Stop begging for sequels and expecting them to be just as good as the classic.
I don't remember anyone BEGGING for a new Duke Nukem. DNF was like a joint that gets passed around to one person to another. In the end someone's gonna finish it.
Stop begging for sequels and expecting them to be just as good as the classic.
DNF was more like those kia cars. they get developed and dealerships in the US TRY so hard to sell them but at the end of the day nobody really cares that kias even exsist when there's other foreign cars like nissan and honda that have a reputation, that, you know, don't also just pop out of nowhere with some advertising to say "hey, we're kia and we exist, too!"
said it once and will say it again:
duke nukem 3d was revolutionary
build engine was brand new; had realistic visuals for the time, insanely original FPS gameplay stuff and was, like, the first shooter ever to feauture a badass character nowdays there's nothing revolutionary about dnf. if they made something that truly made the game stand out, like a completely destructible city or something then it would be completely boss as fuck, but alas you are given a linear shitty story, limited weapon weilding, regenerating health and corny one liners from the 90s. that doesn't save a series with an incredible fanbase to it -- that destroys it. goodbye, duke. it was fun thinking you were kind of a cool guy. too bad you turned out to be a douchebag
This had all the right elements to be a great classic at the time. It had new and exciting gameplay elements for it's time and showed quite a few new tricks and gadgets both graphically and gameplay wise. If DNF was released in that format in that time, it possibly could've been a game that would've been praised through generations like Duke Nukem 3D.
people that bought DNF are probably the same people that were tricked in to buying brink, too. it's a repeating cycle -- some of us are so hopeful for a decent title to come out because everybody keeps selling out and producing absolute garbage. the day and age of good games is pretty much done. oh well! back to photoshop; the real entertainment simulator

He even had his own comic!
and yeah. classic DNF would have been amazing if it was ever finished. i totally agree. i remember seeing that when it first came out -- was totally pumped. [editline]10th June 2011[/editline]
Ahem, doomguy was pretty badass. He even had his own comic!
do you see doom 4 coming out, though, without having revolutionizing features? doom 3 was kind of lame-o but it was also pretty ahead of its time, too. doom 4 probably won't disappoint when/if it ever sees the light of day but i doubt it's going to be a rejuvinated doom 1 with nothing new added at all
By the way was there ever a given reason why the pigcops are buff shirtless monsters now? I don't get why they're still called pigcops if they aren't really cops.
By the way was there ever a given reason why the pigcops are buff shirtless monsters now? I don't get why they're still called pigcops if they aren't really cops.
The pigcops were too original. They had to make them mainstream.
The pigcops were too original. They had to make them mainstream.
they forgot to give them ACUs and pointless helmet attachments
Forget 12 years, these last four days will literally cripple me waiting. I cannot wait.

I played it for the first time in 2007 and thought it was god damn amazing. Dukes popularity came from the interactions in the levels which was 10% and 90% of the rest because of Duke being a bad ass character. Here is what I have to say about the complaints so far. shitty linear story- Duke 3D was only not linear because of finding key cards, it wasn't actually open and besides Duke 3D barely had a story unless you actually played it from the second game. You fight your way threw aliens who have taken the Earths women and wipe out all the leaders. Which is kinda of the same in DNF. the 2 weapon system was known about FOREVER, everyone has been making a big thing about it on the demo and full game when barely anyone beside the guys on the gearbox forums complained about it, but now it's a national crises when the games released and not when it was announced. This makes no sense at all. Regenerating Health- If anything this makes it more like people horrible memory of Duke 3D where people think you just ran forward in Duke 3D and there was no reason to be careful because you never die. Even though this makes it more like running threw enemies and slaughtering them. Also this was announced since Forever and barely anyone did anything. tits, nude, corny one liners, easter eggs- All of these made Duke, and as I see it all of these are present in DNF which makes no sense when people complain about his corny jokes and shit when he says "eat shit and die" when if that's exactly Duke, it's like everyone remembers Duke as a polite gentlemen who played with a suit on and huged aliens and they all went to Disneyland together. Hidden rooms- I'm pretty sure Gearbox have said there was hidden rooms in DNF but people have said they are not any but I'm still going to say something about this. Even though the hidden rooms in Duke 3D were Duke relating (Dukes room in the first level) and cool, that never made Duke, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom had hidden rooms. That shit never made Duke, those were just basic shit you had in the games at that time. None of these gameplay mechanics made Duke, it was his character that made Duke and a bit of that interactivity, everything I have seen so far shows that all of it is present in DNF but even stepped up to the next level. Funny thing I see to is that the majority I see complaining are people who are from North America and haven't even played the god damn game yet, there is a huge difference of feeling from watching someone play and your self playing. I really think people need to open up their eyes and remember from what Duke 3D actually was, hell I have fun still in Duke 3D and that's running around the levels blowing the shit out of aliens tons of different ways while Duke makes corny and funny quotes. Those 3 things were in the demo and in the full game from what I have seen. So I'm going to have as much fun playing this as I have had with Duke 3D.
being low brow isn't an excuse for the "humor" in this game to be outright awful
being low brow isn't an excuse for the "humor" in this game to be outright awful
People seem to keep complaining about the humor when they haven't even played it. The humor is just plain and simple Duke humor, and a lot of the easter eggs are funny too.
the 2 weapon system was known about FOREVER, everyone has been making a big thing about it on the demo and full game when barely anyone beside the guys on the gearbox forums complained about it, but now it's a national crises when the games released and not when it was announced. EDIT: As a side note, this should really tell you something. That was interview and footage was from June 5th of 2008. 3D Realms died on May 6th the following year. By the looks of that footage, it would appear that a large chunk of the game had been completed by 3D Realms. All that effort was left unfinished for another year before Take-Two announced September 3rd, 2010, that they shifted over development of DNF to Gearbox Software. Along with this, former members of 3D Realms were hired at Gearbox to finish developing the game. Gearbox didn't do much work on this game, they've only polished up and added the missing levels from 3D Realms's storyboard over the last SEVEN MONTHS. Sure, they might have done the gameplay changes like the two weapon system and shit like that. But, if you guys really hate the game this much, then you would have hated it even if 3D Realms finished it because this is the EXACT SAME PRODUCT 3D Realms would have thrown at us. Don't blame Gearbox, please. Blame 3D Realms.
I'm really enjoying this game,
AHAHAAHAHAHAHA, Duke as a a badass? no, just no. he's a parody of a badass, am I the only one who sees this?
I agree. I always saw duke nukem as a parody of your generic action film where the main character goes out and saves all the poor defenceless women from the forces of evil while spouting horrible one liners. I don't think he was ever supposed to be taken as a serious character.
I think that they have tried to make the game a bit more Call of Duty styled to try and appeal to more people, but have ended up taking only the crap points of both games together.
i absolutely love the game, so many little things but... [sp]I can't fucking beat the final boss button mash thing jesus fucking christ[/sp]
The only "reference" I have heard is the one in the demo about Half-Life: "A crowbar would come in handy right about now." Firstly, its not really funny. Secondly, its not a very good reference. Just because its a crowbar doesn't mean that its a reference to Half-Life.
So why has he mentioned the crowbar in particular? It's a staple of the Half-Life series. He could've said something about a sledgehammer or something.
I like the Megadeth version better.
Game of the year. Every year.
I don't see why everyone is shocked that Duke turned out to be what it is. Everyone knew exactly what it was going to be like, and if you got this game knowing it wasn't going to be anything like Duke 3D then you might just be able to enjoy it.
Think I should cancel my Pre-order guys? I was looking forward to this, but it's lookin' bad.
I don't see why everyone is shocked that Duke turned out to be what it is. The age of that style of FPS is over. It will not be coming back anytime soon thanks to the modern military FPS overload we have right now.
Think I should cancel my Pre-order guys? I was looking forward to this, but it's lookin' bad.
Some people really like it, some people hate it. I'm honestly not sure.
Gah, I just watched the Microwave Rat and Autograph and laughed damn hard, but at the same time TotalHalibus made me skeptical. What to do what to do...
Think I should cancel my Pre-order guys? I was looking forward to this, but it's lookin' bad.
Entirely up to you.
Haha oh god.
Gah, I just watched the Microwave Rat and Autograph and laughed damn hard, but at the same time TotalHalibus made me skeptical. What to do what to do...
Totalhalibut makes good points for the goods and bads of the game, but it seems he went into it with too high expectation. He wanted true old school shooter, but that is kind of impossible in todays gamemarket. In the end i think it dosen't really do as much justice as it should for older Dukes, but it isn't failure by any standards.
