on that.

They'd be willing to give a direct answer, surely.
