Octobrains in the original were supposed to be superend game enemies/final boss, so them being kinda overpowered is due to that.

In the employees only room, on the desk with the computer there will be a phone next to the spinney thing from inception. If you play the message it says "Tonight....You", which was from the Hand Banana episode

The sad thing is that most of the people who see the bad reviews probably think gearbox made this, and thats really a shame, because I want Borderlands 2, regardless of DNF or its impact on their reputation.

I just played through the PC version, and had a blast. Thought the whole thing was enjoyable, and now have some good perspective on what the reviewers are blasting it for, though they fucking suck at their jobs since they aren't able to articulate these things fairly, instead they just come off as whining a bunch.
It seems like a lot of complaints are directed at the puzzles, which on their own are good, I just think the pacing with them and the amount of them are screwed up. As in there isn't enough fighting to make the puzzles seem like something to change things up and slow down for a bit as it is in say, Half Life. Instead the puzzles take so long and are simple enough to just be tedious in their repetition. Honestly I liked them, but it's easy to understand how they detract from the experience for a lot of people. As well, combat, when it is happening, can be extremely repetitive due to a lack of enemy variety and the recurring pattern of: Pigcops bust down the doors/rappel through the skylight/run out of cover, you shoot them, go to next area and repeat. Some of the best parts in the game are when you get a mixing of enemies; like the alien troopers and captains, which are more interesting to fight to due jetpacking/teleporting, mixed in with pedestrian pigcops and the challenging Octobrains.
Another major source of bile appears to be the fact that the consoles got a shitty port. Snide PC elitist comments of how it's about time they got the shitty port aside, I really think this is the part that may Gearbox's fault. Triptych had finished the SP fully in '09 according to the ingame DNF development timeline, and the majority of 2010 was spent with Gearbox porting it. So really what we're seeing is the opposite of what usually happens to console games, which is them getting lazily ported to PC and the PC getting lower scores. Like on Console an 8 or 7 is a 6 or 5 on PC. PC Gamer's review of the game got it an 80, for example.
Overall I'm disappointed by the reaction, because it's a good game with flaws that ruin it for people. If this came out in '07 or '08 it would have been a GOTY contender, and it could have been a true contender this year had it got some more time with Gearbox to actually tweak the SP for the better instead of, and this is the truly sad irony, being rushed out just to have the long, turgid tale of DNF finished. :ohdear:

Lol at everyone. I bought this game expecting a fun shooter and that's what I got. Others went and bought the game expecting it to be the second coming only to be disappointed. Sucks for them.

Playing the game on hard mode with boss health bars off makes boss fights...hard.
Also, I don't get what all the whining about this being cover based is. I got about 5 hours in and I only had to use cover 2 or 3 times. Most of it was just me shooting alien heads in with a shotgun.
