Well people are giving it bad reviews because they expected it to be something completely different for some weird reason.
Even thought it's still the same Duke from Duke 3D, most of the criticism makes no sense really at all.

It's not Duke from Duke 3D, [i]THAT[/i] is why people don't like it, he's just some asshole in a long series of nothing but scripted events. People wanted a fast paced not-cover based shooter, instead we get stopped every 5-10 minutes to watch some heavily scripted event. That's honestly my biggest problem, they never tone down the scripting
Every single level had to have 2-3 events happen and couldn't just be a fun level, and those without heavy scripting were stupid gimmick levels like the inside of the machine suddenly being a super clunky platformer and the entire under water section.
Xana it's getting bad reviews because of it's awful graphics, terrible plot it forces down your neck, boring boss fights, dumb un-duke like humor and hundreds of gimmicks per level early on.
Also, off that topic, just saw Hollywood Holocaust was turned into a paintball course? What? Why do you think that was?
"I'm the Duke A number one!" The Escape from new York reference was unexpected and funny.
