I'm sorry, but no. The Source SDK hasn't received a substantial update in months and Source 2007 does not support the Mac, and especially not Linux. Valve have completely neglected their modding community with impossible to work with tools (heavily relying on 3rd party stuff) which makes the art pipeline a total and utter bitch and let's not forget the lack of support on their end with the exception of publishing some mods on Steam.
The limitations of Source are ever coming apparent through its dependence on BSP and lightmaps, it is ageing tech - even in Portal 2 they had to hack their own engine to make it look prettier and there's still only 1 env_projectedtexture ever on screen. Where if you look at CryEngine, all the lighting is on-the-fly and can be previewed 1:1 in real time, "compiling" is going to File > Save.
Not forgetting CE3, UDK and Unity are actually in the reach of indie teams as they are open about their licensing terms.
Why so much hate for Source?
Why so much hate for Source?
Because only Valve can make anything nice with it, because they've had 8 years to get used to the horrible workflow and tools.
And because CE3, Unity and UDK are much better, tech wise of course. Want dynamic lighting in source, or even the simplest of shaders such as SSAO? Well good luck editing every single shader with a second pass to allow for 32 bit depth, and then have fun hacking around the ancient rendering system.
-snip wrong thread-
Having tried both I can easily say no
they're just about the same.
Source has limitations in areas it really shouldn't, and is a bitch to publish
UDK lacks decent structure on a lot of the basic elements

I had never touched UDK before and still managed to crank something out that not only worked better than the source map, was made from scratch only using the very basic things included, had better lighting, and didn't bug the fuck out, causing me to have to rework ideas I was into. On that wasn't even on my normal machine, on my normal machine Hammer won't run without freezing every second. I'm sorry, but based on my personal experience, I would go with UDK.
