they were expecting it to be imaginary d3d

After 12 years of stalled development, leaks and rumors, the King is back with a modern spin in the long awaited continuation of the Duke Nukem series with Duke Nukem: Forever. Over the 12 years of waiting, expectations have risen to monumental levels for the game, and with fumbled development between multiple studios and potential publishers, it's a miracle that the game is finally being released worldwide, ready to play. But even with all the excitement of this release, one question remains: Is it any good? With early reports of generic modern game features and a disappointing demo released not long ago, things have been looking bad for Duke.
Duke Nukem: Forever has been a running joke in the gaming community because of how many times it has been announced and cancelled, and it's won multiple Vaporware Awards from Wired as a result. Developed by 3D Realms, the creators of Duke Nukem 3D, from 1997-2009, and Triptych Games in collaboration with Gearbox Software, creators of Borderlands, from 2009 to 2011, with the multiplayer and console versions being developed by Canadian developer Piranha Games, the development of Duke Nukem: Forever has been a very confusing subject to follow over the years. Keep in mind that the development hasn't been constant by any means, and the version of Duke Nukem: Forever that is hitting the shelves has most likely only been in development for 3 or 4 years. There have been previous attempts at making the game, but lawsuits and lack of funding have stopped those attempts dead in their tracks. With a large developer like Gearbox stepping into the mix though, lady luck let this development cycle slide, and as a result, we're now presented with a proper continuation of the Duke Nukem series.
Duke Nukem: Forever tries to dive right into modern gameplay, but is a bit awkward and uncoordinated, and ends up belly-flopping instead. The gameplay feels halfhearted and empty, and is filled with gimmicks and shooting galleries to try and make up for it. The game introduces reloading and zooming to the weapon formula, but because the zooming is just that: ZOOMING, no ironsights, it just feels lazy and bland. Zooming is nice, but in a game all about shooting, you may as well add some ironsights, because nothing is more satisfying than watching your gun kick back violently while you sling a .45ACP bullet into an alien's skull. Another change to the weapon mechanics is the fact that, despite Duke's ability to bench press over 600 pounds, he can only carry two guns. Not that you're missing out on much. The guns are all ugly and forgettable, with bad modeling and sound design to boot. As far as ammo goes, it's not much to worry about. You run from infinite ammo crate to infinite ammo crate, spam the use key and refill your ammo instantly, and you're ready to get back into the extremely slow action. The game's level of interaction is impressive to say the least, with working vending machines, cigarette dispensers, tampon dispensers and wall boobs for your slapping pleasure, it seems like everywhere you turn there's something to mess around with. The game has quite a few turret galleries which just seem to be filler for an otherwise stale game. Being that the game runs on a modified version of Unreal Engine 2.5, there are lots of physics puzzles that are quite entertaining, as well as some vehicular gameplay that drags on for so long it becomes unbearably boring, but would be otherwise fun, and an obligatory underwater level that just is not fun.
My biggest gripe with the game is the level design. The levels are linear, point A to B maps that run you through a few corridors into a loading screen over and over again. If you're a fan of Duke Nukem 3D and it's many secrets, you'll be disappointed to find that there are hardly any secrets or alternate paths. The game is filled to the brim with awkward pop culture references as well as "easter eggs" that try to make fun of other games and just end up looking stupid instead. Not to mention the fact that the game will stop you, present the easter egg right in front of you, and once you've acknowledged it you are allowed to keep on moving. I'd hate to be a Gearbox employee on easter day, they probably just hand you a bunch of eggs and say "Happy Easter, you found them all". There was one scene in particular where an idiotic Earth Defense Force marine just spat out a bunch of swear words and said something about helping his friend find his wife. Apparently this isn't immature and stupid writing, but rather an extremely comedic and satirical parody of the typical marines in video games, as well as making fun of Gears of War with the "finding his wife" excerpt. If that was supposed to be a parody, it didn't do a very good job. The levels are full of scripted sequences in which NPCs will prevent you from moving on so that the game can present you with a nugget of comedic gold, only allowing you to pass once the awkward NPC animations end and you've acknowledged how "funny" the game truly is. It's reminiscent of a little kid that drew a dinosaur picture tugging on your shirt and saying "Hey, hey! Look at what I did!". Not that the drawing is necessarily bad, but the way it's presented is so in your face and annoying that you can't really appreciate it.
The game feels like a modern adaptation of a game that reveled in the success of being old school, which never should have been made modern. It just feels halfheartedly made and poorly executed, with more focus on just making a game with Duke Nukem in it than making a Duke Nukem game. The game overall is enjoyable if you're a fan of Duke Nukem, you'll enjoy Duke's one liners and the few parts of the game that are cleverly written and designed, but if you're looking to find out what all the fuss is about over the mysterious name, look to Duke Nukem 3D. Duke Nukem: Forever is entertaining, but mediocre, and it will always be mediocre. Duke is the special spice that kicks it into high gear, so if you're not already acquainted, he may seem a bit odd to you. The game is really only enjoyable if you're already a fan, but if you're not, expect an underwhelming experience.
Sorry Duke, you've lost your touch.

Does Amazon accept returns for Pre-orders? :|
Does Amazon accept returns for Pre-orders? :|
They should. Simply request a returns number when you receive the package, and return it to Amazon.
Equip it with mods, and it'll be better.

Stopped reading when you complained about the lack of ironsights.

if you're going to bother trying to modernize a game, stopping halfway isn't the way to go
personally i think they should have stuck to the old formula, but just adding a field of view change seemed like a lazy way to go about things

The RC car driving segment was the worst part in the game. Second was the monster truck driving.
The RC car driving segment was the worst part in the game. Second was the monster truck driving.
the driving segments were well done and fun at first glance but they just dragged them on for wayyyy too long and it ended up getting crazy boring.
wish they would have kept them short because it would have been fun and add some variety, but making them so long and time consuming just turned it into a chore.
It would have helped if they were first person and had some sort of gun on them.

i think a little variety is a good thing, they just dragged it on far too long
i enjoyed the first 5 minutes of driving but after that it was just terrible
A common problem i'm hearing is that the turret or driving sections were too long/numerous. It's like they tried to pad out the game using these shifts - just a little too much.
Is Forever moddable, being on Unreal 2.5, or do we have to wait for something like an SDK?

i don't really know much about unreal modding but you should at least be able to load custom maps

Don't quit your day job.
Unless your day job is writing video game reviews, in which case, not only should you quit your day job, but you should seriously reevaluate what you're doing with your life.
Make up your mind
I think he was just trying to say that, if you're going to create the game with a certain direction in mind, whether it be classic or modern, don't half-ass it. So he wasn't necessarily saying that they should have modernized it.
I think people took this game very seriously.

a run on sentence doesn't prevent you from understanding how clear i made it that i wanted the old weapon formula, and that i only think the ironsights should have existed for the sake of following through on your modernization.
i appreciate the criticism of my bad writing and will try and improve it next time, but it still doesn't invalidate how horrible his comprehension skills are

Comparisons? He took direct quotes from you.
It's isn't just the run-on sentences. Using words such as "lots" instead of "many" or "several", that's just elementary stuff.

taking a direct quote out of context is completely meaningless
i'm sure i could take a few phrases you posted and rearrange them to make it sound like you said something you didn't
i never asked for the modernization of the game, i just said that if they're going to modernize it they should at least do it properly
Uhh no. It's still a fun as hell game and there are minor flaws, which don't even affect anything
Minor flaws? The game was pretty much released unfinished...
So, does the ending leave room for another Duke?
So, does the ending leave room for another Duke?
yes
[sp]the game ends with duke narrowly escaping the nuke at hoover dam, then there's a computer screen showing that duke is apparently KIA (dead), and then you hear duke saying "what a shitty ending, im coming back for more". then he holds a press conference and says hes running for president[/sp]

The problem with your review is that you're judging it, based on what you wanted from it, rather than what it was. You wanted Forever to be a callback to a classic FPS, but you wanted it to be a presentation to modern FPS. You wanted it to be silly, and light hearted, but it was too ugly and easy. Not serious enough, but too linear with no leaving the main path.
You reviewed it with the clear thought that it didn't meet the expectation of a game that people had been working on for 12 years, and you tried your best to make that a point, without having any real opinion of it. Does that make sense?

i reviewed it based on the premise that, judged just as a normal game, it is mediocre and not really enjoyable. but if you're a duke nukem fan, you can still enjoy it, though it won't exactly live up to your expectations. if it wasn't clear then that's on me and my bad writing, but i never wanted it to be both a callback and a modern game, the only time i ever came close embracing the modernization was the ironsights bit, and i've made it clear that i wasn't saying the game should have been modern, but if you're going to TRY making it modern, it should at least be done properly
